Time for an update on this one. I delivered a prototype to an automotive engineer for towbar compliance testing last week. I have recieved an extensive engineers report after the testing with loads of facts and figures about what they tested and the results and lots of complicated figures about how many newtons of force were applied blah blah blah.

The summary of the report is that it "passed easily" So I can now legally get a compliance sticker made and attach that to each bar and no problems about hooking up the trailer or van behind this one.

Here is one picture from the testing I was provided, I have a couple more in the actual report but cant work out how to extract them from the document.

Just as a matter of interest, the company I used does most of TJM's work and was also recomended to me by the government department that does all of the ANCAP crash testing in Australia.

I have a few bars on the go at the moment, my powder coaters are away on holidays at the moment and not long after they return I am away for 6 weeks giving my rear bar a real world test through the Australian Outback. Having any ready before I go is just not going to happen, but upon my return it will be full steam ahead to get these made and sent out to whoever wants them.

I will aim to get a price sorted and start a for sale thread before I leave, giving people a month or 2 before I start in ernest sending them out.

    Cheers Andrew

      Nice work Andrew.
Not long now. Has anyone asked you about welding or integrating rear recovery points in the back of the bar ( not using the hitch) like the bar that Buds customs have now fabricated up for the 120 Prado as a matter of interest. See here for pic in facebook

        Ah recovery points

If someone wanted me to add tie down loops I could, but recovery points are a whole different kettle of fish. Ever wonder why ARB don't have recovery points on their bullbar but only tie down or tow points?

So here's the deal, most people will use a 9000kg snatch strap, so points need to be rated above that, so say 5000kg each and then you use a bridle. To give them a SWL or WLL they also need to be tested, and the chassis of the vehicle also needs to be tested as 10000kg is way over Toyotas rated capacity for the Prado. So for the towbar test they could replicate a chassis for testing as I used the Toyota towbar mounting points and we know the chassis is rated to 2500kg. To test these things you don't just put 2500kg of force on to test that rating, you apply much more pressure. So I would need to supply a vehicle (mine) and risk damaging the chassis to have points truly tested and rated.

As I said, I could weld on some tie down loops and what you do with them is your business. I doubt I would weld them on the rear face of the bar, IMO that look a bit crap and would be great for busting knee caps. I could add loops to the bottom of the mounting points in line with the chassis rails, they would hang down a bit. As I said, these would be tie down points only.

        Cheers Andrew

Just found this post, lucky I did as I was about to start building my own!! Great work mate, this is basically exactly what I had in mind, even with the wheel lining up with the existing cavity. I had actually planned to make one big long swing arm which had both the jerry and wheel holder in one... Not sure if it would have been too much weight or not? A couple of questions

              How heavy is the bar?
How much are you selling them for (inc shipping to Gold Coast)?
              Delivery ETA?
Can you send me some Pics of the mounting points on the side? I have my remote res canisters mounted to the existing chassis holes, so I may have to relocate to inside the bar.

I am making the first batch at the moment in between a few other things. Just waiting to dot a couple of i's and cross a couple of t's before putting up a forsale thread. Price will be $2250. I'll post more detail in the for sale section early next week.

                  Cheers Andrew

Andrew, you're gunna get me in (more) trouble with the missus. I convinced her that I needed the Tracklander roof-rack for carrying a second spare. Now, what excuse can I come up with this time?

That you are getting old and throwing the spare up on the roofrack is going to damage your back. Look at this new idea? And it leaves the roof rack spare for water, fuel and your shoes!

Thanks for the understanding and support. How about: Barb, AJ says I need the rear bar to balance the car due to the weight of the ARB bullbar up front?

I've been dropping hints about this bar for a couple of months. Now when I mention it, she just rolls her eyes.
Looks like I've found the secret, nag until they lose interest and agree to anything. Wait, isn't that what they've been doing to us for years??????
