  • Engine miss at 80000kms in 3ltr Diesel

Just clocked over the 80000kms, engine appeared to be going well and were at the end of a 2 week high country trip driving down Hernes Spur track and stopped about 1/3 of the way down into Wonnangatta Valley. We stopped for photos on a flat section when traction control lights lit up and engine symbol lit as well. Engine went from 4 cylinder to what seemed to me to be 3 cylinders. Revs would not go above 1500 RPM and when I selected drive appeared to drop to 2 cylinders. Checked filters and both were clean (have 3 micron aftermarket fitted). Could not get back up to Cynthia Spur and back to our camp at Talbotville due to steepness so had to continue down into Wonnangatta. I could still drive down hill and on the flat up to 15Kph but could not climb. My mate had a V8 Workmate so we towed the vehicle into Myrtleford (about 90Ks) and called the RACV when we hit the bitumen. I had to travel on idle and the transfer case in Neutral to retain braking and steering. This was last Wednesday and currently we are still waiting the cause which they have now diagnosed as injector failure. Fuel pressure at the injector heads is around 56000psi. This vehicle has been serviced every 5000kms and the previous owner and myself (I have only owned it for 3 months) are meticulous about clean fuel but I guess we got some along the line. The RACV mechanic said they have seen several D4Ds do TBelts (the adjuster fails) at around 12000ks so are getting them to do the TBelt and adjuster seeing they have to strip the covers off. This does not seem to be a reliable engine with injectors and sludge problems etc reported on this site and I would have expected better that 80 thou from the injectors.
Makes me wish I had never sold my 80 series.

They're good with regular preventitive maintenance.
Gotta take the good with the bad. CRD's are picky with their fuel.

Ok , good news from the mechanic after 7 days of scratching his head and thinking the problem out he had come to the conclusion that the only thing left was the injectors but he was still looking for alternatives when he found a broken wire on the socket to the chip where it came from the fire wall to the number 4 injector. The wire was too short in the harness and with the engine movement broke as it entered the socket. Repaired the socket and added a couple of inches of new wire to give it flex. Fired up and after 3 minutes idle evened out and all was good.
Cost me $400 instead of $4000. You don't often get mechanics that take the time and trouble to go that extra distance. So if your in Mytleford, Vic see Abbott Valley Autos and the mechanic was James. Picked it up today and it runs great. Yeehaa

Does the mechanic have a ODB diagnostic tool, Toyota Techstream etc, it should have told him
straight away there was a problem with the injector?

Yes Leigh he did but it gave conflicting codes which didn't mean anything. This was in the aftermarket Power chip so for some reason it wouldn't pick it up.

Surely a continuity check would have found it. If it took 7 days to find then I'd be looking for another mechanic..

Edit, did he unplug the chip harness to isolate the fault?

He should have looked at the injector information, ie injector correction and fuel volumes
being delivered, these should have given a indication that something was amiss.

He should have also removed the after market chip before attempting to use the ODB
                tool.

                Cheers

Yeah, i was looking at the original thread thinking there must be fault codes in there. At the end of the day, its all good when the right result comes about!
