  • Gday D4D

I have OME 2" Lift kit to mine and i am still very happy with my choice.

I installed them 09-2010 and have done over 44,600km since then. (Had no issues with sway bar or any other components rubbing).

The only extra weight i am carrying from stock standard is a 36ltr LPG tank and sovereign bull bar and the set-up is definitely more ridged than OEM but a huge improvement on OEM.. No more bottoming out or learching into corners.

To date they have not sagged or leaked and all bushes are still as new.

I personally will not be going for a softer shock if i ever had to replace them. (Some may prefer the softer ride).

The nitro's did take a while to settle as they was a very hard ride for about month and i also did not bother to do a wheel alignment for about 1 x week to allow the suspension settle first.

The coils are a medium but the nitro shockies are toughies

    Fronts Coils ------ 2884
    Rear Coils -------- 2895
    Front Strut Nitro - 90000
    Rear Shocks Nitro - 60004
    Stone Guard ------- OME661

Back then i paid $1,330.00 inc gst all-up.

My set-up is for the D4D and may be a bit ridged if a petrol model with no extras.

    Cheers

    • The price I was quoted for the following;
      Front- 884 springs
      Front- 90000 shock/strut
      Rear-896 springs
      Rear- 60004 shocks
      Wheel alignment
      Fitted

Was $1667. Drive away no more to pay. This is slightly cheaper than what I was quoted 12 months ago.

I didn't have to pay for labor back then so saved there ...... Had to pay $50 for a full wheel alignment and i did a tyre rotation/tyre pressures just before the alignment as un-even tyres will show on the figures (I used to do full wheel alignments with both the laser and mirror type).

I bought the stone guards for the lower part of the rear shock absorbers to protect the lower shockie compression cylinders from getting damaged as they are right in the line of fire from debris being flicked off the front wheels.

If ever assembling suspension "Never" use oil base grease or oil on any rubber bushing or they will swell/rot and get chewed out. (only use rubber grease EG: pbr rubber grease). This will also make assembly easier and stop suspension grounching noises.

        Cheers

        • I dug out the original suspension measurements and just re-measured with interesting results. I don't know what the fuel load was other than today's measurements which is approx 1/2 full. I would have expected the rear to be lower considering I now have loaded drawers fitted. This is with the 884/N140 in the front and 895/N141 in the rear. I planned to swap out the shocks to 90000 & 60004 but I may fit new front springs whilst I am it it.

          • Just a question, but in the rear suspension OME setup, when running the 2896 rear spring, is there much diffence between running the 60005 vs 60004 nitrocharger sport shock?

I have the 2896/60005 combination which I find perfect when loaded and towing, but understanably a bit rigid for everyday driving.

            Welcome any comments.

            • Hi Lodgey - from my basic understanding, the 60004s are a bit more responsive than the 60005's. I am getting my factory suspension upgraded today (can't wait to get the car back!), and all the research I did, found the best combo for me was to go with 2896 springs and 60004 in the back with 2884 and 90000 combo in the front.

I am guessing, that you have a similar situation to me - during the winter months, the car is a taxi service for my kids and their friends, but come spring, the camp box goes in and the car loads up to put additional 300kg in the back.

I am by no means an authority on this subject, and others will probably have more technical advice, but that's my thoughts...

              • Lodgey I just replied to your other post but one thing I forgot, do you have the height measurements from when the suspension was fitted to the V6? Be worth comparing them with what you have now.

                  • Hi all,

Some great details here (I've tried to read all 31 pages :-) )

I currently run a set of ToughDog adjustable shocks and heavy-duty +40mm springs up front on my d-4D 120 and a set of ToughDog adjustable shocks on the back, with an AirbagMan upgrade to the rear air suspension (I have a UK-spec LC5 - the same as your Grande). My issue is that the front suspension has pretty much collapsed after 30 months and less than 30000km - out of warranty so no joy from the supplier. The ride height is less than stock, and one shock is weeping - and there is the most awful squeak from the front - both sides, so I suspect some bushes are now shot ...

i run an ARB Sahara bar up front, full set of ASFIR plates underneath, a 12000lb winch with synthetic rope, full-length ally roof rack and roof tent (Howling moon), steel sliders, rear cargo drawers and a Waeco 40l fridge,Leisure battery in the back, FoxWing awning, LightForce spotties, 265/70 BFG ATs or Cooper STTs, a 40mm body lift. and because it's a UK vehicle I have 2 starting batteries in the engine bay as standard as well as all the cold-weather stuff like engine pre-heaters, seat heaters, HeatShot washer fluid heater, etc. The vehicle is not my DD :-)

I'm considering the following, but am in a bit of a quandary based on what you've all posted - I thought it was all clear this morning!!

                    For the front:
                    OME 3-0886 spring
OME 3-90000 Front sport strut HD

                    Rear:

OME 3-60004 Rear Sport Shock HD

                    or

OME 3-60005 Rear Sport Shock XHD

Main question is - is this way too harsh for tar / gravel roads with the load I usually carry and when fully laden for 2 for 2 - 3 weeks to, say, Morocco? Would anything less be too little?? I think I can live with the unladen harshness if the laden performance is outstanding - if there's not a lot in it I'd rather go a softer set up. I don't go in for rock-crawling stuff - it's mostly overlanding, although I've been known to take on teh odd challenge section before ;-) So flex is fairly important too.

I'm after a 50mm lift and better handling and load-bearing characteristics, with, hopefully, the ability to see out more than 2 salty-road winters ! I'll be fitting the rear shock protectors in any event.

Also considering the heavy-duty Pedders setup, which is slightly cheaper (read: less costly ...) but I've had OME on an 80 before and was very happy...

Thought / comments please? Knowing what you who have done know now, what would you do differently??

                    Many thanks guys.

                    • I am very happy with my setup - refer a couple of posts up. I would go the 60004 rear shocks. I don't think this will cause too harsh a ride. Others may have more to say though...

                      • G'day all,
I had an ARB OME front and rear suspension fitted to my 120GXL D4D about three years ago. Over the past 12 months I've noticed the ride has become harsher. Yesterday I just had new BFG AT's fitted and the ride isn't much better. Do you think the bushes have worn out or any other ideas?

                          • OME suspension lift

OME suspension question as Im no expert on suspension. my ride from original suspension was
                            FL-730 FR-735 RL775 RR-770
After OME suspension fitted with 90000 struts & 2884 coils to the front & 60112 shocks & 2895 coils fitted to the rear I measured
                            FL-780 FR-780 RL-820 RR-823
AT the 500KM checkup the measurements were
                            FL-777 FR-775 RL-820 RR-820
These were installed on the 24/12/13 so almost a year old. After reading AJ120 thread on strut spacers I thought this may be an option as I intend to add a winch and bashplates in the future. the only extra weight I have added since these measurements have been custom sliders which are probably about 20kg per side maximum. this prompted me to go and measure my suspension to see if I could accommodate these spacers. anyway it turns out I,ve got plenty of room . The prado is a weekender so Ive only done 10000KM since the suspension was installed. the heights are as follows as per 7/12/14
                            FL-763 FR-770 RL-804 RR-812
AFter a year & 10000k should I expect this level of drop or should I be asking some questions as the OME comes with a 40000km 2YR warranty even though I would expect the suspension to last double what the warranty states.
Any input would be much appreciated from those in the know
