I saw something on the 120's cool site on yahoo about that.. there is also a pic in the picture section relating to how to do it.

      Clark Rubber

      Hiya,

I couldn't find a filter at either Supa Cheap or Autobarn. So I popped into Clark Rubber with the frame and they cut a piece of aircon foam for a wallet busting $2.70!

      Works a treat!

sgeffen, nothing non-standard with my aircon.. it's always been that cool but it can take a little to get down to the coldest, has to be on re-cycle and on the second speed or above...

Yes that's mine. I'd be curious to hear how anyone got on who've tried it. Thanks Pradogxlv6.

It's a trial and error job but works ok, it was 37 yesterday and pretty comfy in the car. Still not quite what I would consider "perfect" though, but pretty good, and heaps better than it was.

I'm quite happy with the aircon in my 120. I feel the heat too. Once the car is cool I always use recirc - makes a huge difference.

As far as that mod is concerned - it looks a bit hit and miss to me. I seem to remember when I was fiddling endlessly with Subarus someone had come up with an electrical mod that used a pot (variable resistor) in the line so it was tweakable. Wouldn't be all that hard to work out - all you would need to know is the range of resistance presented to the circuit by the varistor and work out an appropriate series value for a pot to allow you to tweak it within that range without taking it too far off scale.

You'd need to be careful though - I don't reckon a stuffed airbox would pass warranty if it was modded in such a manner. The compressor does cycle on and off for a reason, I guess the question is does it do as good a job as it could.

              Drew.

That's probably true, I had to fix it myself as Toyota had given up. The problem seems to be with some dealer fitted aircons in the poverty pack models, the ones installed in Japan are pretty good apparently. It's hit and miss as well, some owners have no problems.

looks like fun, but i'm already getting 7.7 degrees so all that work for an extra degree is not so appealing!

I'd trade 10 degrees for some rear vents!!!!

what was yours before the mod?

Don't know exactly. Blowing warm then cool (not cold), 1 hour drive at 32 degrees the car was unpleasant, stuffy and not cold. Compressor cycled all the time, not just when the evaporator was close to freezing on low fan settings. You could feel the air blow cool then warm.

Hi Blokeman an a/c that blows cold then warm has a fault i reckon the thermostat temp sensor on the evaporator should sense temp change faster allowing for better control of the compressor engagment. Just a thought .

Pick up new prado up on wednesday can't wait off line power from what i can remeber is very good it has three stage intake runners and varible turbo, max torque comes in at 1600rpm (LC100 max torque at 1400rpm,430nm) with max torque being only 20nm less then LC100, the figures alone sold the car for me.
                              Cheers Phil.

After getting pee'd off with dust entering the cabin I finally got around to fitting a cabin air filter (thanks also to Raydes who approached an aircon techie to cut up some filter foam).

Open the glovebox and locate the little spring loaded cord on the right hand side. Grab the plastic clip and slide it towards you - it comes off fairly easily. If you undo the little cable loop from the plastic clip it can be a right bastard to put back on - at least the plastic clip gives my 5 thumbs something to hang onto.

There is also a plastic lug on each side of the glovebox that stop it from opening fully. You will need to press in on the right hand side of the glovebox to disengage this lug. Then do the left hand side. It's quite flexible - and designed to be able to resist breakage by Toyota mechanics (so it should be even stonger than their diffs.) :?

Once it's undone lower the glovebox - as though opening it - it should drop all the way down and, maybe even, drop off the finger clips at the bottom.

That's the little sucker - behind there. Grasp the clips on each side and pull towards you. It comes out fairly easy.

... and there you go - standard assembly - no filter.

Bung the piece of pre-cut foam in place and slide the frame back into it's holder.

To re-assemble: Engage the finger clips at the bottom of the glovebox - make sure they engage fully - if your re-assembled glovebox doesn't quite sit right it will be because these clips are not engaged fully.

Squeeze in on the left side of the glovebox to engage that side's lug - then do the right.

Grab your little retractor clip and slide it back onto it's mounting point.

                                Close the glovebox.

It's a nice easy job. Took me all of 5 minutes - because I had to stop to take photos.

                                Cheers
                                Chippy
