    Buy a Pajero
Um, no thanks.... And guys, don't get me wrong. All I said initially was that I thought the 1kz would be a bit gutless towing 2odd tonne regularly. I don't think anyone can argue with that.

The usa version tows 7000lb with the correct receiver. It has a V8 and rear air suspension though. V6 versions (4runner) I think tow 5000lb and the V8 4runner 6000.

          Hi Bob
In Europe, the same model has a 2,8 ton towingcapacity.

I regularly tow my 5,700 lbs trailer (with boat) no issues. HOWEVER, one needs to plan very carefully and consider much longer braking distances

Recently added a DP Chip which made a large difference to driveability, but it was able to tow 2 ++ tonne all day at 100+ kph.
              hi Johna,

                Re: 2.5 ton towing capacity

                Hi All,

just thinking of buying a second hand diesel prado but am concerned about being able to tow about 2300 - 2400 kgs. I have read some of the comments in the forum and a chip seems to be the way to go, has anyone done exhaust modifications as i have used this in the past to assist power but wondered if it would be worth doing on the prado?

Also when towing this sort of weight is the prado able to maintain 100 kmh up hills?

                Thanks

                Duncan

Hi Dunc. I have a 2008 D4D with DP chip and prev had a 2005 diesel also with a DP chip, both will tow at 100 no worries, but you need to consider the size of the hill and the weight of the van. I found that my van weighed considerably more than what was on the comp plate, I think the van was weighed without Gas bottles, water, awnings or spare wheel. In a lot of cases the caravan industry is unreliable with van weights. My van weight loaded now is 1980kg. with a ball weight of 220 kg.Hope that helps

I have an un-chipped 06 TD, and I would say NO. Not unless you want to strain the absolute bejeezers out of it, which can lead to cracking the head etc. Especially if you push her hard in the hot weather. Sometimes it depends on momentum though. When I tow down south (South Aus) to the fleurieu peninsula, there are large stretches where I would only average 70kmh. This is because you struggle up a hill, come down the other side, have to take a 50kmh corner, and directly after, you're faced with another hill climb. These sections are a pain in the arse. Over on Yorke peninsula, however, you have long straight runs in between the hills when crossing it from east to west, so you have plenty of momentum and climb then at about 85 - 90kmh. All depends...

All depends on the height of the hill, but if you drive well ahead of yourself and not 50 mtrs as some do, you can nearly keep to the speed limit up the Hume and Pacific highways from Albury to North of Brisbane.
If you are towing that weight I would suggest sitting around the 90 to 95 klms per hour as it uses a lot less fuel and only adds about 2 hours over a 1500klm trip.
I am a slow learner and took about 95000 k's to wake up ops:

I would be very uncomfortable towing such weight if we had hills here, which luckily we do not! If the road is challenging, I would pull out my Land Rover LR for that duty, it is rated at 3,500 KGs.

                          Hi Guys,

                          Silly question.

I'm looking at buying a boat, 1300KG dry on an unbraked trailer.
I have an 07 diesel GXL, which has unbraked capacity of 750kg.

So presume there is no way I can tow this with my Prado? Presume it is illegal?

There doesn't seem to be many cars around that have 1500kg unbraked capacity.

No car in Aus will have any towing capacity over 750kg unbraked... It against regulations.

                            Anything over 750kg requires brakes.

I wouldn't think a trailer can be registered without brakes if it has a rating greater than 750kg

Yep that is correct, no brakes on a trailer = 750kg max. Fitting brakes is usually not a big deal on most trailers.

                                Thanks Wooley and AJ120,

You would thinks so, and this would lead to less confusion!

With fitting brakes, presume any mechanic/engineer can do it? without additional permit/paperwork?

                                Thanks and regards, Duong
