Guess it would all come down to how you design and fabricate the airflow piping, whether a cable operated butterfly , with a alternative supply, for those creeks...... I haven't put my rig under water yet, and have no urge to do so...

But for now some cold air would be nice... Yet to do my diff breathers.. Extensions...
It's used to its capabilities and not over..... I think in the years to come my V6 will get a well thought out bonnet scoop.... Which will get a lot of attention at any GTG... Best thing about planning is it costs you nothing to design.... Cheers butane

    • I've put a V8 troopy through some deep water that poured right over the bonnet and into the scoop without any hassles so I can't see the scoop on my Prado being any different. The water, if deep enough, is going to come into the engine via the radiator, around the bash plates, and through the wheel well openings alongside the suspension towers anyway. I'm not at all worried. When the water starts coming into the cabin - that's the time to be concerned.

      • This seems to be a hot topic ATM.
I measured up the old and new scoops on a couple of Hilux's today, and it looks like the old scoop is the only one for the 1KZ due to the narrower intercooler and lack of black plastic shroud. I had an old mechanic from work concerned that the strength would go out of the bonnet when the middle ribs were cut. This made me worried a little so my question is, after all this time, has anyone noticed any flex in their bonnet at freeway speeds or off road?
I've read every post in this thread and AJ120 and Joey said there wasn't any movement in theirs which is encouraging. That's not to say I don't believe these guys but the more that agree with them, the better.

        • Zutta, 30k for a Torana Hatchback hey, I wish I still had mine, the girl I sold it too destryed it within weeks.

Bushy, I think the water comment was in relation to Butane funneling cool air via scoop to his intake on the V6, rather than getting a snorkel. I can vouch that water going over the bonnet and through the intercooler is not a problem.

Daniel, I have had absolutely zero issues with the bonnet scoop, fit and forget, the cut rib doesn't seem to have had any effect and mine has been across a lot of rough roads since it was fitted.

          Cheers Andrew

just thinking out loud here so i am keen to hear some feed back on this idea; i have been researching airflow over bonnets, under bonnet temps etc for about a week now and i am considering installing a scoop, well in fact 2. My thinking is that rather than place one directly over the intercooler, add 2: more forward and on either side of the bonnet, that feed into the factory underbonnet airflow channels. The reason that i am thinking this is that when the scoop is directly over the intercooler there is the possibility that the air coming in is disrupting the flow of air that is already moving through under the bonnet.

            anyone have thoughts on this?

            thanks in advance, Scott.
            any thoughts?

Yeah, I knew there was no doubting you AJ. Considering the places you've had the chance to go, if it ain't gonna move then it never will.

Now I have to decide whether to go ahead with this, get a set of sliders or go to Rawnsley Park for the Aust. Day weekend. I will do this mod, but it's just when.......

              • Mine has the four hole late model Hilux style scoop. There is no flex in the bonnet because the original east-west supports are still there. The front support is notched a bit, that's all.

As for disrupting the airflow, I've pulled out and discarded the left side plastic scoop that sits behind the grill and I will probably dump the right one too. The left one went to allow more air onto the tranny cooler. Given the width of the holes in the bonnet scoop I'd suggest the sheer increase in air volume is not affected in any way by the pidly bit of air coming through the original bonnet vents.

                          • Very interesting read. I've decided I'm going to do it. Have got a 2 x fin scoop from an 06 Hilux and preparing to put it on my 04 Prado. All the info on here from people that have added the scoop indicates that the cross section on the bonnet needs to be cut and looking at some of the pictures that some people have posted that makes sense. My question is, does anyone have an under bonnet photo showing the front of the scoop and how that sits? The front of the scoop has the raised notches and I'm trying to work out how it sits and is fastened to the bonnet. Any pictures would be appreciated. Cheers.
