What rights do I have when it comes to viewing the damaged bits, taking photos, etc when the car is in the Toyota workshop?

If I was in your shoes I would just tell them this is the way it is going to be. When you strip it down I will be present with a camera. If they give you OH&S crap tell them you will wear your steelcap boots.

You put it very well roo. We feel let down by someone we trusted.
I'm still waiting to hear if Toyota is going to fix my injectors or not. Been waiting 2 weeks now.
Otherwise its off to the local injection place. Can't really afford to replace all four, so hoping one will do.

Yeah I thought it'd be better to replace all four. We just don't have that sort of money in our back pockets. We're going to have to go into debt to pay for it if Toyota doesn't help us.
And on that note I just found out that Bridge Toyota sent the wrong info to TA! More delays!
Got onto Toyota consumer services about it cause it's actually been four weeks since they tested it. Surely we should know by now. They said they'll look into it.
Just hope its not doing any damage driving it in the meantime.
Oh and if all four should be replaced, why did Bridge Toyota only quote us to replace one? Grrr

Be careful that you don't blow a piston like mine has through faulty injectors. That's one theory that over-fuelling has punched a hole through the top of the piston.

Dave, based on the fact that at least two others on this forum have had damaged (cracked) pistons caused by faulty injectors I would say that there is a VERY high likelyhood that the injectors are the culprit.

My March 2010 build 150 is tapping away much louder this winter when the engine is cold under light load (not idle) until it warms up so I will definately be having the injectors tested on cold start as suggested by Roo.

This is really a pain in the butt having to constantly worry about the motor and the lack of understanding/recognition by Toyota Australia and most of the dealers does not help either.

And I wonder where all those nasty bits of piston have gone? Bearings, oil pickup, turbo?

Finally an answer from Toyota. Its not the one I wanted (no we wont help you) but now we can move on.
Time to book it in somewhere else to get it fixed.
If we were at home I'd have a crack at it myself, but its a bit hard to work on your car in a caravan park.

Engine is out of the car and I had a look yesterday. The injectors are reasonably clean and there is no sign of seal failure. They had yet to tear it all down. Today I get a call from the dealer and they start rattling off all these replacement parts and the cost, including nearly $7000 for a new block. I said not to bother me with the cost of the parts because I'm not paying anything. Good news is a new block is available from Perth. I guess the insurer will ask me for a contribution as the vehicle will now be in a better condition than before the failure, ie new engine with zero kilometres on it. I reckon Toyota should pick up any difference.

Hey 'Roo, should I get them to replace the timing belt while the motor is getting rebuilt, it's done 73700 clicks.

You would be crazy not to replace the timing belt and I would replace the water pump too.

I agree. You've more than paid your contribution by being left stranded and without the vehicle for weeks.

I think its kind of irrelevant than the engine will be virtually new, from the insurer's perspective. The way I see it is, you have it insured for this kind of mechanical failure and they are paying Toyota to fix the issue. How Toyota goes about repairing it shouldn't have any bearing on it.

The water pump is already on the parts listed for replacement. There won't be too many original bits left by the sound of it. A lady here in Leinster (WA) had the same engine failure and no extended warranty - ouch.

I've taken the risk and decided not to extend my waranty ($2k) whats the cost out of interest if shit hits the fan?

The cost to just get the injectors replaced is about $3300 for us in Darwin. Getting it fixed while we go to Bali
