Whitey1 - I thought I had found the cheapest quote of $3200. We were even booked in but my missus decided to try a few more places and that's when she found Fremantle Fuel Injectors. I think it was cheaper because they keep the old injectors and recondition them so they make a few dollars there.
Toyota in Mandurah quoted me $1500 each for new ones. Don't know why a dealer in Darwin would charge much more. Maybe there's less competition up there and they can get away with it.

    • Once again, something stinks when Toyota quote numerous different prices for injectors. In my case, I don't know the actual cost yet, but the service manager reckons he found a cheaper price just to keep the insurance company happy with the fact that they have to supply 4 injectors and not just the 2 that have died. I'll not be surprised if I am asked to contribute to the cost, but what I am sure of is I will demand answers to the following: where are the damaged bits so I can photograph them and what really caused the problem.

If Toyota has known about this issue since late 2008 and the problem has been affecting Prados from 2007 and continued right through 2009 with the first of the 150 series, then why should I pay to have something fixed that should have been fixed back then (mine is Dec 2008 build). Logically then the insurance company should also have been aware that these problems existed before I bought my car in 2009 so taking my money for the extended warranty infers that they should pay to fix it all up - with or without a contribution from Toyota. Also, who will reimburse me for: one week's lost holiday, fuel for the 1200km recovery from Mt Augustus back to Kalgoorlie, one busted windshield, 2 broken headlight covers, 2 broken fog lights, 3 weeks without my car.

No sorry, I meant Bridge Toyota in Darwin quoted me almost $2000 to replace 1 injector, that is supply and fit, not just the injector.
The $3500 quote was from a diesel injection place.

        • "I'll ring you tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon with an update" says the service manager. Not surprising, I'm still waiting for the call.

          • Injectors are here but now they need a fuel pipe and there doesn't seem to be any of those around. When they locate a pipe they can screw it all back together and then do a compression test. Oh, by the way, the injector seal issue is another myth apparently. The good news is that I shouldn't have to pay a cent.

That's good to hear. So they can re-use those old unplated seals with the replacement injectors then?

              • Somone better tell Toyota over in NZ that they are wasting there time changing them every 45k then & oh yeah, tell Toyota over in Europe that the recall isn't actually required......

                • Just been in for more bad news. Number 1 cylinder is way down on compression and mechanic suspects hole in top of piston. He explained that this could well be from a jet of fuel being pushed through the top of the piston by the injector following over compensating for the failed injectors. But, get this, they wanted my permission to go ahead and pull the motor out. The insurer will pay all the costs of removing, repairing and replacing the engine if they find a broken or failed component but, if they don't find any failed parts, then I will have to pay for the removal and replacement. WTF? Well, we all know that they are going to find junked parts. I suggested sticking a camera down the injector hole and having a look at the top of the piston but what would I know. If the cylinder bore is damaged then they'll have to get a new short block from Japan.

                  • #1 and #2 are generally the culprits of the injector seals leaking. If there is a risk that you are to foot the bill in any way, try and insist that you are present when they pull the injectors. I wouldn't mind betting that #1 is stuck and or covered in carbon gunk from a failed copper seat/seal. I can almost feel your pain.

                      • They've already ripped the injectors out and got the 4 replacements. I haven't seen the damage and they don't really want to talk about the failures.

                        • i could have kept my old 98 V6 Prado and spent the money on a GTP Falcon or something similar instead of buying this car.

                          • I must admit reading this thread leaves me freaking out about my 09 120 D4D having this issue at some random point. When I bought it 3 months ago the I quizzed the dealer and they said "that issue with injectors was sorted on the 09 model"

I'm betting that was sales talk but at the time gave him a chance.

To date no issues but it does miff me seeing all these problems everyone else has had that Toyota have their head in the sands. Far removed from the credibility I thought they had as a builder of high quality cars and supporting them. Stinks of the Prius problems where it's not worth fixing unless they really have to.

                            Bit underwhelming really.

                              • When you spend a lot of time driving around this big country like I do, both with work and in my own time, it really concerns me that no matter how much servicing the car receives from Toyota or other dealer or approved workshop or how much extra work and in between oil and filter changes done at home, nothing will reassure me that the car won't crap itself way out bush again. My confidence is shattered. I do go to some remote places by myself on occaisions but now I will have to have another car tag along or at the least have a bloody good recovery plan in place instead of relying on the Toyota reliability that I have done for the last 20 years or so. What rights do I have when it comes to viewing the damaged bits, taking photos, etc when the car is in the Toyota workshop?
