Hi sweet pea, aerial wire goes along track along edge of roof and comes out the side of the front factory rail bracket on the roof. You don't install in the roof. aerial bRacket on inside of factory rail bracket that is bolted to the roof. Sorry I don't have pictures. Wire comes from under bonnet up along corner of windscreen. This then goes under the brushed metal that runs up to the roof. They showed me how a small connecting wire is used to connect to another aerial bracket on a Pioneer platform. That way you can have the aerial with or without the platform.

I like this idea too because you don't have the aerial obstructing your view at the front. Aerial similar to what you have referenced, just short flexible stub. Mounted on bracket connected to OEM roof rail bracket on roof.
2012 Crystal Pearl Prado Altitude 150 Diesel Auto. Toyota mats and rear rubber mat. Toyo Open Country AT2's 265 65 R17 LT. OEM nudge bar. dual battery set up with Optima D34, rear power points front and rear Anderson plugs. Lightforce LED combi light bar. Kingsley side steps. Outback Ideas recovery points. Dr Air Pro 150 ltr air compressor. ARB 60 ltr fridge. GME 3550s UHF radio. Hema HX1.

Wont that get in the way of stuff you put on the roof?
When we go camping i normally have at least a gazebo and rolled queen mattes on the roof, more depending on how long we are staying or where we are going.

I mount my aerial on the awning on a knockdown bracket. Doesn't get in the way of anything.

          Hi Pete,

If it is 150mm long it is a quarter wave antenna and if it is mounted on the rail rather than in the roof it will not use the roof as a groundplane. Without a proper groundplane I think it will work better with a ground independent antenna.

I had a half wave ground independent antenna mounted on the roof rail. It was twice as long but still only 300 mm but it hit the warning height monitor on the entrance to every carpark I went into.

I eventually settle for an elevated feed ground independent antenna mounted on the left front guard with a Z bracket. I use a 1/4 wave whip around town which doesn't hit carparks and a gain whip in the bush. Testing shows it is almost symmetrical front and back.

Neither mounting points suffer from the destructive vibration of a bull bar mount.

Hi sweet pea, thanks for the info. I like what you have suggested. Not sure about what you have described. I've seen some that have the bracket fitted in the gap between the bonnet and the guard. Is this what you mean?

Do you have a photo and can you recommend the make/type of antennae specifically?

I have an Oem nudge bar with light bar fitted and don't want to install pole antennae on it.

i got a remote unit and mounted the jack in one of the button blanks on the dash...took all of new years day to hollow out the blank nice and neatly so it looks like a factory plug...good thing as i wasnt capable of doing much more on that day...

                Hi Sweetpea,
I am still looking for the best way to fix a CB aerial as I don't wish to install at this stage a bullbar. On my previous car - a T31 Xtrail I put it on the bonnet as their was plenty of panel gap between the bonnet and front fender. It worked very well for 5 years. I then intended to do the same with my Prado 150 update but came to the conclusion as the panel gap is very small between the bonnet and front fender it wasn't possible particularly after seeing a Prado that had the paint taken off by doing this and rust was forming.
Do you mean your aerial is on your bonnet like above or on your front fender just above your tyre?
What brand of bracket have you used?

                thanks
                David

I used a GME mounting bracket and it fits between the bonnet and the guard without any problems.

                  https://www.gme.net.au/catalogue/ant...e/mb404ss.aspx

It was easy to get the coax thru the firewall.

                  S.

                  ps

The antenna is a ground independent elevated feed that came with the Uniden CB from Autoelec.

It has been mounted there for 3 or 4 years with no problems and does not seem to annoy any of the passengers.

                    Hi Sweatpea,
                    Thanks for your reply.

I assume the bracket is fixed by screws into the guard.

Most of the aerial cables are 5mm or so that I have noticed which seem too thick for the panel gap between the bonnet and fender. If this is the case did you have the bracket up close to the windscreen so the cable goes into the engine bay from the windscreen side?

I have read that it is not good for reception to have the aerial close to the roof pillars. How far away is your bracket located?

                    thanks
                    David

Mine is on the transmission tunnel by my left leg. It's one of the smaller digital units though so it isn't in the way. Easy to hear and adjust from there.
