  • rattle under the car

Hey guys i have a bloody annoying as rattle underneath my car somewhere and i cannot locate it. happens when i hit small bumps and imperfections in the road and there is a small clunk when i apply brake pressure.. the rattle almost sounds like there is a washer on a bolt thats not tight enough but i have been over anything and can't find it.. I'm sure someone here will be able to advise me of what it could be...
    cheers guys

Do what i do... Turn up the radio, problem solved :P

I have a lot of those noises myself but not when braking, If it does this every time you brake i would be looking closely at your brakes/bushes/suspension component somewhere.

I get all sorts of rattles going down a bumpy road, mine comes from front right side guard and drivers door where some clips need replacing, also having bash plates might contribute to extra noise.

GL with getting it sorted, let us know what it is when you do.

Me too. I've found stones in my skid plates which I've removed and checked most suspension bits and bobs and still can't track it down. Had it about 6 months but got worse recently. Been suggested elsewhere that it's a missing backing plate/clip on the brake pads. Having mine checked in a week or two.

Tucky88, you have described almost the same rattle I have. One time I found a captive nut that come off or factory surplus most likely rolling around the chassis. Run over a bump and I get a rattle left side just as if it's a loose bolt or nut. Could be me starting to rattle loose lol

Love to know what it is before I do a long trip on the corrugation.

If you've eliminated everything mechanical it could be something such as a rock bumping around inside your chassis rail? When you hit the brakes it might be rolling forward to hit the end? Just a guess.

I would me more concern finding the baby you ran over rather than looking for its rattle

well i pulled the sway bars off on the weekend and went for a drive and it definitely not the bushes.. i believe it make be in the brakes somewhere but when i took all the wheels off to see if the callipers or anything was loose it was all tight as with no play. The noise is def not a rock or anything, its more metallic.. doesn't effect performance or anything but is very aggravating so my fault finding will continue.

i have read a few things about some clips not being replaced properly when the brakes get done.. when i bought the car the previous owner had the brakes replaced so i was wondering if that should be the cause or possibly something to do with the hand brake.. when i am parking the car and go from forward into reverse and visa versa it makes the clunking noise as i am applying the brake... has me rather confused..

There are anti rattle clips on the back of the pads. They can be left off or work loose.

New front pads & rotors and steering rack fixed my rattle. 99% sure the pads and rotors fixed it. The rack issue was discovered when looking for the rattle.

I had a rattle once, it was those stupid captive nuts ARB use for the under bar plates. They had become un-captive due to being over torqued when installed and thus the plate was hitting the bar. Hard to find without getting underneath and giving everything a hard hit. Replaced them with flange bolt/nuts and haven't had a problem since.

The sound or clunk you get when changing direction forward reverse reverse forward is normal. The pads are designed this way so the release away from the rotors to reduce friction while driving. My wife's CRV now over 10 years old does the same. If you take the wheel off and look closely you can see the pads are on a slight angle and they mostly do not touch the rotors.

My rattle turned out to be a spanner somebody had dropped down between the fuel tank and bash plate and never retrieved.
