Glad its been resolved for you and you're on your way again - they are scary dollars - $20000. I'm kinda glad I forked out for an extended factory Toyota warranty (not a dealer warranty). I hope this thread doesn't get longer as the years go on!

Did we ever determine what build date the new injectors started to get fitted? On the "rattle" thread a date of pre-March 08 is mentioned - has that been confirmed in any way? Is there any way to check?

Glad you got it sorted out mate, thank goodness you were not in a remote area, Toyota need to do a lot of soul searching with respect to this defect and customer relations.

It is disappointing that the two fuel filters in the Prado fail to handle slightly dodgy fuel. If the fuel was very poor, the engine wouldn't run at all. If there is water contaminating the fuel, why doesn't the water sedimenter alarm operate?

There could be a large number of early D4D owners who will be faced with enormous repair costs and inconvenience when the vehicles are no longer under warranty.

Unfortunately there is no mention of Toyota doing a recall.

A contributing factor in view is the poor standard of services by some Toyota dealers. These modern engines are temperamental and require everything to be in tip top order to run properly. As we know, some dealers cut costs by not doing services properly. Because the book is stamped, when something goes wrong, it’s easy for them to blame poor fuel etc. The fact is that when corporations are under pressure to grow returns year on year, it’s those unseen areas that get compromised. Just remember, you don’t need to take a new car to the dealer to maintain the warranty. Find yourself a good mechanic and dare I say it – honest and you may just avoid these issues.

            grey nomad,
good to hear that toyota fixed your prado.
be it toyota nissan mitshubishi bmw ao whatever i do not beleive
the new common rail diesel engines are strong as the old direct injection
disel engines. Small four cylinder prducing al this power defenitely has
some effect on longetivity. the old diesel engines had a compression of 21:1
(the old 3.0 engine) as withe the old toyota and nissan 4.2 diesel engines.
the new engines have a compression of 17:1 which means they do not have to
be built as strong. If i was to by a ddisel i rather buy the prado with the old 3.0
            or 4.2 landcruiser turbo....

Both of your comments are what was running through my mind when I decided to ditch the D4D.
However, now that it is running well and I have virtually reset the odometer to zero, the economics say to have faith and stick to what I have.
Maybe Denso's new injectors and Toyota's new ECU reprogramming have eliminated the injector problems. Time will tell.
However, if I stumble on a well loved late model 100 Series 4.2TD that has all of the aftermarket goodies installed but never used and the changeover price was right, wild horses wouldn't hold me back.
A diesel mechanic once told me that the old Nissan 4.2TD with a 3" exhaust and a chip was the best ever engine.

Wow! And I believed these sort of failures only ever happen 1-week after the warranty period expiers .

The end result is great. The toughest part is deciding to keep it or not. My 2c... so far this is an isolated case and there are a *lot* of troublefree D4Ds on the road.

A little off-topic, but I believe this is standard with any warranty. Ultimately, when the customer pays, they are also paying for a warranty. When a part is replaced under warranty, that is being paid for by the supplier with no extension to the warranty.

I'm glad Toyota got you sorted out, and so they should. It would have been interesting if it had happened a day or a week out of warranty... would they have still come to the party and helped you out :?:

I still think the "Australian fuel" story is a load of crap to mislead customers. There are so many common rail diesel vehicles (cars, 4wds and trucks) out there now that if fuel was such an issue it's made out to be then streets would be filled with vehicles with blown up engines in plague numbers.

Toyota has to own up to the fact that their first round of injectors were/are of an inferior quality, do a recall and sort this out for their customers.

If you read some of the overseas automotive forums you'll find this is an issue with Toyota D4D's all over the world. Not just in the Prado either. It may be a small number in percentage terms that are having problems, but it's not doing Toyotas reputation any good at all. Shades of the patrol 3lt engine problems, only a very small percentage of number of sold vehicles had issues but the brand still continues to struggle to recover from its stained reputation.

Exactly the reason I bought a 1KZ-TE engine model.

Yep, for $9k you get a brand spankers engine from Toyota

A little off-topic, but I believe this is standard with any warranty
Yes this is true; parts/repairs under warranty are only legally required to be covered to the end of the original warranty period no matter what make or model you drive. Interestingly, in SA at least, the time your vehicle is off the road is supposed to be added to the end of the warranty period (i.e.; the 17 days they had your Prado should be added to your end of warranty date) I bet this doesn't happen often!!!???

the new engines have a compression of 17:1 which means they do not have to
                    be built as strong
Don't agree with that, the newer engines run much more boost, up to twice as much. The reason for the higher compression in the earlier engines is to improve off boost drivability. The nature of the new variable vane turbos means this is not so much of an issue.

