  • Engine mounts

Have a 2008 grande diesel. I have a steinbauer chip and beaudesert exhaust for 4 months. Only done 65 k and now my engine mounts need replacing. Does anyone know how long you should expect the mounts to last and if this mod may require stronger engine mounts, if you can get them

    Hi Rod,

I have a 2007 GXL D4D and at 77k have replaced the engine mounts.

Do some reading on the site here and it appears to be a recurring issue that is noted by many - not that Toyo would agree.

    Cheers,
    Chriso.

My 2008 model also has this issue, has been looked at by dealer and a claim approved
for their replacement under extended warranty.

I haven't looked at mine however I used to break the LHS front mount in my GQ if I hit the loud pedal too much. They were the 2 bolt version and in the end I used piece of seatbelt webbing between the two bolts. Enough slack to the let mount do its thing but not enough to let it break. Solved my problem.

I suspect my 08 is in need of replacements. Looking at the location its a wonder they are even able to get to them to swap them out. When Im stopped at the lights on a cold morning I get a shake, but popping it back to Neutral its OK. It only seems to happen on cold mornings, when temps are around 10 degrees and colder. Whats the cost to swap out the mounts?

Think I will definately stay with the 2003 slug with chip, no injector probs, no tailshaft probs, no engine mount probs, etc etc etc.
Have to agree with roo, Toyota quality has dropped badly with the last models.

A Toyota Service Manager actually told me to look out for engine mount problems, so reckon they are aware. Just add engine mounts to the list, like cracked dashboards and rattly steering columns. Prado's are good but they sure aint perfect

Is this an issue with a bad batch? I haven't had any problem with mine (just over 100,000kms) and none of the Prados that come in at work (workshop) have ever had the problem either. We have eleven D4D Prados in the fleet at my other work, and none of them have had any engine mount problems that I am aware of either.

Are there any other tell tale signs that the engine mounts have failed? Also is it quite an easy process to confirm engine mount failure? I might get toyo to check them out this week.

Had mine replaced when the car was new, under 10000 km. the dealer service manager picked it by what felt like a miss fire, saying the mounts where to blame. The mounts are actually have a chamber that is hooked up to the vacuum lines. This is to isolate vibration and noise. Now done almost 120000 and no issues. Only issue with the car is the tailshaft clunk.

Just had mine replaced by Nunawading Toyota, cars like new again, no
harsh vibration when shifting into reverse and drive. Engines idling smoothly
and can't feel the aircon compressing switching in and out.

                          cheers

Has anyone actually changed the engine mounts themselves and if so how difficult is it to do. Bridge Toyota in palmerston quoted 2 hours per side which seems well over the top. They said it was very fiddly.

I was quoted $960inc GST for 6 hours work yesterday for replacing the mounts. As my vibration is intermittent they were again unable to find the issue, although my suspicion is engine mounts and theirs is as well. My car is out of warranty but this is the 3rd time its been into Toyo to have it looked at within 3 years. They checked the injectors and thankfully came back saying they were all in spec still (90K).
Also asked whether Toyo would cover the costs of the mounts seeing as though I reported it twice in the warranty period and that they would have to put a claim into Toyo, but didnt sound too promising there.
As a FYI, my issue only seems to pop up during winter and only ever so often so I'm not overly bothered at this stage (especially I know my injectors are still good )
