  • At approx $1800 the extended 3yr warranty (actually warranty insurance backed by Toyota) is well worth it IMO

    • I've just been reading up, exploring the overgreasing theory (which I don't really buy cos I can't see the stuff getting where it is supposed to go unless you squirt it all the way in there).

I found this thread http://forum.ih8mud.com/100-series-c...ive-shaft.html from the US. I don't know if the connection has been made in this (Pradopoint) thread, but the cause is described in the US thread as being associated with the constant driving force of automatic transmission binding the shaft at its longer extension until you accelerate off, releasing the tension.

So my question is... anyone with a manual have this problem? Not that being auto is the cause, just that manuals may be less likely to display the symptom.

Now you just have to put plenty of roads with that problem... behind you

I haven't done my own servicing (yet) but my new Prado started doing it at about 6000-7000km and it's seen only about 100-200km of dirt and one water crossing about 25cm deep so far! Even if the dealers don't grease them properly during service, surely one would expect the factory does?

Mine goes in for the 10,000km service next week and they've already told me they're only going to grease it. When I raised the issue when booking my service, initially they told me "we used to replace them but now we just grease them", but when I pushed them (based on the knowledge from this thread) they did acknowledge the existence of the replacement tail shaft of a modified design. I asked if they would replace it if it reoccurred after this service and they said something along the lines of "that's a road we could possibly look at going down". No real commitment though.

Well, I picked mine up from the dealer last Friday after they greased it at the 10,000km service and I had not driven 500m down the road when I pulled up at the lights and.... "Clunk". Not impressed to say the least! Pulled over & called the dealer right away. Followed it up with a firm but polite email earlier this week (stating that clearly the regrease solution wasn't satisfactory etc.) & today they replied asking me to arrange a date to bring the vehicle in for the shaft to be replaced. So fingers crossed that a fix is not far away. Out of interest (not that my dealer has said they will do this) but has anyone known of any cases where the dealer has attempted to resolve the clunk by replacing with a new shaft of the same design rather than the redesigned uber expensive unit?

          David.

          • Interesting. My dealer told me last week at the 10000klm service there is only one tailshaft available and suggested I check with spare parts to verify. I didn't at the time ( I was raising a head of steam about him telling me my 1400/1500rpm vibration was normal) but I will check the part numbers with a different dealership this week. Might even get a different dealership to test drive to hear/feel the vibration at 1500rpm. Anyone know a decent Toyota Dealer in Melbourne eastern suburbs? Oh what a feeeling!

            • Well, I decided to mention the tail shaft clunk today to my Toyota dealer at my 60,000 km service. I was politely told its not the tail shaft at all but the auto gearbox dropping back to first gear when sitting at the lights at a stop............WTF !!!!

So, I have left it and walked away at this stage and have had it added on to my service record printout at their end and will wait and see. I'm still scratching my head at that one ! Unbelievable

Don't take a crap fob off like that. Go to another dealer or print off this thread and politely place it under their nose.

                    • Good day Gentlemen,

And especially for wayne (hulbyw). try Nunawading. they are a good bunch. very helpful. although they had tried re-greasing for a couple of times but when the clunk continued, decided to fix it by replacement. that was recent and thankfully within the warranty, clunk gone. let's see after a few more clicks. had a look under and this is the part number on the new shaft. P3-16-10-10 T037110-60C10. - same number on the service tax invoice. hope this helps. can those who had theirs replaced confirm the same part number? just making sure it's not refurbished or polished or whatever... these things are expensive to manufacture- materials and precise cutting, hardening, tempering and coating process wise. little wonder Toyoda doesn't come to the party early. call your dealer and had them ordered in time for your booking. cheers.

Figured as much but does it actually specify that the tailshaft should be replaced?

The 2nd time I had mine greased they said "Oh we used to replace them but the problem comes back so now we just grease them up". Since that last re-grease I do still get a clunk but I feel it through the brake pedal AFTER I stop. Is that tailshaft clunk or something else?

                          • Fido, that is BS, the rplacement fixes the problem and is the only thing that does.......I just can't understand some of these dealers attitudes. Wake Up Toyota Aus and fix your and your dealers (not all but a lot of them) attitude towards custoemr service!

Can't say I remember feeling it in the brake pedal after I stopped although I haven't felt it for so long I can't really remember. It usually happens on brake release, however I do remember that after greasing it sometimes did change the characteristics of the clunk as it began to return.

I would continue pushing for a replacement so that you know that what you are feeling now is not the clunk.

I've done about 30,000kms since my tail shaft was replaced and the problem has not returned...

                              • So I ask my dealer on Friday to have a look at my Clunk while they do the 20k service and get told they have greased it and checked it over.

Comment at bottom of job card reads

"Inspected clunk on take off, vehicle has aftermarket spring and shocks, tailshaft was dry greased well and roadtested could not fault clunk"

I don't see the relationship between suspension and tailshaft binding, it may as well have said vehicle has aftermarket trailer plug installed. WTF
I guess this means no new shaft for me.

                                Cheers, mmm beer.
