Tailshaft Clunk

Hello All

Just picked up my 2010 GXL Petrol today with 60k on the clock and it is really immaculate and a credit to the previous owner. And wow, doesn't that Prado Clunk get old really fast. It has just had the 60k service so they obviously didn't do the whole grease thing. I will be sorting that out tomorrow. I didn't really notice it when I test drove it, but now I own it, I wait for it every time I stop. It sometimes doesn't do it when I stop, but as soon as I take off, there it goes, the clunk. My wife will give me some if it doesn't get fixed. Also found it really has a lot of rear end clunk/bangs and the like in the body. I am coming from a KX-S Kluger which is a revised (cheaper RX350 Lexus) so there will be a time for adjustment. But I love the car, it just has something about it. Especially the fact that it can tow my bike trailer on dirt up a hill. Looking forward to lots of trips away in the car and being a member of this great forum.

Toyota greased our one up sooo much there is bloody grease everywhere even drops on my clean driveway what the hell just replace the dam thing.

Better change your user name happys 150, you certainly dont sound happy lol......Pain in the arse when grease gets on your driveway, hopefully you have a sealant over it ?? makes it a lot easier to wipe clean.......Cheers Steve

yep, and the underside of the car is splattered with grease from the tail shaft grease flung everywhere once they overgrease it ! Then it becomes a sandtrap next trip to the beach.....RECALL the tail shaft Mr Toyota! Won't happen I guess, as its not a "safety issue"...

The tailshaft knock on my 3door ZR plays up every few months. Previously Toyota removed the tailshaft, cleaned slip joints and re-greased. Worked for less than 1,000kms, and back in again because it wasn't packed properly. I asked for a new tailshalt last week when it got serviced, and they said its not covered under warranty. I'm sure this will need to get replaced soon, probably when its just out of warranty.

Recently had my work Hilux serviced at Scarborough Toyota in WA, and they re-greased the shaft, but it lasted less than 500kms before I was back in. Then when they removed the tailshaft, it was that far out of alignment (obviously didn't road test) because the vibration was that bad I couldn't drive it back to work. This has never happened previously, so either Toyota aren't training their apprentice mechanics properly, or most dealers don't give a fruck about customer service as long as they sell cars.

PS: Apologies for my excessive ranting, I still like my Prado I'm just a little bit pissed off

And you have every write to be, you pay good $$$ for some thing you expect quality. Keep pestering them, stuff em, their quick enough to remove the cheque from your hands when buying it..........Cheers Steve

I am a happy person normally but when I spend so much of my hard earned money on a apparent quality vehicle, then I get clunks and rattles. Then to put a band aid on (and what a bloody mess of a band aid) instead of repairing the problem. That gets me going !!

LOL yeah and a very fair comment (I spend so much of my hard earned money on a apparent quality vehicle, then I get clunks and rattles.) Pisses me off to, I'm not overly patient but when I hand over my hard earned $$$ I expect to get quality. I think customer service these days is slowly dying in the arse. I get quit sarcastic if I know Im been treated like a fool or they just dont give shit. Even last night I got the little one some Macca's (she only has it once a week after swimming lessons) and the look and roll of the eyes I got because I asked for the junior burger without onions or mustard you thought I was about to kill some one, I asked her was there an issue with what I ordered ?? she said no. I do know some customers can be painfull and some you want to kick up the arse and tell to piss off but in general I think most customers are fine and deserve what there paying for. I have sat with my feet up on the new cars sales managers desk over at Holden at Liverpool when we bought our VX S Pack commodore new as they gave me some dodgy copy HSV wheels in stead of the genuine (which we paid extra for) and they scrubbed on the guards, I sat there for 3 hours whistling in his ear untill he ordered the ones in I asked for, told him I was going to whistle in his ear all day and they will be locking the doors with me still here before I go anywhere unless they ordered the wheels in. My wife refuses to come any where with me when it involves warranty or there is an issue, first or second time round Im ok but if it starts getting to the third time or there trying to play me then they cop it...........Unfortunately some times you need to be a bit firm. I always start off quit and talk nicely dont raise the voice etc as I think in most cases this gets you further. I talk the same way I expect to get spoken to, if your instant ass hole and smart arse then I let loose, like holden did............Cheers Steve

Had my tail shaft replaced today. Has made a big difference no clunk at all and at only 11,000 km the vehicle should still feel like new.

I took mine in for a service under 10k but am off for work for over 4 months in 2 weeks... had a few issues one of which was a clunking sound from the tail shaft... they said they would look at it for me, I was pleasantly surprised when the service guy rang back at the time he stated and told me that they had looked into the noise and that they will be replacing the tail shaft, only problem it wont be until tomorrow till one gets here...

No issue there and I said keep the car i got a spare and a bike.. so all good... I half expected to have issues but was happy to be surprised otherwise...

just had 10000km service done, mentioned that it clunks occasionally, typically when stopping at traffic light waiting for it to change. They pulled shaft out and greased it, now its nice and quiet again.

127,000 k's of 120 prado and doing that now, shit load of grease helps sooth the ears if its annoying... cheers butane
