  • 150k Timing belt change

    G'Day everyone,

I have a 2009 3L D4D GXL Prado. I have had it since 90,000. I have changed oil and filters every 5000km myself. I have also changed the inline and main diesel filters at about 120,000.

I need to change my timing belt soon. Like now actually. I'm at 150,256 kms. I am getting a mate that knows a few things about cars, but I just wanted to get some information that actually own these types of cars and have experience doing this so I appreicate your comments.

    1. Is timing belt easy to change at home?
    2. Do I need any special tools etc?
    3. I have heard something about changing the pulley at the same time. Is this a good idea to do at the same time?
    4. What is a rough cost for the timing belt and the pulley?
    5. Is there anything else that should be completed at the same time as the timing belt?

What else should be completed at this 150k service. The car has only had oil and filters changed as well as diesel filters changed since 90,000km. What would be the most important things that need attention for a prado that hasn't been serviced except for the oil and filters as said above?

Thanks for your answers and suggestions guys and girls. I really appreciate it.

I'd get the injector feedbacks done, from all reports 150k is about all you can expect out of them.

If interested i can print out the procedure from my timing belt book at work if you want.

The following answers are different as i'm a mechanic.

          1. Very Easy
          2. No
          3. I would change Hydraulic Tensioner, Tensioner Pulley and Timing Seals. However getting into the timing seals is a little harder.
          4. Can't remember price of Kit sorry.
          5. Water Pump. Often they are leaking by this stage if not a touch earlier. However changing the pump at home will make the job harder. Alternator and mounting bracket have to be moved to the side.

Hello, thanks for the quotes. Really appreciate it. Is it advisable to change out water pump even if it's no leaking? What are the repco kits like as in quality?

IMO If it ain't broke don't fix it.
Change pump at 300k if it makes it.
If it leaks, it's a low leak usually nothing urgent or that will stop you or do damage.

I have had problems with Repco branded items including water pumps.
Stick to Japan made stuff & bearings.
I often use bursons brand, GMB pumps made in Japan.
I try not to use genuine as they leak, all Toyota water pumps leak, eventually & slowly.

Timing belt is a timing belt, that's it.
Check tensioner & idler but only need to replace if faulty, which if it was you would already know by a broken engine.
Again perhaps change those extra 2 items at 300k.

The only things that need to be changed more than the Toyota service schedule, that will prevent are:
                          Fuel filters
                          Injectors.

It ll depends on the condition & service level of the vehicle but that is your guide.

Hello, was that wondering how do I get rid of the timing belt reminder light on the dash, once I change the belt?
