  • 1KZ-TE Injection or Fuel Pump issues/replacement

    Hi all,

Anyone ever replaced their fuel pump in a 1KZ?

MUMSRIG is at Diesel Care in Tamworth at the moment and they have said that the fuel pump is knackered.

It is being replaced along with the Injectors due to fuel consumption issues.

Diesel Care say that it's a common issue in the 1KZ and that they replace them all the time.... I can't find anything on here that suggests that?

    Cheers

It's not related, but tyre shops have common issues with wheel studs breaking, Prado ones, it happens all the time......
Funny thing is I have never had a broken wheel stud in my life of working on vehicles.

Is it becase they are doing so many? Or because they are rough pigs?

No fuel pumps in 1kz either, it does happen, but not very common at all, maybe common for them as they are the diesel shop.
If the do the lot, they cover their bases.

Back to the tyre shop, after they broke one "it was only 125ft/pd on the torque wrench" yeah sure they used a torque wrench, but way too tight.
There u go, an answer with extra dribble at no extra charge 1 question = 2 answers

        Just on 190k

At 1st they were saying that it only had 30hp at the wheels on the dyno which doesn't sound right as it still pulled up the great dividing range last week at 100kph towing the Jayco, it just blew crap loads of diesel out the backside and got rediculously high fuel consumption.. Only since reinstalling the ChipIt..

Brief was to install a Steinbauer and tune it on the dyno plus give the system a once over. Now were up over $4g's and no chip install. FFS

Bugger. Hope it gets sorted out without too much hassle and $. Coming up to 160k on mine and pondering doing the injectors. I don't have a chip or anything like that though. Could that have contributed to the issues with the injectors and pump?

Well at first I thought the chip could be the source go the issues hence the reason for the change to the Steinbauer. I replaced the head not that long ago due to pre combustion chamber issues that I thought were caused by higher than normal EGT's due to the chip but from what Diesel Care found with the injectors (WAY too much preload on the internal spring and a hopeless spray pattern), it was more than likely due to them?! So new injectors have been installed which helped but has not fixed the issue, hence the pump being installed as they are saying that there is not enough fuel getting to the Injectors now.. We had the injectors serviced a few years ago but it sounds like it may not have been done right.

After reading this they may just be right! http://www.landcruiserclub.net/forum...Z-TE-fuel-pump
We were having a major lack in power, would hardly reverse up the driveway some days at the last place we were at and it hunted badly at idle especially in gear and more so whilst cold. It also cut out on a few occasions without warning and then would be a little hard to restart..
Things came better once I did the head though. Hasn't stalled since, still hunts occasionally but not as bad but it certainly blows plenty of black under load

Phoned West End Diesel Service in Sydney and they seem to confirm what Diesel Care are suggesting. Fingers crossed it's the fix!

Yep my pump was shagged at 200k. I haven't done injectors tho and its blowing shit loads of smoke out its bum when towing. I might get a set of injectors for it then. I had my pump done my tamworth too. Haven't gone up there and had the chip tuned to suit tho. How much fuel were you using mitch? I'm at high 13's low 14's now with all the fruit. Heading away with the camper for the long weekend and not looking forward to the fuel bill .

                      IMO

Common Things that cause smoke on 1kz:

                      Chips.
                      Blocked air filter.
                      Shagged injectors.
                      Fuel pump.

                      Rectification:

Loose chip. Drive & see if ok.
Replace air filter. Drive & see if ok.
Change injectors from a diesel specialist. Drive & see if ok.
Check change pump. Get a new fuel pump from Toyota just over $2000 here, ask rick_nz for a price. Change it & if your not sweet now, it wasn't a common cause.

Has chip, new genuine air filter. Pumps new and i got it for 1900. haven't done injectors too lazy. Don't blow smoke without so with chip needs more boost hahaha!

Had chip disconnected when I put the head on. All good, fuel economy of 17 to 18ltrs/100 didn't change.
                          Brand new K&N filter
Injectors were done before leaving Perth
Reinstalled chip in the quest for more power which I found but even running 15psi didn't ebate the fuel out the back. EGT's started getting up also, hence the trip to Diesel Care.
Now has new injectors and waiting to hear back from them to say the pump is fitted and everything is A OK!

Called Diesel Care today, didn't get to talk to the Foreman as he was working on a vehicle on the dyno.. The secretary did how ever say that he would call me back this afternoon (didn't happen), then she said that they were still chasing power issues!! So I'm guessing the pump didn't solve the issues.?

MUMSRIG has been there for two weeks now

Looks like we are travelling to Bathurst in my old ute with the camper in tow

Ok, things I would check, and I presume Diesel Care have checked all these before assuming the pump is cactus, was the lack of power/high fuel consumption/stalling occurring after the head replacement? Directly after? Sometime after?
Logical stuff first, camshaft timing, pump timing, check for any fault codes - crank position sensor, timing control in pump. Put a fuel vac/pressure gauge in the fuel line at the pump inlet and run under load and see if there is a large vacuum present (blocked lines, pick up in tank etc - fuel lines can break down and get a flap of rubber inside that will act like a one way valve especially at the barb on the filter). Inlet manifold pressure sensor blocked line, faulty sensor, check inlet boost pressure with another gauge under load, (low pressure can indicate fuel supply problem) stuck egr valve, turbo waste gate stuck or maladjusted, blocked exhaust system - check back pressure under load. Does it have a standard exhaust or aftermarket?

Keep you going for a while.

                              Good luck.
