1KZ-TE Valve clearances

Hi everyone. My engine is up to 140k, the valve clearances were not done at the 120 or 130 service, I forget which. Anyway heading up north for an 8000k trip in June. I dropped into the dealer to get a price on a service, valve clearances and a timing belt while it's all apart.

Concerning the valve clearances, "We just listen to them" he says, if it sounds alright we just leave it. I ask about shims wearing and valve recession, and the service manager says they don't wear, if it's not noisy then don't worry about it.

I asked if I could have that in writing, with a smirk, he smirks back and says no.

So what do you reckon, any mechanics have an opinion if he is right or not?

We just listen what sort of techican is that, way better then me i have to remove rocker cover and check clearances with a set of feeler guages,he must be really good :roll: .
It's called preventative maintenance, very rare these days to want to spend money on your vehicle and someone is talking you out of it.
Try someone esle i reckon.

Blokeman which area you going, i'm going to cape leveque in july for 4 weeks to get my fishing fix for the year. I can taste the big mackies already :lol: .

Marg's, up to Perth, up to Meekatharra and Newman, Out to Karijini and surrounds, back roads to the coast, up to Derby, Gibb River Rd, stick our heads over the border, down to Wolf Creek and the bungles, back to Broome for a rest, down to Coral Bay, back to Margs. About 8500kms.
We only have 1 month, so it will ba camp move camp move...........

Plus valves tend to tighten up with wear - not get loose/noisy. Listening to them is worthless.....

I have one dealer 50kms away, who I won't use as they tried to rip me off on a purchase, this other dealer is 100kms away.

I wonder if it is because it's a big job, not one for the first year apprentice? My warranty runs out in 10k, or when I get back from my trip. I might get the local mechanic to do it then, at least he knows what he's doing.

I will also get him to check every little thing, so I can make a warranty claim before 150,000. (Extracare warranty)

Well getting the 140k service done before I head up North, so I tried another dealer, as I was unhappy with the first guys refusal to do what I thought was an important maintenance item. Also booked it in for Fan, A/c and timing belt change, and valve clearances again....

Same deal, we just listen to them etc etc... The service manager says he has never done Prado valve clearances, so it seems my worries about valve recession are all in my head. It is a lot easier to nod and have faith that the nice man knows what he is talking about

Valve clearances

I have just posted this listing to Toyota and and awaiting a reply, will be interesting to see if a reply is forthcoming.
Tried to get information previously re the brake booster "recall" , but was fobbed of and told to go see a dealer.
My vehicle was one of the faulty ones and I didn't receive a recall notice..

Good news, all done. The dealer (I won't say which :wink: ) 50kms north of where I live did the clearances and all the work, no problems at all. Got a full report for the file and all is well.

Incidentally they did a brake master cylinder recall job. I mentioned that the other dealer had told me that it had been done at a previous service, he gave a funny look and said "Mmmm, he didn't do a very good job!" :lol: :lol:

Needless to say I won't be visiting the 'other' one again, thanks for all the input everyone. FWIW my clearances were all within spec at 141,500 kms.

I'm off on Saturday, I'll post a report when we get back in July on how the Prado held up.

They most likely dont check them i made the same sought of enquires thru a friend who used
to work for dealership in sydney same answer just listen besides they most likely dont have a shim kits ?
I think the valve clearences are in the owners handbook.
