120 Towbar recall

My local dealer doesn't even stamp the service book anymore because "all your service records are on computer."

So what if you want to sell it private or to another non-Toyota dealer? Knowing my local dealer chasing up your service records will be fun.....

Hi All,

Finally received my letter from Toyota yesterrday 9/12, some 3 weeks since mine was done, and approx 2 months since we as a group learnt about this possible problem / Safety Check.

Not good enough Toyota.

I have just received a letter from Toyota about the tow bar recall 9/12/13 Prado has to be booked in and all bolts etc have to be checked if found faulty will be replaced and if you use a non genuine W.D.kit it will be replaced with a genuine Toyota kit free of charge.

My reading of it is to update their records and probably attach warning
stickers and label vehicle as inspected at whatever date to cover their butt should
you fit a genuine faulty Toyota hitch at a later time.

I wonder if I will get one, as I am second owner - and since the engine go bang, I haven't been back to the dealership.

Got my letter today and we are the second owners of ours, plus don't use Toyota for services.

I hadn't received any letter yet - but was at my Toyota Dealer yesterday for a Corolla service they confirmed that the Prado tow bar was subject to recall.

Said they would order in all the parts including a Toyota WDH & then get me in for the check. I have a 4 bar distribution system and they confirmed that they would supply a Toyota WDH. Happy with that as my 4 bar system is very very old.

There is still NO official recall notice on the Government web site as of 9pm 12/12/2013.
looks like they do not want to have to pay for a decent tow bar that will take a HR tow hitch. Use the same Toyota bar and replace the HR hitch with a piece of crap. Much cheaper deal for them.
hope the Gov doesn't bail them out with taxpayer funds.

Got my letter today 12/12/13.
Went to Yarra Valley Toyota and booked in for next Friday, they require car for a couple of hours even though letter says 0.5hrs.
If all is ok with the bolts and their torque and a visual inspection of the bolts and genuine hitch passes then jobs done. They asked if i tow with a W.D.H and then showed me some photos of the hitch units themselves, The tech explained that due to the mounting location of the receiver / its 4 bolts in a cluster and not spread over chassis that extreme stress can cause cracks, fractures and loose bolts in the hitch area.
If damage is found all is replaced and completed on the day...

Got my letter Tuesday, even though its already been to Toyota, had new bolts put in and a couple of new stickers. One is on the tow bar, but the other is hidden inside the drivers door hinge, which i only just noticed yesterday.

Probably never will be, the letter is worded owners who incorrectly operate their vehicle with a weight distribution hitch.

Toyota out of the generosity of the own hearts will repair anything that may have broken as a result of your naughtiness.

It's not their fault, and not a defect, your just operating the vehicle the wrong way you naughty boy!

Toyota never cease to amaze me. They knew the Prado was coming in for the recall check this afternoon, but still no parts were ordered. After having the xar for an hour, service manager comes out and tells me "yes you need replacement parts. We'll call once they arrive and you can book it in." Why were'nt the parts there ready to go???

..A great tip for all esp if travelling far is to check if your dealer has stock available at the time..otherwise you'll only have to go back once they ascertain your towbar bracket/hitch is faulty (like mine)....like I said dunno why there sending out letters atm.???