Hell. Mine is a Sept 07 build and I'm almost certain I'd have got the first run injectors. I almost wonder if it's worth finding a no BS diesel mechanic and just swapping the injectors out anyway. Any time I query the issue with Toyota they simply say there is no issue. I note they have now begun adding an "injector cleaner" to my fuel tank at each service, and recommend an "injector service" at 40,000 km. Hmmmm, this wasn't the case previously (that I knew of) and makes you wonder. I had to laugh when I read that you got into the service Dept on a Saturday. I Don't know any Toyota service departments that are open in Perth on a Saturday, at all. Even the new car sales, come midday, it doesn't matter if you walk in with a sack full of gold bars..... Dealer closed and that's it!

Completely agree that Toyota need to admit the fault and issue a recall.

                          Hi Fungi2003 & IRON-PAWW

Fungi2003, you asked "Any tell tale signs you might have got before the engine died on you?"
My answer is not really. In retrospect, I did feel that my fuel economy was down a little but when towing a caravan with head/tail/side winds it is all over the place anyway. The thing just went BANG! with clouds of smoke.

IRON-PAWW, you mentioned that your dealer recommends an "injector service" at 40,000 km. The service manager from Sci-Fleet Toyota has stated to me that these injectors are a "non serviceable item". Additionally, they apparently cannot be removed and reinserted without using new pipework as they are a "one off crush" to seal at 20,000psi. Also when replacing the injectors, you need Toyota's special computer to tell the engine ECU the exact serial number of each injector as they are so finely calibrated that their individual characteristics are encoded into their individual serial numbers. With these engines, you can't touch the injectors let alone pull them out and mix them up.

Lastly, I did hear that some dealers are bypassing Toyota and buying the new injectors directly from Denso. The savings are considerable but what about Toyota warranty? Who knows?

                          Cheers - John

I have and 07 D4D SR5 4WD Hilux dual cab ute, it has a shocking rattle when cold and I have been back to Toyota 5 times so far. I have had it looked at 4 times and the computer flashed on the last visit, whilst this has fixed some of the problem, I have number 4 injector that rattles its head of. Toyota claims that for the injectors to be in range, they operate at 3.0, mine on number 4 ranges from 2.7 upwards! To say the least I am a liitle disapointed with the outcome so far. I also have an 05 SR 4WD Hilux ute with steel tipping body fitted snorkel, lift, bar, spotties, uhf, straight through exhaust and it bloody flies.....it had the injectors replaced at 40,000 km's and with 90,000km's showing on the clock it is running sweet as.

With all the stories floating around about the V8 with its engine failures, what would you buy next time.....................

Last time they had it overnight and managed to get some data off to Toyota for their assessment. Mentioned the noise and data when dropped off, but when I picked it up they forgot to mention the results to me! Asked the kid behind the counter about it again and he went to see his "boss". He said and I quote "We have had a meeting about this with Toyota and they have said they are no longer investigating this issue as there is no damage being done to the motor by this. As there is no damage occuring, there is no issue."  I asked about what would happen in another 60k and reared it's ugly head big time. You know out of warranty and all? Was told that it's on record so all's good!!!! Really..........

On a side note they did mention that have finally found that BOTH my engine mounts need replacing "as this will fix the issue of the vibration in the motor when stoppped at traffic light first thing in the mornings"

                                Grey Nomad,

Your account of your D4D motor is the first time I've heard of a Prado motor burning a hole through a piston.

Glad to hear that you were taken care of by Toyota. I shudder to think what your options would have been if you were out of warranty.

Your comment re every new turbo diesel now on the market being direct injection and Euro4 compliant does ring an accord with what I'm thinking about modern diesel technology. We've seen Nissan Patrol ZD30 failures and there are lots of cases out there. Hopefully your motor was the exception rather than the rule.

I am thinking you may have a faulty injector perhaps caused by some dodgy fuel. I feel safe to categorise this as a "one off" as there are lots of members on this forum who have got many many more kilometers under their belt compared to your vehicle.
