Are the cold values, read with ignition on and engine not started, or engine started and read straight away?
I presume hot are read at normal running temperature.
Why the difference in injector values generally from cold to hot engine as a matter of interest?

    • Hi Guys,

Just a quick word here on how the feedback system works on the ECU. Basically, the 'learning' part really only happens at idle, thereafter, all the correction (individual cylinder to cylinder that is, overall is different) is still based on the original Injector Code.

so, the way the ECU adjusts the injectors is to look at the 'acceleration' profile of each cylinder on its crank angle sensor (720 pulses for a complete cycle = 1 pulse per degree). therefore, at idle, the ECU can easily see if some cylinders are more or less effective, and then changes the fuels to suit...

Whilst its very much largely true that the fuel is going to have the greatest impact on this 'effectiveness', other factors will make the ECU correct the fuel correction values and therefore 'appear' as a bung injector. Biggest one we've encountered so far is a cylinder that's low on compression, but have also had the same where 3+4 are more effected by Carbon build up in the intake and so on...

Anyway, just wanted to state, that whilst these injector correction values are a great indication of an potential issue, they are not the be-all and end-all, or by any means an absolute, (we've even played around with new ones and got +/-0.8 readings before) but they are a great indication.

Also, we start noticing 'evident' problems from around +/-1.5, and from 2.0 and above it gets really ordinary and decent fuel savings are likely. The ECU has the potential to correct upto 5.0 and we've seen enough to know that it does from time to time! but i'll leave that to the Hilux forum

A catch can is definitely a good idea on any vehicles fitted with the 1KD-FTV engines.

        • Latest victim is my 2007 D4D owned since new- 204,000km

Well, it's like an old saying about pilots and landing without putting down the landing gear. There are those who have and those who are yet too.

I don't think any of the D4D engines made in 2007 during the period of suspect injectors will escape eventual engine failure.

Mine suffered the good old hole in the piston failure.

It wasn't fun. I was on a freeway in peak hour traffic and suddenly lost power and thought I was going to die as the car just slowed and slowed.

Engine kept running but it was like a turbo failure. The car needed hish rev's to keep moving but in lower gears.

I limped into Melbourne City Toyota (where I've been asking for years about the injectors and always got told "they are within tolerance").

Lets see if I'm within tolerance next week when it's time to discuss Toyota fixing it for free.

Really, it's probably better value for me to insist on a new motor going by some of the stories on here. By the time the cost of cylinders and injectors comes into play plus labour costs it's probably cheaper for Toyota to just drop in a new motor.

If they want to play hard ball I'm going to take them straight to court and trial by media on the way. It's been a great car until now.

          • Sorry to hear about the motor. With mine, the insurer made the repairer (Toyota) quote on rebuilding the original motor - new sleeves, pistons, etc. It worked out nearly double the price of a new short motor.

Hi guys/Roo, I recently bought an 08' D4D Prado with 155k on it. I managed to get the previous owner to replace the injectors (hinterland Toyota did the work), after the last service noticed a knock. I am paranoid as hell after reading these 160 odd pages, do you have any hints or tips to avoid having the injector issue again or worse have a blown engine? I use BP fuel from the same servo and just had the
160k service done at Auto Leaders Robina with no issues reported. Appreciate any suggestions.

                • North Roo isn't around at the moment. There is another thread about ongoing preventative maintenance which you should read. There also have been issues with engine mounts that cause a knock. Again a search will find the thread and how to check for it.

                    • I'm curious about the oil pump filter getting clogged supposedly due to diesel contamination caused by leaking seals.

I know the Holden Jackeroo had a similar problem with seal failure, but with it the sump eventually filled up with diesel and destroyed the engine. Checking the engine oil didn't really reveal anything apart from the oil being diluted and a smell of diesel.

My question is why the sludge, I would have thought that diesel being a light oil would simply dilute the sump oil as happened in the Jackeroo and gradually fill the sump?

I also spoke to my local 4X4 service centre, a very well respected company in Melbourne and they indicated they have never come across this issue with any of the Toyota's they service, and they service a lot! They said they would talk to their Toyota representative about it.

They wondered weather it my be lack of maintenance, ie not changing engine oil that is causing that issue rather than seal failure?

                      • Leigh, I don't believe it is diesel contamination but rather carbonised (burnt) oil caused by high temp gases leaking past the injector seal into the top end of the engine. I hope I have explained this correctly other members feel free to elaborate and/or correct my very basic explanation.

I think that pretty much sums up my understanding of it.

Probably makes sense though again I would have thought carbon that fine
would mix with the oil and be filter out by the oil filter similar to burnt carbon
                            blowby for the compression rings?
