  • Air con/heater problem

    Hi guys
As a new Pradopoint member I thought I'd drop a post about my '06 GXL that is causing me some grief. I have seen this post elsewhere so assume some of you may have the solution. Basically I only get cold air out of the driver's air vents. The passenger vents are produce nothing more than ambient temp air. All vents have good air flow. In an attempt to solve the issue I disconnected the heater hoses completely - no change. Local A/C guy said the gas was OK as the driver's side was cold. I just don't get it. With the fan blowing through the evaporator and no heater connected, why am I not getting cold air on the passenger side??

Does it have dual climate control. If so that could be your problem.

No dual air. Sorry. Forgot to mention that.

Are all the dampers in behind the dash/console working correctly? Any of the push/pull ties broken off?

Thanks for the reply Matty. By dampers I assume you mean the doors that close off the heater unit from the main airflow? Yes, I had a look down the vent ducts with a camera scope and all seem to be functioning correctly. All the cables appear to be connected properly as well. A mechanic friend said that a piece of the interior filter may be blocking off the A/C. The filter material was completely missing when I inspected it. But if that was the case I don't think I would be getting cold air anywhere.

Not all of the models come standard with the interior AC filter - although, i'm not sure whichs ones do or don't. I know my 2007 GXL didn't - but i have fitted one myself...
Yes, you are correct, i was referring to the "doors" that close/open the vents...

Unfortunately - i am now out of ideas though...

sorry guys, but since you mentioned the dampers/doors issue , i just noticed that when i choose the mode to where i want the air to come from ie front upper vents or lower vents i still get air from the upper vents , could be the dampers is the reason? where to reach them ? what could be causing that?
my car don't have cabin air filter

i think some of the control pull/pull actuators can be seen by removing the side pieces of the centre console in the foot well... there's probably others higher up as well... but i wont even begin to guess as to how to get to them. I would start at checking that everything is connected to the back of your selector switch first (assuming its not electronic)...

I have the same problem on my 05 gxl, evaporator is cactus.
A/C bloke had a probe down vents, he said it was wet from gas leaking.

Would be interested in hearing back on the evaporator replacement. Can you post when done? I had another look at mine today after taking half the dash out. Can't see any signs of leakage anywhere including the evaporator. I'm beginning to think this has something to do with the dual system used by the Grande. The inside mouldings effectively split the system into left and right. On the other hand, I could just be down on gas. Despite what the A/C guy said, I'm only getting 15 degrees out of the right vent and 22 out of the left.

Good news - problem solved. Found out today that my A/C had never been serviced since new (2006). Local guy drained the old gas, changed the filter (bag, not a receiver/dryer) and refilled. All vents now producing chilly air and no leaks detected.

Thanks for all the help. As a tip - don't trust everything so called tradespeople tell you and get other opinions.

Does anyone have the OEM part number for the evaporator?

And can the evaporator from the GX470 or 4Runner work in place of the Prado's?

still have to find the front windscreen damper/gate ,9 i know it is jamed as i don't get air from the windscreen vents.
