Here's a link to the 3M web site here in Australia if you want to try and source a filter through them.

    http://www.3m.com (Link size - edited by pradogxlv6)

or try this US site where you can order online

    http://www.filtretecarfilter.com/

Looks like we can only order the larger sheets here is Australia though and then cut them to fit following the instructions from the prado120 site.

      Chippy,
I was considering doing the same but after talking to the service dept they claim it will make very little difference as it is on the recycle side of the air conditioning.
(so what is it meant to filter?? The air that is already in the vehicle???).
They also made comment on not being as efficient,(something to do with the fan not being good enough)so that is why the filter is left out.
It was pointed out that it was only with the units that are fitted here prior to delivery. Not the VX or Grande

All of this was after the service dept kepted the vehicle for four days to carry out warranty repairs to the air conditioning unit (Not getting cold enough)
They fitted a new thermostat control unit & is all OK now.

"BELIEVE IT OR NOT" As I am still not convinced as to their comments.
At least you can keeps us informed as to any improvement or not!

You are doing such a good job describing your repairs & mods you should produce a pictorial workshop manual

        Thanks Fazza

It's more a "How to play with my new mechano set" manual - symptoms of a deprived childhood. I just enjoy playing - if it works leave it on. If it doesn't then take it off. And I've nicked so many of the ideas from PP that I just hope someone gets a bit of use out of the pics

But 5 minutes and a free piece of filter foam - what have I got to lose. We're about to spend a 3 day long weekend on all sorts of gravel, dust and dirt. I'll pull it out afterwards and see if the filter picked any of it up.

Having the filter in does restrict the air flow a little - so I can see what they are saying about the fan not being strong enough. I dunno - the cynic in me would say - "why not put a stronger fan in ?"

... but then the possibilities are endless ...

... "why not put a stronger diff in ?" etcetera, etcetera, etcetera

        Cheers
        Chippy

Straight through on dirt to with windows shut to pressurise cabin, it works. Following someone, it's going to come in I think...

I have done the same as Chippy. Want to keep some of the dust out, but haven't given it a real test yet. (Mine cost $4.20 at Clarks)
If you look where it is fitted, it is directly over the intake to the fan. Seems to me that the air goes through there whether it is recirculated or comes in from the outside.

I travel on lots of dirt roads up here at times, use FRESH in with A/C 8 months of the year, when on dirt still do the same, when I see a vehicle about to overtake or oncoming turn to RECIRC until dust settles.

I have used this procedure for 25 years in FNQ and out west with no problems on my last two diesel 4Wd's never had to clean out the ventilation Plenums but did need to change the ventilation fan at 125k on the old 4-Runner.

I fitted a RYCO filter, cost about $33 from Autobarn, not as cheap as making it but cheaper than the Yota unit.

It's starting to get warm again over here .. and when I fired up the air-con today it had a really dusty smell. Then I remembered I hadn't checked it after our Holland Track trip ... we spent days in dust clouds so thick we had to pull over and wait for the dust to settle before we could drive on.

So I popped the glovebox out and pulled out the filter ... it was red with dust ... several minutes under the hose and the water was still running muddy red. Can't help thinking how dusty the cab would have been if the filter hadn't been there.

There seems to be differing opinions as to how effective the filter is ... but considering it's only a 3 minute job I reckon it's worth the effort.

                    Cheers

                      Chippy,
Thats good feedback, sounds like I might have to re-educate my Toyota Dealer

                      Cheers

                        Hiya Fazza

I must admit, it did surprise me a little. The car only had a very light film of dust inside. The jack hole in the back only scored a tiny bit, but it's taken 2 weeks to get all the dust out of the body panels, crevices, windows rubbers etc.

Shining a torch into the blower guts, while I had the filter out, that's also got a lot of dust in it - now I gotta figure out how to clean that - maybe a hose off the end of the garden blower / vac ??

                        Cheers

Hey Chippy, it's easy to take the blower out and clean the rotor. Remove the trim under the glove-box - a couple of screws only. Then you can see the fan assembly and the three screws that hold it in. Remove them, unplug and voila!

I used a dry paintbrush and compressed air to clean mine - it was caked in crap after 8000k of dirt roads, as was the rest of the car.

(Am cranky about that - 6 stacker is stuffed, won't play, won't eject discs, dust in all interior lights, instrument console, 3rd row seatbelts, rear light assemblies - everywhere. Car is three months/11000k's old)

Thanks for that. Sounds like a nice easy one to sort.

I've got nothing like that kind of dust ... mainly just the air vents ... and the park lights on the Sovereign bar. Everything else is holding up well.

                            Cheers
