  • Your thoughts on my AT3's (damaged?)

    Hey guys,

I had my car parked outside today with the wheels at full lock and noticed that the tread on my tyres had a few stones stuck in them... As you do, I went to pick the stones out and noticed a few curious things going on with the tread.

I'm no expert when it comes to 4x4 tyres but there appears to be some cracking/splitting of the tread happening. I've always looked after them by reducing pressures on the rough stuff.

    This is happening after 4500kms.

This shot is a bit out of focus but I picked a stone out of here and it had gone through into the rubber!

There's also some feathering of the tread too... I'm not sure whether this is because of the way I drive or pressures I'm running on the HWY (40PSI). The tread also appears "chalky" I guess is the best way to describe it.

I've had a great run out of these tyres up until now. They've been awesome on and off the road, well with my limited offroad experience they haven't got me stuck (except when I bellied it in the sand!).

Your comments would much appreciated... Do you think this is abnormal or ok? Or is it something I'm doing wrong!! haha

Oh and by the way this is happening on all the tyres.

    Cheers,

    Hi Crammy,
Ohhh Ahhhhh sorry to see that, watched my mates Coopers do the same thing on his Patrol when he was running back and forth regularly on the old cooktown road the tread blocks started to chip off badly a couple of weeks after but they were the crook Coopers that a fair bit has been written about.
His Patrol was fitted with a camber correction kit as you do with the Patrols to stop front tires scuffing and he looked after it.

There are a few tire experts on our site so stand by! I am sure they can give you some good advice.

Monday I would be chatting  with the your tyre dealer.

Yeah mate looks like it's on the cards now!! Probably in time for the next trip. I was going to keep these and get a second set of rims with some muddies, now I think if I can get a refund I'll slap some muddies straight on the Prado rims and if the noise is too much for the boss I'll get another set of A/T's and rims to bolt on when not getting dirty.

Speaking of which... I priced a second set yesterday and they're over $900 each for the GXL rims! Thats just rediculous, priced the copies and they're only $220.... Go figure.

The guy also said that the new 200 series cruisers are $1900 per rim!! I don't know if he was having me on but JAYZUZ! I think I would want to pull them off, pack them in cotton wool and store in the back shed some where and get a set of cheap copies!

Got quoted some various prices for muddies. MTR's were between $350-360 and the STT's are only sold at one place up here and they were about $370-380...

Not wanting to be blaze about tyre care and safety, but if I replaced a tyre every time a dealer recommended it (which they don't because there aren't any for 1000kms, (actually that's bit of a lie; I tested this theory last week in Alice and yes they replaced the tire)) then I'd be going through at least one per week.

30,000kms ago, after lunching (in theory) two tyres within 200kms, I made a decision to keep them until they would no longer hold air. I've gotten thousands of extra kms by putting patches behind the most horrendous sidewall splits!! Now some tyres have finally let go and I am progressing over to GTs as the old BFGs all make their way to the perpetual Warburton tyre fire.

My point is (and again I don't want to undermine tyre safety), that the textbook safe tyre is a perfect tyre and in reality you can get away with a hell of a mess before it becomes dangerous - particularly with tubeless and particularly with a car that handles quite well on a flat tyre eg a Prado.

              wildmangordo,

Thanks for the reply. I realise the tryes aren't going to blowout or turn into a big pile of rubber mush, but being new tyres I'd hate to see them split to bits in another 10,000kms especially after paying good dollars for them. With a cape trip coming up I'm feeling pretty nervous about taking them up there now and at this stage I wont be taking them up there.

So for anyone thinking about buying these tyres make up your own mind from the pics. They're a great tyre in all conditions but the splitting is a bit disapointing and not sure where it will lead to in the future.

I dropped into the tyre dealer today and he did the old, you'll get that in any tyre line, which you may but I would have thought there would be more damage like a chip near the split or some tell tale sign that it's been under stress. I'm no expert so I'm probably not really qaulified to comment on the damage.

Anyway he's getting the rep to look at them in a few weeks when he comes up from brissie so stay tuned!

Just to let you know I swapped out my stockies with the AT3's and have clocked up a huge 300km's on them thus far. I'll let you know if the same thing happens to mine.

I am no expert but I believe just about any tyre will do this once it ages. I did 2 Cape trips on the same set of BFG's and the first trip they were perfect. The second trip, the tyres came home with more corrugations than the road.
These two trips were 2 years apart and I regularly had them balanced and checked tyre pressure religously. Also there was probably only an extra 15 000 km on them. They were new on the first trip.

Perhaps the tyres you purchased were either old stock (on sale) or spent too long in the heat and the tropical sun in FNQ before you got them as rubber will perish.

They were brand spankers plucker, shipped up from Brisbane and only just arrived off the boat.

Haven't had them back on the car yet so no change so far. Will be interesting to see how vf34's AT3's go.

Thanks for the reminder, I've forgotten all about them to tell you the truth, they're sitting up the back corner of the garage at the moment. I'll give them a call tomorrow, I'm pretty sure they'll say fair wear and tear as the salesman wasn't all that interested in the first place.

I still have the stock Granktrek's on my rig and just hit the 56k mark; they have at least another 7.5-10k wear on them. Tyres are rotated and balanced every 10k service. Must admit, I'm getting damn good wear out of these things considering the punishment.

I probably drive 80% road, 20% offroad. Offroad I've driven everywhere from sand (Bribie and Fraser), mud to rocks (including 12+ trips on the real sharp shale stuff over at Lake Eucumbene). I do have the odd chip here/there but none of the deep tread cuts and chunks of rubber cut out from embedded rocks that you have.
