  • Frederick,
I had my injectors replaced after a battle with Toyota.
During my investigaions I found that the original injectors were known as "Non DLC" and the new ones as "DLC'
The DLC stands for "Diamond Like Coating" I think.
Apparently the original Non DLC injectors were not the appropriate injectors for the D4D.
I would be checking with Toyota as to which injectors are fitted to your vehicle, seeing you are going on a trip around oz.

    • Steve the copper washer is sad but I assume that Toyota have changed the washer along the way and there are late 120 and recent 150s with injector issues. Alledgedly (just get that in for the sake of pc). What month 08 is your 120? There are 4 different injector part numbers and essentially 3 as the late 120 and 150 injectors are mechanically the same. I am thinking there are a few problems and not just one. The only injector I have seen pictures of was an early one and the nozzle was definately worn which meant the fuel wasn't being atomised enough and thus the combustion wasn't even and (uncontrolled) detonation was occuring. These injectors are quite complex with lots of moving parts susceptible to less than perfect conditions. Having said that there are still first edition injectors that are out there working away.
      Hi again Pedro,

Mine is a February 2008. The injectors had been replaced before I bought it at 24k kms. This was evident by the injector codes which showed up using a new Carman scanner when coding up the new injector. Also, two rocker cover/injector seals had been split, and bodgied up with silicone.

The nozzle on the injector that failed was still in good nick (Photos attached) although it has been cleaned up. It was caked in carbon when removed.

As said before, we debated this issue to death over a few beers. I think that Toyota knows of the seats failing, but no one wants to talk about it. If you are correct, in that the part # for the seats has not changed.... well I think we can all draw a logical conclusion as to why that might be.

Since my most recent posts here, I have received correspondence from 3 people who have experienced similar issues. One poor woman, who PP'd me from here, experienced a total engine failure, after the white smoke symptom was ignored.

The white smoke and rattles seem to go hand in hand in many cases, but not all cases, from my reading.

Anyway, mine is now powering along like new after relatively little work, and I now feel a lot happier with the vehicle, in that the issues of injectors which have worried me in the past are no longer veiled in dark and mysterious secrets.
The fuel system on these vehicles isn't that complex at all, and despite what some here will tell you, is not that difficult to work on, given the right info and appropriate equipment.

The test that Toyota did was in the workshop idling from cold, which sounds fine on my engine. Is this consistent with what others have experienced?
Steve, mine does this as well, I don't believe it is an issue and is quite normal for the D4D engine until it has warmed up. My understanding is that the dreaded rattle is heard at idle when first started.

          • Steve the part number etched on the side of that injector doesn't line up with any shown on toyodiy and my local toyo parts place confirmed that those were the correct part numbers for Oz. Very interesting. Are there any other part numbers on that or other injectors?

Michael, There is a 31 character alpha numeric code on the top electrical connector on each injector. This is the code used to program each individual injector to the computer.

              • My mate just pulled up outside in his one year old 3 litre t/dsl Pathfinder. Rattle? sounds like a 30 year old combine harvester. Makes the Prado sound like a Rolls.

                • Hi guys,
I thought I would add what I have experienced here.
I have a Sept 07 build 120 and have just clocked over 103k kms. I have experienced the death rattle only for a period of 3weeks very early on with only 40k kms on the clock. It was after filling up with Woolworths/Caltex fuel and only lasted for that tank of fuel.

Since then I have only ever put in BP fuel and at least every 2nd tank I put though a diesel conditioner/injector cleaner (Morey's or Chemtech). It has been 2 winters since then with no return of the death rattle.

Like it has been mentioned before, if the numbers were collected on who has had the rattle and compared to the total number of vehicles sold, it is still a small percentage that are experiencing the problem.

As with any internet forum you generally hear more about the bad experiences and little about the good.

I see you push the BP line all the time Roo, I experience a rattle occasionally usually after idling for a while such as at traffic lights, it only lasts a few seconds after you take off. I guess the real interesting point is that I only ever experience this when running BP diesel, never noticed it with other brands of fuel. From a seat of the pants point of view I find Shell to give me the smoothest running, unfortunately we dont have a local shell agent anymore.

                    Cheers Andrew

                    • Hi Guys,

From my experience, make sure you've got your engine oil level right as low levels will increase the rattle dramatically.
                      Cheers,

                      • Densom Injector Rattle in Pre-2008 D4D

                        Hi All,

After reading up on the common problems experienced with pre-2008 D4D Densom injectors on this site, I was confident in identifying and reporting the significant cold start rattle over severall service intervals since buying the car with 100,00kms. At 150K the engine light finally came on after Toyota had reflashed the CPU. The injector diagnoistic came back with that all the injectors were "out of specification".

I was surprised that such a diagnostic had not been performed when I first reported the problem and I then requested an "out of warranty claim". I also wrote a supporting letter to Toyota Australia as a loyal customer explaing this appeared to be a common design fault. Despite having over 150kms on the clock, Toyota kindly offered to 50% of the costs for labour and parts to replace all 4 injectors and lines with the post 2008 ones. Total cost would have been $3600 so at $1800 I think got a great deal considering I am well out of warranty. %100 percent would have been better. Anyway - Big thanks to Toyota for comming through.

The really great news is that the new injectors have made a massive difference. The engine runs very smothly and the cold enginge rattle has dissapeared completely, even in below zero temperatures.

The moral of the story is, that forums like these can help everyone identify inherrent design faults and if you can demostrate goodwill as a customer than you can have them adressed by the manufacturer.

Thanks to everyone on PradoPoint. Good luck if anyone else out there makes a claim.

ANSWER: So "TOYOTA" want me to suck-up to them when they are "OBLIGATED" to Honor warranty of a faulty part x 4???.... I am not that good at being "diplomatic" whilst being flanked with the blatantly obvious! "WHILST STILL IN WARRANTY"

I have had my car from brand new and alerted Toyota of my concerns @ 20k! I then had a further "FOUR" cold start checks whilst "STILL" in warranty???

I hardly call a cold start check after leaving it overnight then the test not carried out till 12.47pm, Ambient @ 22c, Fuel @ 23c, coolant @ 42c & run-time @ 241sec????...... I think that would be enough time to change cold start fuel pressures and volumes don't you think?..... Considering that the Air,Fuel and coolant are supposed to be of equal and run-time approx 15seconds and done first thing in the morning before the day heats-up!...... i consider myself duped!!

Not sure what made your case so different from mine given that you bought your Prado @ 100K then had an appraisal @ 150K???? (Several services which Equals approx 2 x 10k services & 5 x 5k services!).
Do you work for Toyota in Sydney?
..... Fact is Toyota was "VERY' aware of my concerns and they flanked me like a lot of others on here "AND" what are the odds of all my cold start data being deleted from the computer huh?

Do these last 112 pages (1,124 reply's mean nothing??).... HELLO!!

                            Cheers

PS, I think Toyota are now in a big hole! Its called slipping down the popularity ladder to global ranking third!... And they earned it!

I think I may have made the mistake of assessing smoke colour on what I could see in mirrors/reversing camera, and in fact it was oil smoke.
