Since starting this thread I have done 35000 kms on these tires. I have taken them from Victoria on a 15000 km out back trip with no puntures or any chippig unlike my Cooper ST shod travel companion who had to replace two of his chipped tires in Alice on the way back and the other four when we got back home. The weakest point of these tires is driving on fine sand where pressure has to lowerd to 20psi or they tend to dig in.Grip in mud is very good and feed back is very good on loose gravel surfaces. The tires look like they will last about 50000 km and I will be replacing them with the same. The slight name change is due to new e-mail account and not remembering pass word.

        AT2s

Have just put 20000kms on mine, have been a great tyre so far. Have not done any major off road work, about 500ks of dirt and 1 day of wet clay station roads, supplied good grip and feedback to the driver. On road i love these tyres. No aquaplaining like the dunlops and good grip on wet roads. They do tramtrack more then the dunlop at20s did , but the roads where i live have a lot of road train usage. Tyre wear has been great, and i expect i will get 60000ks no problems. Will be going to the cape in august, so will have a better off road report then, with some photo,s if somebody can tell me how to put them on, thanks Wayne.

Had to go to the trye shop today to order tyre for my forester XT b4 I sell it, so while I was there I asked about the Generals. They had no experience with them, and quoted me $263ea, sound cheap for the reviews they have got on here. I mentioned Coopers ans the guy turned red, apparently they see a few, usually being replaced by a different brand, b4 they have run out of tread, either for poor performance, or bad chipping.

Unless some bad feedback starts appearing, or something better comes along, I think the Grabbers will be my next tyre.

            Discontinued?

I had a look on the General Tyre site for more info on these tyres and I cant find the 265/65/17 Size anymore. A phone call to Bob Jane today also turned up with a "not available in that size".

            I went here to check

When I got the tyres fitted on the forester I spoke to the boss about the Grabbers, he mentioned the biggest problem with them is the stock control. 1 month you can't get them the next they have so many that they are ringing him offering a good price because they have too many. The issue with that is knowing my luck, I'd spike a tyre and it would be a couple of months where they have no stock!!!!

                  General Grabbers.

I had Grabber TRs on a Defender (they're fitted as standard on new Defenders) and did 66K before selling it and they had probably 50 - 60% tread left.
On my present Defender (I've got a Prado as well so don't tell me to go away... yet) I've got Grabber AT2s and they don't appear to be wearing quite as well after 40K, but have only a small amount of chipping although I've done a fair bit of rough road/rocky trails.
Good tyre and although they don't seem to be quite as good wearing as the TRs, I'm definitely thinking of these for the Prado in a couple of months.

MY at2s have just done 45000, have just come back from the cape. They performed very well, run at30psi on the dirt and had to go as low as 18psi on the soft sand, towing the trailer, aprox weight 1000kg. These tyres are wearing very well, but all long distance driveing,as i live 300ks to closest town that my WIFE will shop at.I changed over from the grand trecs at35000ks and still had about another 20000ks left in them, now on the trailer, Should get another 20000 out of the at2,A very stiff side wall for a passenger construction tyre. As a lease veh , i could only put on 265/65 but will go something in 265/70 LTs when these wear out. Have not done any serious mud work with them, so can not make any comment about what there like in mud. Thanks Wayne.

                      Re: General Grabbers A/T2

I had them on my Rav4 B4 we traded on the prado. We took the Rav far more places than it should've gone and I can only put that down to the tyres as it had no mods and no low range (and of course my superb driving  ). Very impressed with them and may consider again if there's anything to fit the GX.

                        Re: General Grabbers A/T2

                        Guys,

Just out of interest, having my second set of Grabber's fitted tomorrow, just thought i'd share my thoughts if anyone is interested .

Figures - I have covered 43,000 miles in around 18 months on mine and i have approximately 7-8mm of tread left. A brand new set are going on to my vehicle because it is Morocco-bound and the current set are being transferred on to Claire's 90.

Punctures - In the time they've been on mine i have had two punctures, both on salisbury plain, one because i was stupidly running at about 40 something PSI and the other was a piece of steel bar sticking up out of the mud i.e. the type they reinforce concrete with, which is a show stopper for pretty much any tyre! Other than that they are in remarkably good condition with no missing tread blocks, cracking or sidewall damage, you certainly wouldn't say they had done 40+ thousand miles.

Tyre rotation - one, simply fronts to back at around 20,000 miles and the spare has only been used to get me back from salisbury plain twice, other than that never touched.

                        Grip:

Dry Tarmac - At least as good as the Dunflops the vehicle came with only the sidewalls are stiffer which makes the tyre stand up straighter and the steering feels more direct.

Wet Tarmac - I don't drive my LC fast but for normal driving i have never found them slipping or wanting for traction in any way on wet tarmac.

                        BUT

if you are travelling on a motorway and hit standing water at anything above about 50 you will know all about it. As the name suggests, they 'grab' any surface they're on and the deceleration can be quite sudden. If only one side hits the water, as is usually the case you will need to have your wits about you or else the steering wheel will be snatched from your hands!

A big drawback, no not really, just be aware and drive accordingly.

Snow - Simply put, impressive. In the deep snow we had this winter they were worth their weight in gold, i could have been driving on dry tarmac as far as the LC was concerned. i was flitting around in up to a foot of snow with absolutely no concern. i even towed a 3 tonne box van up a snow covered slope and they didn't even slip.

Mud - Now it has to be said that i do not deliberately try and get mine stuck and i'm not into driving it through mudholes if it can be helped! In mud i have never been stuck and i would say that Grabbers are probably one of the grippiest AT tyres on the market. i have never been stuck for want of traction in mud (or anything for that matter) and that includes three trip to Lincomb Farm and all that's associated with it, numerous trips to salisbury plain etc etc.....

Ice - Same as a road tyre really (or maybe any tyre) if it's slippy, they will slip.

Rocks/Gravel - Seem to do the job absolutely fine, never had a problem but i dont have a lot of experience to compare to! One thing i will say is that they love to collect small stones in the tread and hold on to them for days. Doesnt seem to do any damage but can be irritating. Only other thing to say is that i have not had any problems with rought tracks shredding my tread, all my treadblocks are still in good condition with sharp and defined edges. no visible damage to sidewalls either. Western Sahara trip will be the acid test for this however.

Sand - tested on beaches and pay and play sites, which i appreciate is not the most accurate assessment but i will report back after Sahara. Seem to be pretty good and air down well, i.e. tread is elongated but sidewalls do not bulge out too bad.

Price - in the size i run, 265/70/R16i can usually get five for less than 500quid delivered. sometimes takes some shopping around, but in any case achievable.

Disclaimer - All of this is entirely opinion of Tommo

                          Hi

I use to have it AT2 on my Disco 3 /LR3 when I was in the UK

I will back up what Tommo says. Impressive tyre for quite cheap.

I am now tyring to get some here... but it seems to be hard.
Also I am running on 18'

I will continue to shop around.
