    Re: Pirelli Scorpion ATR

Hi there. I thought I would add my vote of confidence to the Scorpions. I have had them since I bought the car new as I traded the Dunlops. We have just clocked up 74,000 klm on them. As a guide we have done a fair few trips including - crossing the Simpson Desert (once), Poeppel Corner (3 times), Cameron Corner (once), Strzelecki Track (2 times), Oodnadatta Track (2 times), Walkers Crossing (2 times) and Birdsville Track to name a few. We have ALWAYS adjusted tyre pressure to suit the conditions and the tyres have never had a problem and each time we get back on the bitumen, you wouldn't know we left it. I am not yet ready to replace them. Probably will be by end of year to be safe and will get the same again.

So in my experience they are a safe, comfortable, durable and capable on\off road tyre. Hope that helps anyone looking to make a choice in the future.

      Re: Pirelli Scorpion ATR

      Gday,

Just threw a set of 5 on my 120 (265/65R17) and so far have found them to be awesome. Even the handbrake (Wife) commented on how good they feel.
I find them quiet for an A/T, nice ride (36psi) and gotta say they are phenomenal in the wet weather. Have had some good downfalls recently and they do no budge in the wet on cornering or braking. And from what i read they are not too bad offroad even though i did not buy them for that reason. Getting a set of MTZ's for play

      Cheers John

        Re: Pirelli Scorpion ATR

Just put a set of 265 65 17's on the prado last week. (Non - LT)

IMO - they are quieter than the 50,000KM old GrandTreks and are definitely a much better road tyre.

        EDIT: Typo on tyre width.

            Oops = typo

And mine were at 38PSI also just on the pressure topic.

              Re: Pirelli Scorpion ATR

I'm looking to get a set of All Terrain tyres since my Prado came with AT20s on the rear and spare (all fairly well worn) and Kuhmo road tyres (look fairly new) on the front. Pretty much decided to get the Scorpion ATRs but that still leaves me with the question of P or LT. My local Bob Jane has quoted $350 each for the P and $388 each for the LT - probably have to wait a couple of months for them to get them in, but that isn't a problem.

Can anyone comment on which is best to go for? I have read that the P is 6 ply and the LT is 10 ply but not too sure on what that actually means? I'm guessing the LT has a stronger side wall so should be better off road but does that come at the expense of a harder ride on the road?

U can get bridgie 694 in LT for a bit over $300, they r just as good if not better. That is dear for pirelli.

If you feel that the ride is too hard, then let some air out but that comes at the expense of slightly poorer fuel economy. The Prado is a comfy car and it's suspension is set up that way. I swap between the AT20s and MTRs and can't really tell the difference with regards to ride hardness. I would veer towards LT for better puncture resistance. If your tyre dealer has both, it might be worthwhile checking the stiffness of the sidewall of both types and see if you can feel the difference.

Really comes down to what sort of driving you do. If you are gunna go offroad i will definately go the LT, but if its mainly on the road and only dirt roads/tracks etc the Passenger would be a better option if your conscious about comfort.

Thanks amts, None of the tyre dealers have either in stock so I can't check this. A friend of mine is getting a set of Scorpion ATR LTs for his Triton on Thursday so I will be able to look at those but nothing to compare it to. Sounds like the LT could be the better way to go for puncture resistance though.

Well, the intention is to go offroad, but only time will tell Looks like another vote for the LTs then.

Thanks Hutch - so much choice, so many views Not sure about the 694s, seem to be a lot of negative comments about them from my searching, although you can probably say that about any tyre. I was also looking at the Yokohama GO12 (friend of mine got a set this week) but they are more expensive than the Pirelli ATRs. Local tyre place where I got a quote for the GO12s recommended the Maxxis AT700s for about $279 each but I think that was more because he could have sold them to me today.

Not sure where u are hearing the negative comments as on this forum their r heaps of good comments as a lot of people ran the passenger tyre in the early days and have now moved on the light truck version. We have 2 prado's in our little fleet one got 82k and other car which is mine got 69' out of our passenger set, neither set were really bald, I changed mine as I was doing a trip. We now have the light truck version and love them and find no real difference in ride comfort, I run them at 36 psi.

Answer to your question is Google search but like I said, you can find negative comments on any tyre. The Pirelli ATRs seem to have a lot of bad reviews (flat spots, can't get them to balance, cracked sidewalls) but that's from people in cold weather areas so wouldn't apply here.

Just got quotes for the 694LTs, best was $298 each fitted and balanced plus available now (or at least tomorrow). I think price, availability and your recommendation has changed my mind again
