The 1KD-FTV, has 176K KM's - just had a service with the Toyota Dealer (I bought it used), I did ask them about blowing white smoke on some startups - written on the invoice was the suggestion in the FUTURE that injectors or EGR should be checked out.

Anyways, guess what? One hell of a rattling noise - but no loss of power, and fuel economy was still OK. Sounds like a petrol engine with a spark plug removed...

Took it to a non-dealer Toyota specialist - one of the guys pulled the dipstick with it running - and the poor girl promptly sprayed oil out of the dip.

I'm holding on to some vain hope that it is something simple. I should also point out that there doesn't appear to be oil in the cooliant.
That's not good news I'm afraid. Mine developed a ticking/rattle with no loss of power etc.
pulled motor apart to find no1 cylinder scored from the piston. This was due to a blocked oil pick up screen. All relates back to an injector seat failing and allowing blowby to occur.
I cannot believe that TOYOTA do not accept this is a common fault and a manufacturing defect.
Bottom line is sounds like a new short motor.
Hope I am wrong but give me a PM if you need any info as I have just been through this exercise.

    • Come on guys, you've read the threads. It's not common at all for these types of problems with the D4D. Only a handful have failed. (Yeah, right).

                • Hi
Can anyone tell me why new pipes are required when new injectors are fitted?
                  Are they really necessary?
                  Thanks

                  • Injector pipes carry HUGE pressure on common rail systems ( from 15,000psi upwards under load )
They are specified as a replacement item (ie non re-useable) once disturbed
These pipes MUST be tightened to a set torque to ensure unions (joins) do not fail upon INSTALL

I have seen injectors done without fitting new pipes without an issue, but have also seen a failure of a union with massive fuel leakage a few 100 km after install

Honestly for the cost - why risk it?

Do a job once and do it right !

                    • Oooooh!

I will flare-up some back-lash for sure! Lol

I am either a genius (highly un-likely) or shear lucky... (Don't think so!) Lol

I have personally R&R my high pressure fuel lines "FIVE TIMES" and still no leaks with 160,000km and climbing!

Why have you removed your fuel lines so many times you may ask?

#1: To fit blanking plate for EGR (Total idiot!.. What was i thinking?).

#2: To remove again to drill hole and try again? (Obviously a slow learner?) Lol

#3: Penny dropped and removed the plate completely!.. I had enlightenment!! Lol

#4: To remove intake manifold to clean it properly and did a compression test whilst easy access to the glow plugs.

#5: To fit new fuel injectors and replace the seating washers of course!

                      Cheers

PS. the word "peace of mined" always reminds me of someone rubbing there hands together with a smile and saying Money, money, money! Lol

Also! It is still possible (With knowledge and experiance) to still do the job properly without spending the earth!

                      • Toyota here sent out a bulletin when these 1KD's were new saying replace everytime the come apart

This was updated to pipe MUST be replaced if injectors disturbed (ie removed) as the seating face angle changes
and OK to reuse if injectors disturbed - which is the bulk of the 1KD issues lol

                        • So Rick what's the go with the deal? For $1700 AUD you will send the whole pack including the pipes and are these the new DLC injectors?

                          Comment

                          • The injectors are new from Toyota NZ - and the kit comes with washers, pipes, and DLC injectors
All you need to do is have them fitted and have the new compenstaion codes entered into the ECU

The cost is $2050 NZ which at todays exchange rate is $1701.50 AUD -
International courier rates vary depending on how fast you want the items
                            1-3 days is $75 NZ
                            3-6 days is $45 NZ

I will dispatch the same day as I receive payment and send through a tracking number

I am unsure as to your Customs and border controls for taxes (GST and duty) which may be payable at your end

for those of you who want to know who I am and what i do ...... search the web for Rick Wheeler Subaru NZ also check out www.bristols.co.nz

Send me a personal message - I will need your chassis # for correct kits to be sent and arrange payment and shipping method

Looking forward to helping some of you in Aussie stuck with 1KD issues by a very non helpful Toyo AU

                            Regards Rick

                              • Hi again, I have just been reading with great interest the thread on "how many fuel filters"? started back in 2007, as I am trying to get info on my above question. There seems to be great conflict regarding which filter is the main one which needs to be changed every 20,000 kms.(The one under the bonnet or the one between the tanks?) My mechanic, as we speak is sussing it out whilst on the hoist but i would like some feed back from all you knowledgable people out there if possible. Thanks Dave
