Well finally they have come to the party. After the third time leaving it in overnight for them to do the cold start thing, the head mechanic took it for a drive. 20 meters down the road he said," definately a problem with your injectors. " So its now booked in to have all the injectors replaced at a cost to toyota $4000 ( parts only). No wonder they put up a fight. Up until now I have been dealing with the counter staff and over the year with this problem, they keep pushing me off. Well the look on there face when the head mechanic told them to book me in for a complete replacement of the injectors , was in some way worth the wait.

      Hi PeteS,

Have Toyota established root cause to your death shudder issue? I've been keeping a watch of this thread over time as I own one of the first 120 series D-4D Prado's imported into Australia.

Do you have any advice for preventative maintenance that should be performed to avoid this? I am tempted to go visit the local Denso dealer to check all fuel components (pump, filters, injectors, manifold and even a visual inspection of the cylinders).

Is it just me, but trading in the V6 on another one seems like a better option until the D4D gets replaced!!!! reading some scary stories. I know it is a small minority of D4D's, but you don't hear of many issues with the V6.

Apparently it only affects D4D engines with the old spec injectors, however he did say not all old spec injectors play upl. The head mechanic informed me that Toyota started to install the new spec injectors from early 08 onwards. Another interesting note I found out, is that you can only do 1 ECU reflash. It seems that my services department ( maybe to keep me thinking they were doing something about it) told me on each service they do a reflash ,and then tell me to come back in 1000k.

Interesting. I spoke to a reputable Denso/Bosch workshop earlier on today about getting my fuel/injector system inspected as I have just reached the 150,000km mark (I have a November 2006 build D-4D). After a fairly lengthy discussion the gentleman I was talking to never heard of the issue (deather shudder) discussed in this forum. I would have thought that these guys would have known about this?

Another thing he noted that was gunk in the manifold is apparently normal due to the re-circulation/re-burning process common in any CRD engines. He agreed that it was good preventative maintenance to take off the manifold and clean the gunk out.

Been almost 4 weeks since Toyota agreed to replace the injectors - still waiting on parts apparently! Keep this in mind when going through this process. Apparently they also need to replace all fuel lines and seals and the fuel pump.

One major issue is high fuel consumption.

I haven't heard of the pump requiring a change out before.

I've had intermittent cold start shudders this winter in my D4D (Aug 2007) model. Its a very rough idle that comes when stopped at the lights, I have been able to constently reproduce the issue in reverse for some reason, but only in drive about 50% of the time. Knocking the shifter into neutral stops the shudder immediately.
Does this sound like the engine mount issue or the Injector issue?

I live in Sydney and are keen to visit a Toyota dealership that has experienced this issue before - can anyone recommend one?

Sounds more like an engine mount issue more than anything else. Wouldn't hurt getting the injectors checked as well.

I just moved up to Sydney and can't recommend a dealer (yet). I still get my car serviced in Canberra.

Well after a months wait for parts I finally got the injectors replaced today. Just picked up the car and will park it outside for the night to test it in the morning.

Should I expect it to be quieter instantly or have to put a few kms on the new injectors first?

                      Fingers crossed.

(Also - Fuel pump was NOT replaced, they got it wrong the other day when I was told otherwise).

It should be quieter instantly, if they have set it up correctly.......just as it would be expected to be with a new vehicle from the factory.

Well it seems to be finally done. Drop it off on Monday and picked it up today. So far no black smoke out the back and no rattle. Will wait till morning for the final verdict. Overall just took 30k's to convince them.

Took my 2008 D4D in for it's 36 month service, 9850km's on the clock. For the service record I mentioned
it has always had a miss on one cylinder for a few seconds on cold starting since new (has never worried me)
and that of late has developed a harshness when dropped into drive or reverse after a cold start but which
goes away after a few minutes running or doesn't happen if you let the motor warm up for a couple of
                              minutes after a cold start.

Techs initial finding was all injectors tested within spec. Found engine management system was running old
firmware, so he flashed ecu. Would have preferred they hadn't but seems they upgrade now as a matter
of course when they find ecu has not been upgraded to the new firmware to address the injector noise
issue, which mine did not have anyway. Maybe it's costing Toyota to much to change the injectors so they have
decided to upgrade firmware in all D4D's to prevent noisy injectors in the warranty period?

Now have to wait to see if it has fixed both issues and if not then book into dealer for a cold start test.

                              Cheers

                                Howdy all,
So after reading all these post regarding the rattle, it came to my attention i should follow up the noisy issue that my truck has.
So Rang Peter Davey Toyota and was informed that a software upgrade was available, not wanting to sound smart, i asked "what if" this did'nt shut it up, i was then told a fuel sample will be taken and injector values recorded, but it was toyota corp decision.
Well on collection yesterday (5pm) the car had been sitting since 10am there was still a distinctive noise. I was informed and it was documented that all injectors were within range , but there was a noticable fuel knock, and was acceptable.

So after reading all 48 pages twice,i notice some of you have changed oils, and added additives, although not recommended, my questions are what oil, and what additive are you using, and have you noticed any difference.

                                Thanks in advance.

P/s: also had a new starter fitted (under Warranty).
