Returned from a week at Fraser Is recently - tyres worked fine there - lowered to 23psi. Camped up at Sandy Cape, in very dry weather (bushfires around) and had no problems on any tracks/bypasses.Originally posted by craigm View PostRob, How are yours performing?
Other than that, as the daily commute car, the tyres are 99% on bitumen - pumped to 40psi - and really quite OK here too!
Tread depth has gone from 13mm (new) to about 11mm now, after 20,000km. I think that's pretty decent rate of wear (or lack of).Rob.

I think the RRP was $370 a shot, although the last quote I received a few weeks ago was up to $390!!Originally posted by stevensr34 View PostWas that RRP? - or did you bargain?
I couldn't find anyone willing to trade the original tyres, from brand new, so I shelved the purchase.
The std tyres retail for about the $289 mark but no one would trade - not even a $100 a pop - so stuff them!! NO SALE

I too am thinking of STZ in the 275/70/17.
One of my D694's delaminated yesterday and has a huge egg in it now .. Time to go, but got excellent mileageo and 5 yrs out of them!
I really want the 265/70/17 but they arent going to be released here for a while in the STZ range, so the 275 is the next step.
My vehicle is certified with the bigger tyres, so being they are only 8mm bigger than the MTZ its worth the try.

A few weeks on all is well. Tyres fill good on the hwy dry or wet, mostly wet the way the weather has been in Sydney. done some sand driving and had no problem. Next bid trip is to Fraser Island in April. Few mods to do by then.early 2006 grande Diesel, arb deluxe bar , x9 superwinch, snorkel , reverse camera, MT STZ tyres ,more upgrades on the way.

What did you have to do to get it certified for bigger tyres?Originally posted by Piggy View Post

Marc,
Here in NSW, you need to take the vehicle to an RTA approved engineer, who will check over the vehicle and run some tests, including a GPS check to ensure the speedo isn't out by more than is allowed.
Costs $300 + GST for the tests plus $200 + GST for the GPS check - around $600 all up.
There's an engineer at Hornsby - Morry Akbarian at Mobility Engineering.2004 Grande V6 4.0, ARB colour coded bar, Magnum 9k winch, dual battery, HD King springs/Bilstein F4-BE5-A712-MO (front), Airbag Man extended airbags/OME Sport 150R shocks (rear), OziOffroad diff drop, BFG KM2s, Hella 225s, ARB CKMA12 compressor, Rhino-Rack HD bars x3/alloy tray, Sunseeker II awning, Prodigy, TX3340, cargo barrier, 50L water tank with 12v pump, rear storage system, Waeco 60L with slide, rear door table, rear camp light.

What is the side wall construction on the STZ's? I've got BFG's that are 2 x steel plies + 3 polyester + 1 x nylon in the tread and 5 x polyester in the sides. I've never had an issue with these except for handling on corners on bitumen in the wet.
Every blown tyre I've had has been a side wall blow out (Grandtreks) so I'd be interested in the construction of the STZ's if someone would kindly read the side and post the details. The MT website dosen't have this info.

Hi Guys just following up on this thread where I posted last March when trying to get hold of Mickey Thomson Tyres and tossing up between STZ's or 4 Ribs. I have also posted this on the thread bagging Cooper St's as its relevant there.
Over the last 8 months I've done +15k on a set of the ST Maxx heavy duty all terrain tyre (has a new silicon compound) and am very pleased. I got them in May 2011 not long after they first came into the country. I still haven't quite got used to the look of the 'tread' on the side walls but its grown on me and they loves ruts. Havn't spotted that many on other cars yet. I took them on because stock in Mikey T's MTZ4-Ribs was unavailable at the time, and am now glad it turned out this way.
I was very surprised how quiet they are on the bitumen and they handel well when avoiding the odd blue-tongue. Tread pattern and compound has been great in the high country over the wet months on gravel roads, steep rocky tracks, wet clay, snow and muddy ruts. No noticable aqua-plaining at 100km/h in torrential rain. Recently spent a week beach driving on the NSW north coast. I first drove onto the beach access without adjusting tyre pressure and realsied it doesn't matter what tyres you have with 40psi on sand. After I let them down I had no drama.
For sand driving I only let them down to 28psi, which got me through the soft stuff and also let me get back on the bitumen to the nearest servo to pump them back up.
For Hwy driving on long hauls when carying a load, I run them at 40-42psi to reduce rolling resistance,
But for every day driving 38 psi is much more comfortable.
No chipping to report yet, but I'm not one to put my foot down or spin wheels when offroad, and I haven't really done "high spead driving" across outback gravel roads or mine sites! Only problem is that because of the larger diameter of the 265/70R17, they rub slightly on full lock. At least I can now justify a liftkit to myself. The spedo is now right on - spedo says 100km/h - GPS says 99km/h.
I am rotating 5 tyres so will expect 90-100K out of them over 4 years. Got them back then for $394 per tyre (fitted) from Guest 4wd in Victoria, so that works out at $100 per tyre per year for a premium product.
Not sure how performance of the tyre will change when the tread pattern gets lower in another few years, so will re-vist discussion with my 2 cents then.
Safe driving,
Rev.Revhead
