  • Yes, I got told by mine that replacing the shaft doesn't fix the problem so they just regrease. I haven't done enough K's since they regreased it last to know if it will return, next service (last Toyota capped one) is due in Feb, not sure what I should do then.

    • As I stated previously in this thread the new shaft apparently costs a lot (so my dealer told me) thus the dealers have obviously been told by good old Toyota Aus to limit the number they install. What I don't understand is that some dealers have no issues and do it straight away where others........

Good on you BIGW for persisting.

      • I too have finally got a new shaft being fitted on Tuesday. After taking it back four times and complaining at the 20k and 30k services, the head mechanic made the call over-riding the service manager. Originally I got the same crap BIGW got, "we only grease it as per the service manual" and " we've not replaced one since the early 120 models". I'm so thankful for this forum and the info here making me stick to my guns and get the result anyone spending so much money should be entitled to.
This will now be my third warranty claim and I'm hoping the last. Despite this, I still love my 150 and the areas it opens up to me and the kids.

        Cheers,
        Dusty

        • Have mine booked in for service on Wednesday. When I spoke to the service manager about the clunk he said they had replaced shafts on 200 series before, not on Prado's but he would "look into it". Hopefully they will organise to replace it.

I got a similar bull excuse, although my dealer said they only ever replaced shafts on the 120 Prado's. Well one day after having mine replaced it feels like a different vehicle completely. Before it was just the thump after stopping or on initial take off that I noticed. Now it seams smoother accelerating, stopping and starting off. Better feel driving all round. I just hope that's the end of that drama!

            Cheers,

I've had the thump on initial takeoff too, never associated that with the after stopping clunk. Mine has to go in for it's last factory warranty service soon so what should I say when booking it in?

Tell them that you want the shaft replaced as it's the same problem (tail shaft clunk). It occurs when you take your foot off the brake. The splines bind in the slip joint and when you take your foot off the brake the pressure being exerted on the splines is released and the shaft moves in the slip joint suddenly causing the clunk.

                • Well it seems I got greased
Went in today to pay and pick up my key ( organised vehicle to be picked up and returned as I was away for work), and spoke to the S.M. again to find out what was done.
He told me they had greased it and he had personally test driven it and considered it to be ok, but also said that this was probably a temporary fix and to contact him when the problem returned and he would organise a replacement.
Seems like a decent guy as he was more than happy to hook up the computer and reprogram the aircon not to automatically go to re-circ after I showed him in the handbook that they could do it, while doing that he also got rid of the seatbelt warning buzzer, turned the beeps for the lock/unlock down and programmed the windows to be operated up and down by the remote.
Funniest thing was 5 minutes after leaving I received a "courtesy call" about my experience getting my vehicle serviced yesterday, girl on phone got a little confused when I said " wasn't there yesterday but S.M. had been very helpful today".

I'm sure its not hard Matt, I had mine done also at the second service.

Probably a 5 min job and shouldn't cost you anything for this.

                      Cheers,

                      • I've just hit the 3000k mark and mine has started doing this aswell. Does it when I stop slowly and also when change from reverse into drive and start to take off.

As Jeff said not hard at all, just be aware that they are two separate commands that need changing, one for up another for down, and they can also program it to be done with the key in the lock

Get onto your dealer brock, it wont go away until you change the tail shaft...

                            • Booked mine in for a service today and got the re-grease spin again. This will be the last factory warranty service too so I'm not liking my chances of a replacement.

                              • Hi all,

Ive read through most of this topic and can see many of you are auto owners. Just wanted to know has this dreaded 'clunk' happened to any manual diesel owners? And if so did they replace the shaft also? Ive got a Sept 2012 built GXL manual 4000kms and wondering if I should expect something to happen soon

                                Cheers,

                                Ken
