    The clearances are:
    COLD
    Intake 0.020 - 0.030 (0.008 - 0.012 inch )
    Exhaust 0.025 - 0.035 (0.010 - 0.014 inch )

      Re: 1KZ-TE Valve clearances

Thanks, I will have a crack when I get home.

Sounds like most dealers are pretty confident they dont change but it is good to be sure.

        One decimal place out....
        Try

        Exhaust 0.25mm-0.35mm

As you can see from the info I sent you it's quite a fiddly process (due to the bucket and shim set up) to check them all.

It takes around 2-3 hours and in general they will be within spec (I helped a guy change his head last year and at 180k his were still well inside spec)

I think this is why they are checked by just listening to them... how many customers would pay an extra $200 or so on top of their service just for a "Check"

              Re: 1KZ-TE Valve clearances

No probs, I have done lots of cruisers and lux's some time ago, no prados but they are the same setup.
Im pretty sure they will be ok and I wont need any shims, but I will check them for peace of mind.

I have been a mechanic/fitter for some time and I know I couldnt "hear" if a diesel had loose clearances (unless they were looser than a 60 year old hooker) let alone tight ones!
Its just the w*%k service managers tell people instead of getting caught out when the say they have done them when they aint! I guess they know from experience that 90% of the time they are ok.

Most of a service is checks, and they quote to do a 80thou service, but dont do something the manufacturer says needs to be done during a 80thou service!
I bet if mine was for some reason to drop a valve after I check the clearances(not that it would), Im sure they would pull the "you didnt get a toyota trained tech to do the 80thou service so its your fault and no warranty for you" routine, even though it wouldnt get done at a dealer anyway!

Thanks again for the info guys and I will let you know when I do them if they were loose, tight or right!

                Re: 1KZ-TE Valve clearances

As previously discussed they tend not to wear but it does pay to check them

A loose or excessive valve clearance will be able to be heard by an audible tickng noise coming from the valve train. This should be fixed as soon as possible as something has obviously worn considerably to cause that and if left much longer without attention could cause a large failure of the engine.

A tight valve clearance on the other hand can not be heard without experience. It all comes down to working on vehicles/machines with this problem. Usually caused by valve recession into the cylinder head. More noticeable will be the lack of power of the engine.

                Hope this helps

A loose or tight valve clearance, that can be heard or noticed by the way a engine runs has been a problem for some time and is the result of neglect.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it was neglect though. I work for a Caterpillar dealership here in Darwin and over the last 18months we have been seeing numerous c15/c16 powered trucks come in for periodic maintenance and we have found that inlet valve clearences have closed up considerably. This is not a fault of the operator nor owner but a defect in manufacture. It wont necessarily take a long time for something like this to develop. If wearing begins, the process can be accelerated rapidly. It just takes a good operator/owner to pick the sound up and recognise that something is not right.

                    Just my 2cents worth

                      Re: 1KZ-TE Valve clearances

Valve clearances rarely need adjustment onthe 1KZ-TE . It's a low reving engine and as a result valve recession is low , the other components can wear and this is more common in this engine hence the "stethoscope" method . Most rebuilders I know recon most don't need adj. during a normal engine life .
It not hard to check your self ,the engine must be cold , just done mine for the 80k service (every 40 K) . Will post a how to do with pics if you would like ?

I wouldn't mind if you could post the pic's I was thinking about either doing mine or getting a price for it to be done ops: . My fuel economy is a tad too high for my liking (16ltr's per 100ks) thats city driving and I have a Dtronics chip which makes it blow a bit of smoke ( but more power which probably is why the economy is shot to pieces) I emailed safari with my concerns re the black smoke and they said it could be dirty injectors ????. I have disconnected the chip and will see what the fuel economy is like without it.

I have pictures of under the cover in a 95series here

All pretty simple to check once the intercooler and rocker cover are off.

I'll post a "how to do it" with pics , away working at the moment do it over the weekend . Easier if you have a deep 10mm socket for the glow plug removal but other than that all you need is a replacement cover gasket and intercooler shim gasket if your fussy ,though most of the time they're ok .
If you are not used to 'guestimation" tensioning of small diameter fasteners a suitable low torque tension wrench would be useful .
