  • Suspension fix for a fat front end

Just over 12 months ago i updated the suspension with Bilstein BE5-A712 and BE5-A713 shocks with Kings standard KTFS-101 and KTRS-102 springs. The combo has been perfect, however I've just added:

20kg post recall sovereign bullbar brackets
    20kg sovereign bullbar winch cradle
    20kg Kaon bash plate
    30kg Winch

Heights have gone from 775mm front and 795mm rear down to 760mm front and 795mm rear so i've dropped 15mm at the front. Also the front wallows around and dips under brakes a bit more. I've got the circlips set on the middle, what would be the best way to prop this fatty up?

Install the raised KTFR-101 in the front only and drop the circlip?
Install 2" raised (KTFR-101/KTRR-102) all round and leave the circlip on the middle?
Get 2" raised all around like above but get HD springs for the front?
Move circlip to the top but it would reduce droop?

Ideally i dont want to replace shocks since they are only quite new, most driving is on road, dirt roads with day trips on moderate state forest tracks so i dont need crazy articulation. Any suggestions welcome.

Ok i just re-posted my original post since it was wiped due to the PP issues along with the great advice i received. So springs alone wont cut it and i have to suck it up and get new shocks.

Is the BE5D563 & 24-217897 the most ideal Bilstein shocks for my configuration? Is there any issues running these shocks with the KTFR-101/KTRR-102 springs such as needing to lengthen brake lines, do swaybar links or the springs coming out at full articulation?

Best would be to call John at Zordos suspension in Brisbane. He will get the shocks and springs right for your setup. He does heaps of Prados and FJs.

Thanks drwormy, i was hoping you would see this thread again. I emailed Mark, he seems like a great guy and i will be happy to buy my shocks from him. But he threw me a curve ball and said the he's noticed the King coils free length are a bit shorter and the 24-217897 may fall out at full articulation. He recommends Dobinsons.

I already have the KTFR-101/KTRR-102 springs, so i need something that will work with those springs. I cant find any mention of someone running BE5-D563 & 24-217897 and having the rear fall out. So its got me confused on what to buy now.

The open length of the 217897 is 615 mm from memory. Its close with a 390 mm spring. My guess is the KTRR will get you 40 mm of lift, and you'll end up with a rear spring spacer. Ring John and speak to him about it.

Thanks mate, for that spring it says:

            Rear Shock Open Travel Closed
            Bilstein 24-217897 610 230 380

I'm not real keen on fitting spacers, plus i believe those springs/shocks are already towards the limit of needing to lengthen the brake lines and change the swaybar links. It just seems overly hard doing a 2" lift with Kings/Bilstein, i thought it would of been done a thousand times already.

Most people end up with A713 or 715 shocks in the rear, which are pretty short. Unfortunately Kings make good springs for the front, Dobinsons have the best range for the rear.

Yes i've got the 712/713 currently with Kings non lifted springs and have read the 713 is no good with lifted springs but i need to regain some clearance and correct the wallowing from the winch etc. Bought the Kings lifted springs, just need shocks.

But I'm starting to give up on doing a lift, it doesn't seem possible to do a 2" lift using Kings/Bilstein unless adding spacers etc.

Hi, this is an old thread but you never posted the outcome?

Did you end up installing the KTFR-101 on the bottom circlip and where did that put you on front height?
