  • ARB Recovery Points

Am I missing something? Is there any quality or feature reason why the ARB recovery points are nearly double the price other options like Roadsafe?

Looking at fitting to my 150 with ARB Deluxe bar...

I am not shy on spending for a reason, but I can't see what that might be in this case!

    Hi Mate,

Ive had a ARB summit sahara bar fitted recently with 2 recovery points.
    the differences i noticed are.
    - ARB points are rated to 8t each and are rated for angled pulls parallel to the max wheel angle at full lock
    - Road safe are rated to 3.25t each not sure about angled pulls
    - TJM points that were included with their bar are rated to 8t for pair only for straight pulls
    - ARB points are thicker than the others around 20mm plate compared to around 10mm on the others.

I only got them installed as i used TJMs price to say that they include recovery points with their bull bar, so they were able to do a price that was close to TJMs on the bar and 2 recovery points and i preferred the Sahara bar.
If i had to pay full price for the points and the bar i would not have gone with them as i always where possible try to use a equalizer strap for recoveries and try to keep it as straight as possible.

I doubt that most people will get the extra benefit from the ARB recovery points.

I went for a 4WD training last week. The trainer said that Prado and Hilux doesn't even need a recovery point. He then intentionally got a Hilux bogged and performed a recovery with the tow bar pin and existing point.

The message is that if you are not going search of places to get bogged, then you don't need it.

His 4WD has recovery points as the car manufacturer uses them for training and they require him to have recovery points.

IMO that is rubbish, yes you can be recovered BACKWARDS using your hitch pin but obviously not forwards. Much better to have recovery points fitted and never need them than not have them and damaging something trying to recover your Prado when bogged or stuck.
          Cheap insurance really.

Tow bar pin is fine for a rear recovery but using a factory point for a front snatch is risky, assuming that's what they suggested. I've done similar courses where they strongly recommended not to use them for recoveries. They call them a "tie down point" in the manual that comes with the car and recommend only using them with a bridle strap. Rated recovery points are much safer, especially if you'll be doing big pulls, angled pulls, pulling without a bridle etc.

Nice. I have the same bar, and was thinking I'll be needing to cut the side plates to fit, but looks like the recovery points fit around it...
                    Thanks for pics...

Yep, they fit like a glove, you just have to be careful with which chassis holes you use, it's easy to get tricked but if you follow the pics you won't have any probs. It was almost too easy.

I went to install these the other night when I had an hour free, but when I loosened the top bolt, it rattled loosely like it would fall into the chassis once the bolt was out? Is the top nut captive enough to stay there whilst I take bolt out, fit rec pt and then put bolt back in..
I didn’t want to remove the bolt completely and have the nut fall into chassis meaning I have to remove bull bar to be able to get into chassis to bolt it in again?
especually when I needed to have the car mobile again a few hours later..

No, the top nut is not captive (the bottom is captive and attached to the chassis).

On my ARB bullbar, the top nut was attached to a long metal bar as shown in the first photo below. It drops into the chassis when you undo it.

I used a magnetic pick up tool purchased on Ebay (see link) to pick up the metal bar after it fell into the chassis. I then brought it up to the hole in the chassis (see Photo 2) and grabbed it with a pair of needle nose pliers.

I couldn't get the nut-end out of the hole (couldn't get enough twist) so I used a 2nd pair of needle-nose pliers to slowly feed the metal bar up the chassis (towards the back of the car as per the 2nd photo yellow arrow) until the other end of the bar (without the nut) was at the hole in the chassis. I was then able to leverage the smaller end out of the chassis and pull the rod out. (My photo illustrates how far back you need to feed the bar - of course, in practice, the bar is INSIDE the chassis rail when you're trying this!)

Definitely get the magnetic pick-up tool and two pairs of pliers first - it was reasonably easy once I worked out how to do the first one - about 30 minutes per side to fit each recovery point.
