    Bernie,
I've got the same clunk - mine stared around 7000 k's. Keeping the pressure on the service manager and they'll replace it. I got the call last week that my new tail shaft has arrived and I just need to get organised and get it fitted.
    Cheers, Soz.

Its a completely new shaft, after the hassle of replacing the one with the problem (clunk) you would think they have tested it.

No vibration issues with my new shaft.... nor clunk.

If they don't remove the shaft and clean the factory grease off first then they will not fix the problem. They use a different grease than that from the factory which seems to work better (last longer between needing more).

Re balance, my only concern was whether the original shaft was balanced on the car or not, if not then agreed there would not be a problem.

As for my 'clunk' it has been quiet now for 10k so maybe it is 'wearing' in.

Haven't had a chance to speak to them yet, but we'll see what sort of response I get. At least I can relate some of the responses other dealers have given, so they should at least listen.
          Kev

I had my 120 in for a 50k service. I identified the clunk at 40k and they packed it up with grease (standard response). The problem was better but not "fixed". They again packed it with 30 pumps of grease today on the 50k service. Given I do a bit of offroad they suggested I repack at every 5k at their cost (just drop it in) I think I will do each second 5k fill myself with Hi temp grease as suggested. I will write to Toyota and get the recommended grease though. CMI Toyota in Adelaide will do it at each service for free I believe as the problem was identified under warranty. Watch this space I guess. PS, not complaining, they generally do a good job.

Agree with Roos comments. At my latest service I told Toyota that the tailshaft had developed clunk again and they volunteered to put in new one, didn't even have to ask.

I think I had this problem just after new...the first few times I thought the car behind had bumped into me...or that the gearbox was chinging down to 1st a while after stopping and bumping into gear.
Is this the same problem you guys are experiencing?
Toyota Service said it was propellor shaft needing grease. Since then the problem seems to have gone - 40,000ks since.
Has anyopne else had the problem dissapear without shaft replacement?

Unfortunately I would be very loathe indeed to guarantee anything as being correct from a dealership, honestly, and I am only being truthful and not derogatory or anything like that, but NEVER believe at face value anything you are told at a dealership unless you check it out first...it shouldn't be like that, but I am sure many others will agree, ask by all means, but then check with a trusted mechanic or somewhere else just to be sure.

True Brogers, when I bought mine from the dealer he siad I drove a hard bargain and was getting it for less then they payed for it, told him get real, as if your going to sell me a car for less then you traded it !!! He said, well extremely close, I said you reckon, I have spoken to original owner and your making 5g out of me that was after screwing him down as it was, and said to him, just so you know that I did speak to the original owner the blokes name is such n such and he lives at Emu plains and bought a new grey kluger, making no money my arse. He just handed me the paper work and I walked out, only thing I returned it for was brake shudder, which is a good thing.........Cheers Steve

Have to agree with Comments above with respect to sales, had poor experience when buying our new Prado 150. (Neighbour was the same (also Prado 150))
On the other hand, my after sales experience with Toyota has been fantastic. I deal with Cranbourne Toyota for service (Did not purchase the car from them, however wish I did).
I get both my Corolla and Prado serviced with them and the service has been great.

With respect to Tail Shaft Knocking, I have it booked back in for more work as the first time they only had it for an hour. They explained what they were going to do (full re-grease)(remove and replace) and I am happy with that. As long as my dealer is keeping me informed and not feeding me crap I am happy.

                        Bernie.

Usually it returns after a while as the grease works out of the joint.

Just had this looked at during the 40k service and the dealer just greased it again, although they have noted the issue and said to bring it back if it happens again, I have found that it generally happens in the last 4k between services, so will make a point of getting some grease and running the grease gun over the shaft when I do the inter service oil change.

Kev, what Riv said. I had my shaft replaced today at the 40K service. As soon as it clunks again go back and see them as will take some time to get the new shaft from Japan. No whinge - no get.
                                Cheers,
