  • Re: Cracked dashboard

Notoriously, as they cram more wiring for all the gizmos and luxury/creature comfort devices they have to find ways of reducing weight in other areas. You only have to look at the current range of airliners to see that carbon fibre and plastic has replaced much of the wing composition.

If they have thinned the dash board material, just like they have reduced the thickness of the steel panels and guards, and windscreens then it's no wonder the things are cracking. You only have to lean against the panels of the current Hilux and they dent without any effort at all.

        Same problem with mine.

First it started in the speedo console. I now see cracks on the passenger dash.

This is an email I received today in response to a message I sent to Toyota.

Thank you for contacting Toyota Customer Experience Centre.

As you can appreciate, Due to the location of our office we are unable to asses our customers vehicles. In this regard we must rely on the trained technicians within the authorised Toyota Dealer Network to inspect, asses, diagnose and if necessary rectify any customers concerns. They also have the authority to approach National Warranty or Toyota Technical if they deem appropriate.

We assure you that Toyota is committed to delivering a high quality product to our customers at all times through many quality control measures. It is for this reason that manufacturers offer new vehicle warranties on their workmanship and components to protect the consumer.

The New Vehicle Warranty is 3 years or 100,000kms (which ever occurs first) from the vehicles first date of registration. Within the Warranty period Toyota will repair or replace, at its discretion, any original equipment Toyota components found to be defective under normal use and operation in Australia.

We suggest you make a scheduled booking with your local Toyota Dealership and have them assess you concerns.

Thank you for contacting Toyota and giving us the opportunity to respond.

          Kind Regards

              Hi guys,

just a quick update, I have now 3 cracks which go 1/2 of the way across the dash, from drivers side vent to centre consol. Mine is an 03 GXL. I have been to 2 dealers and obviously no luck with out of warranty claim and sent the letter that was posted earlier with no response. Keep up the good work, i will conitinue to hassal from my end.
I was bought up in a toyota family and have only ever owned toyota's. Toyota's response has definitly made me stop and think. Don't get me wrong i love my Prado, but the wife may not be getting a new toyota car.

if this issue occurred in the States, I believe that Toyota would consider to offer a call back even if the car is out of warranty BUT sadly there isn't Prado in the States

It is occurring in the States... same car but over there it is badged as a Lexus GX470. They are having the same issue and getting the same snub. See my earlier post with links to the Lexus forums etc - this isn't just an Australian model problem.

Not wanting to cause undue alarm, but when the passenger side airbag is deployed through the cracked plastic, wont it just break-up like shrapnel. Possible outcomes could be puncturing the airbag before full deployment, or even causing disfiguring scars, now I'm not to keen to be blinded by flying shards of dashboard, or the wife and kids copping a peice of it either...
Now if thats not something Toyota aren't keen to fix, why not. :?:

ps, my '08 model is not cracked, yet.

My local dealer is 5 km from my House. Have been to see them and was advised I would need to pay for a replacement dash. I included in my complaint to Toyota that I had already been to See the local guys and the guys in Mackay and had no luck with either of them. It appears that Toyota use a standard Email signature that they send to all complaints of this Nature. Problem is it doesn't seem that they have actualy read the message I sent them.
