  • Engine vibration - 120 series

I have just had my 2004 T/D serviced at 20000K so thought I would share my history with anyone who wants to read it - purchased my prado 12 months ago at Coffs Harbour and had it serviced there for the 5k and 10k services. At the 10k service I complained about vibration - pins and needles type vibration - which was coming mainly thru the steering wheel and mostly felt when the engine was between 1500 and 2000 RPM. The service manager acknowledged what they termed as a "slight drone" coming from the motor and advised me that Toyota was looking into the matter and that there might be a general recall sometime in the future. At the 15k service - done by Lismore dealers - I again complained about the vibration but was informed by them that there was no detectable problem and that any vibration was normal for this vehicle. Today I had the 20k service done - again by Lismore dealers - again I complained - and to my astonishment I was advised that - yep - it was definitely there - that they had contacted Toyota Tech Dept and been advised there is a problem they are experiencing with the T/D and that mine has to be assessed to confirm it is in line with what they are experiencing. If so it is to be fitted with a 90 megahertz dampener (whateverthehellthatis) which will absord the vibration.
Since I originally complained about this problem I have written direct to Totota but received no reply. Also visted internet chat sites but no one else seems to have a similar problem - thought it was just me - even my missus thought I was bonkers.
Now I feel vindicated - anyone else out there with a similar story.

    engine vibe

Hi there Lisa god im so glad im not the only one with the streeing wheel vibe its the same 1500 to 2000 rpm light load and its a pain in the rear end mine is the V6 so this tells us they all do it some worse than others . I was going to put the truck through our own workshop / R&D dpt and sort the fault out ourselves. But why the hell should we need to fix issues at our cost when we have this book that lives in the glove box that has warranty all over it. I have lernt that you must keep on and on at the dealer dont go to another dealer just keep on pushing do not give up demand service and you will get it. But it may take time i bet there are others out there with the same fault and i bet you that Toyota fobed them off saying its normal. If you think there is somthing wrong with your truck there normaly is good luck and dont give up regards Skycat
    I hope i havent got a lemon, now 4 1/2 years on i know i have.

Well thats interesting. I have noticed a vibration but not throught the wheel.
I notice it the the gear sticks. Man T/D.
At 70Ks in top the little 4x4 stick vibrates with a real anoying rattle in it.
I have just settled and just run in 4th at that speed.
At 70 in 5th the engine is just ticking over and it probly is labouring a little.
70 in 4th is probly better for it anyway. Ill check at what revs it does it on my way home today.

      Jeff.

Ok. I checked the revs against the speed and 70Ks in 5th = 1700rpm.
        70Ks in 4th =2000 rpm.
1700rpm vibrates the stick, 2000rpm is smooth.
Thats right in your vibration zone.

I supose its just those big thumping diesel slugs of alloy doing their thing.
wouldn't have it any other way.
        Jeff.

I would like to report that my little stick does not make a vibrating noise any more.
(I am now wondering how many funny comments you guys can come up with about that sentence)
I used to just leave the UHF mic dangling around the gear lever and in the boot the levers poke through. And since I have finally mounted the mic hook there has been no vibrating noises from the little 4X4/ low range lever.
It still vibrates at 1700 rpm but no noise.

              over.

                Engine vibration

OK now here is an update to my problem as outlined early July. Sorry I have not responded to any replies as I left here on 3/7/06 for a caravan trip round thru central Qld up to the Gulf then across to Darwin via Cape Crawford then down to Port Augusta Broken Hill Mildura Deniliquin (ute muster has to be visited to be believed) then up through Burke to Moree then Coffs Harbour then home. Prado went well with no problems. Only thing is the 5000k between services which is a pain and costly. Towed my 18ft coromal van about about 2000kg with fuel consumption varying from 13.8L/100k to 23.4L/100k - wind behind makes all the difference. Generally avaraged round 17L/100k. Had my car serviced in Mount Isa - no evidence of any viabration according to the dealer and again at Alice Springs. I covered 16000ks and had my 25000 service done here in Lismore when I got back. They again acknowledge the vibration and tell me they are arranging for a 90megahertz dampener which they have to order to be fitted but they don't think it will cure the problem so I will just have to wait and see.
                Will keep you posted regards

Just ticked over the 100,000 k in my 3lt TD 2003.
Little stick vibrates (always has) at low revs and learnt early on, not to hang anything off it or it will annoy the crap out of you.
Car has towed 2400kg van for 45,000k's and still going like the day I bought it.

Thanks for your response - my problem is not with the "little stick" but it is a vibration which can be felt thru the steering wheel - it gives me a pins and needles type feeling. The little stick vibrates like hell but I have been told by various dealers that this is normal - it does not cause me amy problems at all whereas the steering wheel one does.
Asise from this I have had no trouble at all - would love to have a bigger engine tho - mine is the 3L turbo diesel auto. If they bring out a new one I will look seriously at trading. Regards

There must be a problem with you vehicle, as mine is the 3ltr TD and NO vibration through steering wheel whatsoever.
If the "new" Prado diesel uses the same motor as the Hi-Lux, you can check the figures on the Toyota site.
Torque = 343 NM on the "new " one, and 343 NM on the current TD Prado.
Max. Power =96Kw on current motor and 126 Kw on "new" motor.
^^^^^^^ means at full throttle, full revs, where you don't drive.
The torque is what you use every time you drive and is still the same as current motor.

The thing that would be a great benefit would be the 5 speed auto, if used.
Would be heaps more drivable when towing as it would stay in the torque range much more easily.

Mind you, my old bus holds it's own wherever I have been and not been outrun by anyting , so far.

Trust me, the new motor is going to change the prado a lot.

                        Quote:
Toyota has unveiled a powerful new 3.0-litre Turbo-diesel engine for Prado, providing substantially more power and torque.

The new common-rail direct-injection four-cylinder engine lifts maximum power more than 32 per cent to 127kW and peak torque almost 20 per cent to 410Nm.

Prado's new Turbo-diesel engine develops 127kW of power at 3400rpm and 410Nm of torque from 1600rpm all the way to 2800rpm.

I have driven the new hilux with the same motor as the new prado (D4D) (Less extra torque as above)and also drive a 3 litre TD reguarly (2 months old).
                        The difference is amazing !

We towed 2 rally cars on identical trailers the other day, and the hilux had all the spares in the ute tray, plus 5 guys in it, and still ate the prado with no spares and 2 people in it!

Its a big difference in power and driveability.

Different tuning to the Hi-Lux D4D. 410Nm will be a great improvement in towing, good now, great with the D4D.

Good news re the torque, just a pity that Toyota couldn't advertise it themselves, even if only on their internet site.
May even help losing sales to other makes thru lack of info..

I got that info from the Toyota site and a Toyota press release.

I reckon I am even gonna go drive one, as I was so impressed with the extra power the hilux engine has over the standard TD prado, imagine a tuned up version *Skids!*

I must be at the wrong Toyota site, as it still says 96kw and 343Nm.

Opened all the specification PDF docs etc and all the same info.

Do you have the URL to the new specs please ?
