is there any reason why a red top wouldn't be suitable, specifically the 34R 800CCA??

No, no reason, but as the great Tim the Toolman always said, "more power!!"

        Perhaps Binford make a battery?
        Cheers

          Gday Blackvx,

I thought I would share a problem that I have since fixed which had the exact same symptoms as you - all except 1.
You said that you could jump start the car ok... this leads me to think you should start at your BATTERY and go from there.

Anyways, I had been chasing a 'slow crank' situation for around 6 months.
Symptoms were - Slow cranking, white plumes of smoke & engine misfire until the cylinders became warm.

Most commonly in the morning, the battery had no power, and would only crank slowly until the battery would go flat.
But the battery would recharge in 30 mins and was tested ok.
I swapped the batteries between my troopy and the prado.
Same problem in the prado but the troopy was OK - and it has a bigger donk at 4.2 ltrs the prados battery in it should have failed in it.
Both batteries tested ok from my local auto electrician.

I went on to disconnect everything in the prado that could have been draining power - winch etc... still a slow crank in the morning
My mind was telling me starter motor but experience tells me that when a starter motor craps out it just clicks or does nothing.
So after pulling my hair out for ages and stressing out, I bit the bullet and bought a new starter motor.

          Problem solved - not joking.

The auto eleccy stripped the starter in from of me and the armatures were burnt so badly it was simply incapable of cranking properly.
Lots of dust and dried up mud too, but the solenoid contacts were fine hence why it still engaged and wanted to crank as the contacts and plunger were good.

So anyways in my situation -burnt armatures in starter motor= slow crank = not enough heat/compression in the cylinders to create combustion = unburnt fuel = huge plumes of white smoke and cylinder misfire until all of the excess fuel was burnt away.

Now back to the 1 difference that you have, a jump start or battery change didn't do a thing for me.
If you can jump start you car Id go for the battery first and take it from there.

          Just sharing my experience mate.
          Drew

Actually Drew that exact same thing happened to my neighbour with his Pajero. He bought a new battery ect and still had the exact same issue. Had a new starter fitted and all solved. He didn't have battery tested just presumed that was it.......Cheers Steve
