You got me to thinking if they're LT or passenger. I assumed (the mother of all f/ups) that with the warranty that they are LT. So i sent an email to Yokohama simply asking if the GO-12s are LT or passenger construction. 5 days later and i still haven't received a reply. So i apologise if i made a wrong statement the other day

If you look at the size chart on the Yoko website it shows certain sizes with 2 load ratings. I'd assume that these were the LT sizes as the load ratings are quite high. As the 265/65/17 only has the standard 112 rating it'd be a safe bet its a P construction. I also doubt that they could achieve an H speed rating in an LT tyre. Still it'd be good if Yoko could confirm this for you.2003 V6, Auto, GXL, Factory Bullbar, Rhino Roofbars, Bosch and Hella spotties, Cooper AT3, Bilstein shocks, Ironman awning, GME UHF, MaxTrax.

Still have my heart on the STZ's (just waiting on my cheque from Mr Swan) I did look at the GO-12's and was also eyeing off the new ST-Maxx but the reports of noise (and the price), scared me away. At the end of the day, Rob's (Stevensr34) feedback, together with feedback from chrisozman has cemented my decision. Hopefully I will have these before I head off to Winton with caravan in tow in 2 weeks time. (school hols).

I have just completed the cape with these tyres. They were great on rocks, highway and gravel but they let me down in soft sand ( at vrilya point) got bogged on the beach and at noolans were the soft bottom required a more aggressive tyre. The others in the group all had bfg's atz and none of them had any problems. I replaced all my tyres for this trip, so they were all new. What's worse is I replaced my bfg's with these. I'll be going back to bfg's when the time comes.

It's a free world - you can do whatever you like...
BTW: You mention a BF Goodrich ATZ? Is this a typo? There is no such tyre...
If you meant a BF Goodrich AT, then it actually has a less aggressive tread than the Mickey Thompson STZ!
Not sure how you got bogged on the beach at Vrilya Point - we went there and had no problems - beach work requires momentum (a run-up) and tyres at 24psi cold. I wouldn't blame the tyre for this. I'd say you needed more momentum!
Nolans Brook is another issue entirely. We encountered a very soft sand base here with lots of water above it. Technique is everything here. We had a snatch strap attached with the previous vehicle gently pulling us through Nolans. This worked a treat.
In summary:
Any tyre is a compromise.
STZ is a pretty good compromise between on-road manners and off road performance.
The difference in tread between the STZ and a BFG AT is minimal - if anything, the STZ has a more aggressive tread.
If you had difficulties at obstacles on a Cape York trip, when others with BFG AT tyres didn't, then I suggest it was not the tyres to blame...
What pressures were you running vs others?
What car weight were you vs others?
What engine/transmission combination do yo have vs others?
How much experience do you have in these off road conditions vs others?
These are all extremely relevant variables to altering the outcome of an off-road trip.Last edited by stevensr34; 29-09-2011, 09:55 PM.Rob.
