  • Easy Idle Up Control - 1KZ-TE

    Hi all
I have been keen to set up a idle up switch or hand throttle for my rig mainly for my endless air compressor. On this model prado there is a spare unused input on the engine ECU for a idle up. I presume it is fitted on the overseas models. Basically you need to purchase a pigtail connector from Toyota, insert it into the connector on the ECU, run a single wire to a momentary switch and then to earth.
It will when pressed raise the idle speed to 1200-1300rpm regardless of engine temp (unlike the 1KD-FTV D4D), and only lower the revs back to normal when you start to move more than a couple of km/h. Another press of the switch returns the idle to normal.
    See attached pics

Sorry this one is not that clear.. PM me if you need a legible copy

I priced a idle up switch that is fitted in the D4D's but was around $110 trade and was nil stock in Aus, so I used a MOM switch I had in my stock that was originally from RS components for probably $20-30. If anyone wants the part no of that one PM me.
The pigtail was $26.50 trade and had to come from Japan. Just a note on inserting the pigtail, on the reverse side of the connector (opposite to the release catch) is a lock tab which needs to be carefully pried out to insert the connector on the pigtail and snapped back into place. Break that and you will have all sorts of dramas. You break it - I ain't liable!!
    Any questions feel free 8)

    Regards

    Adrian

    Nice work Adrian.

I noticed that pin on the ECU wiring diagram when I was installing my intercooler fan controller.

How are you going with a hand throttle? This will be my next project after correcting the speedo.

      Mick
I've basically given up on the hand throttle as this is all I needed for my compressor. I believe Brian and Ian are soldiering on with that one. I'm happy to share any info if you need

          worked at treat.

If you want a really cheap idle up, bend a welding rod so it sits under the corner of the dash and presses the accelerator pedal. Move the rod to vary the revs. Cost - approx $1. Time to make - 30 seconds. Leave in the drivers door pocket. Best advantage is you can take to the next car. Been using it for years when heating water for the shower (Glind).

FYI i did this mod some time ago and there was a wire present in the plug so no pig tail was required, mine is a 2004 TD 1KZ auto, sorry but i have forgotten the colour of the wire.

Was it just a single wire leading to nothing? If so does this mean all you did was install a switch?

Re: Easy Idle Up Control - 1KZ-TE

The wire was part of the wiring loom so if you are keen to follow it to where it terminates then you can plug into it, I just stripped the insulation off at the ECU plug and soldered a wire onto the existing one thats there then ran it to my switch.

Does anyone else need a momentary IDLE UP switch? I have contacted the manufacturer to get one designed up but there is a minimum order quantity. The design is ready to go. Cost is $20 ea compared to genuine Toyota which is ~$100.

Did you end up getting the switches?
