I have had mine into Toyota on two occasions because of severe vibration when trying to reverse up a driveway slowly with a trailer, or even when simply moving off on just the clutch. It's not clutch shudder and is definitely coming from the engine bay. The problem is that I don't think they really know when the mounts are not functioning properly. They seem oblivious to the symptoms and the actual operation of the hydraulic aspect of the mounts. So at $104 each I thought I might buy them and install myself. I am doing the Canning next year and really want to make sure everything is ship shape.

Only issue with the car is the tailshaft clunk.
Although thinking about it, if the mounts are stuffed it may be causing the clunking in the shaft when the motor moves after stopping. Never really know but may as well replace the mounts and see if it fixes the tailshaft clunk. Will buy the mounts next pay and install and see.

Will fit them myself, can't be too hard. I have all the gear to do almost anything in the shed. Has anyone done the mounts out of warranty?

Just finished fitting a new set of mounts. Take some advise and have someone else do them.
Raise car and put on stands. Remove front wheels. Take the weight of the motor under the sump. Use a piece of wood to spread out the load.
The RHS under the turbo is difficult to get to, remove the small bolt on the side and then take out the foam pad. Remove bolts from the top of mount, remove the four bolts from the top engine mount and remove. Remove the four bolts from the bottom of the mount. Remove the two bolts from the steering rack spline, move the spline up towards the rear and lay the shaft down. Raise the motor up after the LHS is removed. Now you can remove the mount from the mount. Replace the mount in the reverse way. Be carful that the vacuum lines don't get behind the mount when bolting back up.
The LHS is the same as RHS with the exception of the steering shaft. With the engine raised up with the jack you can now remove both mounts. The RHS comes out easy through the gap left be the now removed steering shaft, however the LHS is tricky. You need to rotate the mount several different ways before it will come out. Remember how you removed this as the new one has to go back the same way.
After you have the new mounts in but no bolts tight you can start to lower the motor and settle on the mounts. Tighten all bolts and refit the vacuum lines.

If you don't have the tools and time (it took me nearly 6 hours) pay the money and send to Toyota.

I am sure the vacuum part of my engine mounts is not working properly (roughness at idle and engine shudder when trying to reverse up my driveway with insufficient revs). What I want to know is whether this impacts at all on the effectiveness of the mounts otherwise. I am about to do the Canning Stock Route and would appreciate thoughts on whether I should change them.

                Thanks

Sleeky, if you totally break the engine mounts on the CSR then give me a call 0407198129 and I will come out and take some photos before the wild dogs get you. Seriously, get it all thoroughly checked before you go. The mechanical support available north and east of Kalgoorlie, ie Wiluna to Halls Creek, etc, is almost non-existant. You'd be pushing the poo uphill even to get a recovery vehicle (flat top) out to pick you up once on the CSR. Recoveries along the Gt Central are approaching the $5000 mark and not many of these guys are prepared to venture out onto the likes of the CSR.

Thanks for the advice. I will get them changed before I go. Everything else has been checked out and changed if required. Just baulked at the price and good old Mr Toyota says there is nothing wrong with them. They said the same thing about my white smoke the day before I had an injector seal failure. So better to be safe than sorry.

Sleeky5, any updates on whether your vibration/shudder/idle issue is fixed?

I reckon I might be up for a set of engine mounts, Toyota want $107 each which surprised me as I expected them to be dearer than that. However whilst looking for some other info I stumbled upon this mob https://www.atocauto.com.au/proddeta..._30141&cat=247 who have them for $88 dollars each. I haven't looked elsewhere yet but that seems like if might be a good price and they quote them as OE so they should be the real deal.

Anyone used or know of them?

                          Cheers Andrew

Replaced mine last year. Never again. Would have to be one of the hardest jobs I have done. Even if the mounts bump a little bit they cannot fail to the point the engine falls out or causes damage. The vacuum bit must have bump stops in it and when they age a bit these bump and give a bit of vibration and noise. Not a lot. The amount of work needed to change them does not equal the effort to do the job, unless you have someone else do it.
Mine have done about 60 k and are now making the same noise as before.
Toyota replaced them at 40 k and I replaced them at 130k.

I wonder if the solid rubber 1kz mounts fit? (The blocks are related) and how much more they would allow the engine to vibrate.
