  • Can the "real" Outback Ideas recovery points step forward then ? The ones you linked look exactly like the "Outback Ideas" recovery points fitted by ARB to Richo's wagon, but very different to the ones on Giles' Photo above.
I am glad this is straight forward and not confusing

Edit: the ones Giles have are for a 120 .... oops

Still the Ebay Seller at the end of that link is selling a lot of things labelled "Outback Ideas". I would like to think he couldn't do that unless they were. Complaints would shut down the seller real fast .....

    cheers

My points are the real Outback Ideas rated points, I waited almost 12 months but when you see the result it waqs well worth it. As said before any good 4WD shop will be able to get these. I hope I don't have to use them . Have a look at the 2011GTG thread at the last recce for some views of the fun we had and not one recovery required.

      Regards, Richo.

      • You have a point Damien. Richo on page 8 of this thread stated that outback ideas recovery points are rated and stamped. The bay link states that they aren't rated, which leads me to believe that they aren't genuine.

Edit: due to recent emails to the reseller fnb4wd, it appears i have been mis-informed. The genuine outback ideas recovery points are not rated. I was lead to believe by others that it was.

        • Buyer beware, if you are using recovery points then you are in a situation where the extra $50.00 may be the difference between a satisfactory outcome, or some serious damage and still being stuck.

            • Thought I read something recently that some companies didn't stamp their points so as avoid legal issues if there ever was an incident, but as you say if Richo already has OI ones that are stamped, then the Ebay ones require further investigation.
Might flick him an ebay question about his points.

              cheers

Recovery points are much like maxtrax. They cost next to nothing to make but suckers like you and I will pay 10x the price it costs them to make. Haha

Interesting. Most points ive seen at a 4x4 shop have stamps on their recovery points. Don't see why they shouldn't be stamped if they were tested to destruction with the proper safety margin accounted for.

Do let us know what the sellers response is.

                  Cheers

BTW which points do I go for with a factory fitted toyota alloy bar ? Still go the 150 one with the notch in it or does the 120 fit OK ? I think some people have got the 120 ones to fit with "some adjustment" - how much "adjustment" was required ?

                    cheers

                    • I wouldn't set about adjusting (drilling?) any part of the recovery point. Would mess around with the integrity of the point. Don't take risks at the expense of safety. Thats just my opinion though. May I ask why you would want 120 recovery points when 150 ones are available?

                      Cheers

                      • I was looking at it from the point of view that the 150 points I have seen, seem to be designed around fitting an ARB or TJM bar. I have the toyota bar and if the 120 points fit Ok then I don't need the 150 points .... especially if I can't get them locally, and there would be more of a chance of getting the 120 points locally
As for "adjusting" the recovery point or mounting point, I wouldn't dream of risking safety ..... I just wanted to find out what someone had done to get them to fit and then have a look at the safety side of things.

                        cheers

                        • Just got a reply from Chris at FNB4WD :

Damien, yes I have read the notes in PradoPoint about the question of if they are genuine or not. In fact another reseller got on there and stated ours weren't genuine because they are not rated. He may be opening himself up to litigation by stating clearly incorrect advice. Our points are in fact genuine Outback Ideas points, and John who makes them has made it very clear about the fact they are not rated. The difference between us and other resellers is we are honest with potential buyers. I defy anyone who can pick up an Outback Ideas unit and show a stamped rating anywhere on the item. Its simply not there.
So in summary, yes they are genuine points, you can tell the PradoPoint community they are genuine, and they can still be confident it is a very high quality product that is very strong. I am aware of some knock-offs on the market, some painted yellow and even some knock-offs sold by another Adelaide 4WD store, but ours are genuine and are made by Outback Ideas.
We would rather be honest with our customers.
                          Cheers
                          Chris

                          Sounds good enough to me.

                          cheers

                          • Good to see that someone can quite happily say quite negative things about a product without any solid facts to back them up and when some information is provided that suggests that they may be wrong, just "forget" to post a correction or an apology.
Has me seriously re-thinking the whole idea of subscribing to these or any forums for "quality" information.
Everyone has an opinion I know, but sometimes people get too carried away because they think are protected by defaming someone or their business in an online forum.
Well think again and please contemplate what you are posting before hitting the send button.

                                Hi William,

When I bought the Outback Ideas recovery points for the 150 series from TJM (they were ordered in for me) & had a look at them I realized that they were set up for a vehicle that had a ARB bar fitted. I have a TJM bar & they could not go on as they were.
I went to TJM & they rang Outback Ideas & I spoke with John who makes them & he told me to measure & drill to suit my vehicle with the TJM bar. The new bolt hole is foward of the existing rear hole so I don't see how that would Would mess around with the integrity of the points.

                                Cheers
