2 blow outs in one day is pretty amazing. I thouht Saunders was pretty tame and something a lot of AWDs tend to do. I half suspect the driver might be at fault here.
True...but some say you can have bad luck. There were a few places with sharp rocks and although he had let his tyres down - he must have not missed it. BTW - Saunder's is quite tame - but its also a nice for those who want to have a go without being overly challenged. I took a bunch of folk out there who were pretty much beginners and just wanted to have a day out. It is a nice place to take the kids and friends to see our country side and some old mine shafts in the Adelaide hills. Coupled with a few nice wineries on the trip back home makes a decent day's outing.

      Re: TYRE MUSTER

At the risk of causing upset, I have heard too many stories of Cooper Tires sh*tting themselves - I do appreciate that there are more of them out there in the first place, so statistically there are bound to be more stories. Also, I understand that you tend only to hear about the crap stories and less of the good news ones.

Be that as it may, I personally wouldn't go for Cooper for my rig - this is just my personal preference and I don't mean to put anyone off.

Tires (oops, I mean tyres) are a bit like wives - very subjective and the one that someone likes may not necessarily appeal to others... and no I wasn't about to make any comparison about them going down on you... ops: ops:

Just to add mine to the list:

Daily/Touring: COOPER ATR 265/65R17 mounted on SPEEDY GRANDE ALLOYS with the same on the Camper. I am very happy with these as touring tires to date. When these are worn, most likely will go with 70 series ATR's or ST's

Play: COOPER STT 265/70R17 mounted on the FACTORY ALLOYS. These have only done a couple of hundred k's to date and I am very happy with their performance on and off the road.

        Cheers,
        Kevin

          Re: TYRE MUSTER

          Hi all,
After owning/using many different brands of tyres over the years, I've settled on Cooper ST's for my '08 GXL.
Running on stock alloys, they've taken me through the Pilbara (several times), along the beach south of Dawesville, through the forrests around the SW cape and pretty much everywhere in between.
Never had even the thought of a puncture in over 30,000k's so far. I run about 50psi on the highway (when I've got a load in the back), 35 on the Pilbara dirt and down to about 15-20 on the beach.
Steering response is on the black top, as stated here already, not 100% beautiful but I've gotten so used to them now that any other tyre throws me right out for a little while.

I don't think I'd ever go for another tyre, unless STT/STC's for a bit of fun!!
2008 GXL, V6 Manual, Cooper ST's, Lightforce 240 HID, Uniden UHF, Navman, Lifestyle Rack, 40Lt Engel, more and more to come

                Re: TYRE MUSTER

Samo: I see you're a fellow 2003 GX owner. How do you find the fit of the Coopers (presumably 265/65x17) without flares? Looks like there's a (relatively modest) bit of rubber showing. I'm looking at changing to 7.5 rims & 265/65 profile tyres from the standard "skinnys" and as I tow a camper trailer don't want to pepper it with rocks (um, or other motorists for that matter ).

                Cheers,

                  Re: TYRE MUSTER

they have only been on for a month now but im really happy with them, they do stick out a wee bit, i might have to get some flares eventually, as for the fit its like a finger in a bum, they handle really well on the black and in the sand they r great as well, havent had a chance to get them in the mud but they will come soon, they dont rub on the rear at all, even on full flex, but in the front its touches the inner guard on full lock bit a bit of a trim fixed that up, over all happy camper and yeah if only they made em in 65 series  cheers samo

Samo, so they're 70s? Assumed they were 65s (thought I could make out "65" in the photo). Glad to hear you're happy with them.

Every "review" I come across about Cooper ST's says they are a little noisy on the blacktop and suffer a bit from chipping. Reading through this thread I note that most people are happy with them though. Would I notice much of a difference in road noise over the Dunlop Grandtreks?? How about over a set of BFG ATR's?

Slowly narrowing the choices down. Looks like Cooper ST or BFG ATR's. The only thing that puts me off with the Cooper's is the chipping issue.......

Added fuel consumption... the hell with it... you only live once.....

Just had my Grand treks replaced today with BFG A/T .265/65/r17
                            62,000 on the clock.
I have to say they did well for my application. Most of my 4wding is on the beach, so no real demands placed on the tyres.
I was laughed at when i turned up to cityviews 4wd park with those shoes on. In the end the tyres weren't the problem, its was the clearance.
After all the reviews I decided the BFG would suit me. I have to say they make the car look more of a 4wd.

I have had 3 sets of Cooper ST,s 2 on my previous truck, got over 65,000ks, now have em on my D4D, 265/70/17 Great tyre on & off the road, do get a little noisey as they wear, but no real probs, my first set did chip a bit but we we climbing Trig Track near Walhala, Victorian High Country, Steep rocky & slippery in the wet. would not hesitate to re-fit ST,s again Top all round tyre.

Upgraded from Cooper ATR's to a set of ST's this week. Got approx 60k out of the ATR's, probably could have squeezed another 5k.
Very happy with the look and performance of the ST's
