  • What engine oil do you use in your 08 Turbo Diesel Prado?

    Hey Guys,
Was just wondering what engine oils members are using in their D4D engines?

    Mineral based
    Semi-synthetic
    Fully-synthetic

    15w-40
    10w-40
    5w-40

Are you able to use a fully-synthetic engine oil in the D4D engines and if so, would 5w-40 be too lean?

    Cheers

I've used all of the following in addition to what the dealer puts in at service. Never had a consumption problem with either of these. Havn't noticed any fuel economy change with these either.

    Castrol Edge 5w30 Full Synthetic

    Havoline Fully Synthetic 5w40

    Delo400 15w40
2019 GXL, Bullbar, UHF, Redarc Brake Controller, Tow Bar, Secondary Fuel Filter

Thanks for getting back to us gxl_d4d and cheers for the info. I am considering using Shell Helix Ultra Fully Synthetic 5w40.

I also used Castrol Edge 5W30 synthetic when the Prado was new thinking only the best would do (as recommended on the Castrol website) but it's expensive. The Toyota dealer is see every 10K uses Caltex Delo 400 15W40 so I now get 20 L drums for the 5K services which I do myself. Any oil (spec CF or later) is better than what comes out after 5K (never mind 10K!).

          Buzz,
          I put 5w-40 Castrol ( fully Synthetic)in a 2009 Prado (new) .
Run the mineral oil (recomended to get heat into the internal running gear) for 1000km then change straight over.
Have done 24000 km with some 1000 k round trips and had no probs, no oil light etc
I had a prob with local tojo dealer telling me it was for petrol and not deso, and wouldnt put it in even though it had done 10,000 ks on it. After a "discussion" they rang Castrol & "put it in".
It runs out like water, not the gunky thick mineral that you see at 5000ks when warm
Real happy with it and it saves me changing mineral oil every 5000ks, as with the two previous tojos
          Hope this helps
I am considering going sythetic in auto trans as well

The fluid in the gearbox (toyota type WS) is fully synthetic from what I could find out. It'll probably be a waste of money to drain it and replace it. There aren't a lot of manufactures that sell Type WS in retail.

You might be better off having it replaced every 80 000km by Toyota.

I have used Catsrol Edge 5w30 (as recommended in the handbook) - I try to stock up when it's on special at SCA, and can usually pick it up for $30-$40/5 litres. Toyota knock $30 off my service costs because I provide my own oil so in the end I only end up paying an additional $10-$15 for each oil change (every 10,000)

                Valvoline Super Diesel 15w 40.

Are you guys sure you are using the correct oil for your conditions?
5 weight oil seems way too thin for hot climates.

Currently using Castrol Edge 5w-40 Fully Synthetic.

No problems after almost 4,000 kms run in mostly stop and go Manila traffic. Prior to this, I've been using Chevron Delo Multigrade 15w-40 without any problems as well. Fuel consumption was the same with both oils. Just noticed that the fully synthetic oil still felt lighter even after 4,000 kms, unlike mineral which felt sluggish even after just half of that.

Re: What engine oil do you use in your 08 Turbo Diesel Prado?

My d4d seems to run quieter when hot and cold with 5w as compared to 15w.

Once my two drums of 5w40 run out, I'll change over to delo 400. That'll be around the 100 000km mark. I don't recon the extra $50/20L drum is worth it given I'll be changing the oil every 5000km.

What about moisture that you might have with having such a big drum and the elnght you keep it. It would get some moisture from the air around everytime you open? Think it would be better to buy factory sealed to minizse the amount of moisture?

I wouldn't worry, mineral oil isn't hygroscopic. Any moisture that may be present will quickly be evaporated off through the PCV system.

Personally I use 15w40 Valvoline diesel extra. I can't see the benefit of using synthetic oils when you are changing it at 5000km intervals. Synthetic will turn to sludge just as quickly as a good quality mineral with the soot load.

Re: What engine oil do you use in your 08 Turbo Diesel Prado?

Had an oil query floating in my mind. Hope you can enlighten me.

I've tried different oils on it thru the years (i.e. Toyota diesel 15w-40; Toyota synth 5w-40; Petron Trekker 15w-40; Delo Gold Multigrade 15w-40, and the latest, Castrol Edge 5w-40), and nothing has been rejected, nor has performed that exceptionally. Yes, I've put the gas-intended synthetics in it, but that was because they met the CF requirement.

But what really is the 'better' oil?

                          - I would think that synthetic oil specifically for diesel (with a rating of CH or higher) would be best. But what comes next?
                          1) Is it the synthetic oil for gasoline (usually with 5w-40 viscosity) that meets the CF requirement of the Prado's engine?
                          2) Or is it the semi-synthetic oil for diesel (with 15w-40 viscosity) that has a CH or higher requirement?

I don't intend to prolong the oil change intervals past 5,000 kms.

Re: What engine oil do you use in your 08 Turbo Diesel Prado?

This is not meant to sound condescending in any way so please dont take it that way.

If you are doing 5000k oil then why not just put in the oil that the manufacturers engineers recommend. The company engineers designed the engine and did all the testing and as a result are in the best position to recommend the appropriate oil for it.

I worked as a diesel mechanic with a large country council and the workshop policy was to service all vehicles, from stationary plant and vehicles to D11Cat Dozers, exactly as per the manufacturers specs.

We never, ever, had a diesel engine fail unless operator error or an external factor was involved (cooling system failure, oil line failure etc).

We never, ever, had to rebuild a diesel engine due to wear.

So I say save your money on all the flash stuff and service as per Mr Tojo's book. You will save money and at worst ensure it lasts as long as the Toyo engineers designed, which for a Tojo is a damned long time. You just wont get that warm feeling you get when you spend more spreading some love to your ride. Better off buying your female (or male) friend some flowers or chocolates. That will result in measurable gains in doors that your mechanical love wont repay outdoors.

in the handbook for the 150 diesel it mentions that 5w-30 is preferred.
In the old Jackaroo I ran Penrite HPR 5w-40 oil, certainly revved easier, used a tad less fuel and felt more responsive.

The 1KD-FTV doesn`t seem to rev as freely, relies more on torque, so don`t expect much change in engine response when going to a thinner oil, fuel economy may improve slightly. The HPR is not suitable for vehicles with diesel particle filter.
I don`t believe there is a particle filter in the Prado.

I like running thinner oils, why should the engine waste hp pushing thicker and heavier oil around? Lighter oil builds oil pressure quicker and being w 40 oil also means it handles high temps better than w-30.
stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,
but had a 2012 and 2010 150 Prado GXL auto diesel in Graphite with Bridgestone D697 A/T. Dobinson C59-300/325 and Bilsteins. Accessories : two baby seats.
