Especially when mine don't/ Hasn't gone Boom but i do consistently get 2,050 kilometers before my reserve light comes on then a further 200 kilometers on reserve and it does not splutter.

I know this is not a fluke with mine as it is consistent on these figures!....

I do Umina Beach to Noosa heads consistently (9hrs) so i am not driving like a nervy princess @ 90 - 100kmh.

4 x times this month i have run 200K's into reserve! .... You can not! ... Burp!!

    Its "ALL" in the numbers!!

      Update..
When I have a problem I look at all hits on that symptom... so I think it worth while to add in any experiences for future readers.. even if a thread is a bit old..
Now that this is active again...(thanks BillzOr) I will add in my latest experience of werrr noise in a manual D4D..

Yes I also had a werrr ish noise that trailed off as I decelerated or changed up a gear...
Toyota diognosed this as the idler pulleys on the serpentine (fan) belt... replaced them plus s/belt, plus timing belt and tensioner...
Still have a noise but less rumble and more werrr... (doesn't toyota ever road test after a repair?)

I took it back, said there is still a noise but a bit different.... an extra noise?

They looked again and said now it was the Alternator! Quoted $700 plus 1hr labour as a special deal.

I took it to my friendly auto electrician.. who put in a 130 Amp alternator (std is 85A) total cost $570.
I now have quiet car again :-)

What was broke? well.. seems hte alternator has a clutch on the drive pulley so it does not rip up the serpintine belt when you stop the engine from its inertia (so my Electrician says). and that clutch fails... it makes a werring noise as it free-wheels down. I did not ask if it also looses drive....

As an extra plus I am now getting 14.2V at idle, off the new alternator up from 13.7v on the old one.
      All-up .... happy again.

Just did 768 klms and used exactly 160 ltrs.
          very happy with consumption.
Towed 22 ft van 2 1/2 tonne + between 95 and 105 kph all day.
Without van, get around 1700 k' s using around 160 ltrs at 110 kph all day.
Cant beat the old slug 3 ltr, 200,000 k's, no explosions, same injectors, no smoke, no oil useage, no issues apart from the bulbar recall and brake booster recall.
DP chip set now at 6, used to set at 5 for the past 4 years.
was going to "upgrade" to the later common rail but decided to replace the springs and shocks with heavy duty units and keep the old girl instead. Replace the motor in a few years IF necessary as the body is still as good as the day I got it new in 2003.
Having now praised the old girl, it will probably crap itself on the home run in a few months time
