Why is top illegal?? I think rod holders are about the protrusion not the height??


Hutch- 2012 Prado 150, some TJM Kit.

It's about height and protrusion. We're not supposed to have anything fitted that interferes with our line of sight over the bonnet to the road.

Now I'm no lawyer, but wouldn't adding a light bar actually then make your light setup legal MLC

3 IPF + 1 LED Lightbar = 4 lights total = 2 pairs.

The law doesn't say the pairs of lights have to each be the same light does it?

Just for the record, there are a few cops amongst our ranks (assuming ftp has been interpreted as fornicate the public -officer). We love them like their mothers do because we are part of an accepting society, hell people even tolerate me, well some do....

This is the pic Josh was referring too. I saw this ages ago, and forgot where the post was. I requested to the poster (steelbalz), at the time for some more details but unfortunately was never forthcoming... Looks like a non-winch bar, hence why he could fit the 20" mar in the slot in the from of the bar...

Problem with that Craig is that the ARB winch bar has the diagonal vertical supports, if you find a shallowand low high light bar you could cut the brackets back a bit and it should fit. You lose some more cooling though as a downside and it does not get around the illegal issue of a single light ( unless you run tape down the middle of them to make them two....)

Correct Robert. That's why I was looking at the Rigid Industries SR-Series lights in a 6" bar and place 1 either side of those Winch supports. These bars are the slimmest I have found yet at 38mm, which would fit in this space. It would then just be a matter of fashioning suitable mounting brackets to suit.
Another item on my wish list which I might add, is not a priority at the moment. Just one of those nice to haves.

Yeah that's the one. Although I didn't realise that the non winch bar didn't have the supports. I never actually measured it up but it looked like a very tight fit in front of those supports.

Its just as sensicle as why lights cant be fitted to roofs or why there is a limit on the number of lights, but not a limit on their total output, particularly in this day and age of LED light bars and HID.

Nevertheless, we should not let this thread descend into a debate about the law, rather, we should use it to help a fellow PPer continue to mod their rig.

Hi All, As we all want to install light bars and HIDS to our rigs who here is really concerned about what is legal and whats not. I dont want my rig to stick out to Mr Plod but i also have and also had a few mods that were no where near legal. I had a 10' light bar that i fitted in my winch hole to keep it tidy but found it wasnt high enough. After winning a 30' Great white light bar last easter i put that on the top off my Bull bar and yes it was a brighter light but higher the better for it. I have since come to my senses and purchased a Prado and and wanted to put it on that also.

Top of the bull bar with GME antenna mounts? NO the bonnet hits it when openning.
Turn them facing forward? NO it looks untidy.

My solution was to mount it on the roof (yes i know the law on it) but i made it follow the roof contour and its amazing how many people dont see it and how good the light is from it there. No reflection on he bonnett or window.

Its just my 2c worth but i have had it for 12months and never been pinged for it.



Double rows of leds are bigger and harder to hide but this single row puts out great light with my HIDS IPFS
