              Hi Mblocka
              Are you sure the cooper part number is WCF17, and not WCF178?
              Rare spares have the WCF17 as a Volvo petrol fuel filter??
              Cheers

                Gday simcott

                As you know!.. Why pay $oyotas price $78 - $120 for "ONE" duel fuel tank (Diesel) filter when you can buy 2 x for $33.26 delivered! .... All's you have to do is transfer the original securing bracket over from the old filter.

                This is what your after! Link below!

                oziespares = Westfil/Cooper WCF178 Is only $33.26 for 2 x free delivery ($16.63 free delivery for 1 x ).

                        How much gunk?

                        In response to..."Can anyone let me know if any gunk comes out of theirs when they change it. As I said, I had no major particle but the diesel was completely black, like someone had tipped black paint in my tank.[/QUOTE]"

                        Thanks guys ... I had not realised there was an inline underbody filter and so mine has been in there since new (2007) and 110,000K :-)
                        I've recently been having fuel delivery issues, and very noisy "pinging" and I had to take my Chip-IT off to get around it. I have now replaced the underbodyfilter and the car is a lot quieter and smoother, I guess it was causing some restriction... supprise?
                        Gunk? well I tipped out the fuel from the used filter, and it was clear, but when I blew through the filter (back blowing it and draining out the rest of the fuel) .. lots of black gunk came out.
                        I think I'll try to remember to change the filter a bit more often.
                        Also will put the Chip-IT back in and see if it works at start up when cold... even though its summer now and not really cold...

                          Sorry guys but I'm still slightly confused. I have an 08 D4D, it has the filter under the hood and also the filter between the two tanks on the under body. Now I would love to know what the actual manufacturers recommendations are for when to change both these filters. As the toyota service book is very vague on which filter is which, and the way I'm reading it really only refers to one diesel filter needing to be replaced. I'm actually more confused by everyone's comments than before I started. Ive tried reading every thread on this topic as well as asking a toyota service department in person. Toyota service told me in person that my vehicle only has one fuel filter and that its under the hood, and needs replacing every 20 000km.... so how can I trust anything they say when I know i have two filters? Now according to the threads it seems people have very mixed opinions, some say change the underbody every 20k and leave the underhood until 80k or until a light comes on, but lets face it, never trust a light. While others say the opposite and change the underhood every 20k and the underbody at longer intervals if at all...???? Then to top it off that little brochure that comes with the vehicle explaining how the D4D fuel system works etc. states that the underhood filter does NOT need changing periodically.... so I'm really at a loss here!!! I got the full service history for my Prado off toyota and at 20k and 40k the underhood was replaced with a 2339030180 genuine then at 60k the underbody was replaced with a 2330030310 genuine and finally at 80k the underhood was changed with a 2339030180, it was serviced again at 100k and they changed no fuel filter at all? I purchased the vehicle at this 100k stage, I changed the underhood with a Ryco Z699 at 130 000km and I have not changed a fuel filter since then. It is now at 200 000km and I'm going to change both now, yes I know my underbody one has been on for 140 000km and my underhood on for 70 000km, but I'm not worried, as I do long drives, minimal city k's and use good fuel. But lets face it, I've had no problems or warning lights and it runs beautifully, I cant help but think all this fuel filter crap is a money making grab for Toyota, well we all know it is, but where can we draw the line? But I would really really like to know what are the actual recommended intervals from Toyota? Because it seems not even the toyota service department follow them, and it depends entirely on the mechanic or the service manager working on the day, as to what fuel filter gets changed and when. In my opinion the best advice I've seen on these posts is to change each filter every 40 000km alternating between each one every 20 000km, and really that seems overkill to me. Thanks for reading my long winded post, and I hope someone can help me out.

                            The between tank one is definitely recommended per the schedule every 20 000km. The unberbonnet according to Toyota only gets changed when the warning light comes on. If you want to play it safe, change it regularly. It's upto you how often. Filters still block from clean fuel as diesel breaks down and you get ashfaltine forming which will sit in your filters.

                              Thanks gxl_d4d, I trust what you say, but it still bugs me a bit, I forgot to mention also about the Genuine Toyota Workshop Manual, I have a copy and it states that the replacement of the fuel filter assembly for the 1KD-FTV is the under bonnet one with the water sediment accumulator and it has no mention of the smaller underbody one at all. I find this very strange. But I guess it's like you say and filters get clogged with age and its best to replace both of them periodically. If anyone has seen this small underbody one between the tanks in the workshop manual, please can you direct me to it. I know where it is and how to replace it, I'm just interested to know if Toyota make reference to it. Thanks.

                                Ozispares are cheap for WCF178 between tank filters and cabin filters. I ordered 4 and a couple of cabin filters which arrived today. Fuel filter was around $16. Cabin filters were around $13.

                                The WCF178 comes with the mounting clamp even though the photo's don't show it.
