  • Two months ago during oil change ask for regrease tailshaft (no clunks at that time) just preventive care, they had the grease gun broken so didnt do the job. Five days ago, after a 1500km trip, started a really slight clunk when stoping or slow brake release, never felt before but after reading all this posts, went straight to another shop for regrease shafts, almost inmediatly the clunk is gone, I hope this last until the next service, planning to regrease strictly next time. Seemed more the two shafts binding than play between them.

    • Hey Guys, I don't know the plan by toyota to fix this. However I have had some experience with uni's and shaft spines flogging out. Was working in the mining on the C510 Kenworth Road trains. These were towing the 160 ton mark in a Dual power configuration (one of the trailers with another engine and auto trans). We had issues with loosing the uni joints and with some awesome results. The results to that was the greasing of the Uni on every 12 hr shift. The grease is the Morleys, Bigfoot grease. Orange and sticks like the old mate to a blanket. Its extreme pressure grease and does the job in that application and may be the go. Also the PTO splines from the transmission to the Hydraulic pumps I have had Fretting. There is different reasons for the fretting but in this case the Morleys again on the splined slip joint. You are looking at the physical barrier as well as the anti corrosion which will reduce accelerated wear.
Check the uni for movement before greasing. When you grease the uni you purge the joint till you have a clean grease from each cap. If you really have no life or love reading info, look up fretting. still not good in the low KM on the girls.

      • Thanks kaindog. My tailshaft has a pretty good clunk at the moment. I have a mate who is a Toyota tech and he has told me the process to grease the shaft so I gonna give I a try with some Penrite extreme pressure grease. If that does not fix it I will try the Morleys stuff.

        • Driveline clunk?

I'm in the market for a used (2009 - 2012) petrol, manual transmission GXL 150 series and I'm surprised to see the amount of comments regarding driveline clunking/shunting, with some people even having their entire propshaft replaced. At the very least people are continually topping it up with grease.

Can any of you give me insight into just how common it really is? The one I buy will be out of warranty so it wouldn't be nice to have to replace a propshaft with my own money.

          Thanks

          • I think its common. Mine doesn't have it, but the dealer puts copious quantities of grease in it every service anyway.

            • Pretty rare for it not to happen. I found greasing the shaft wasn't any good as it came back to quick and the dealer was over greasing (what a mess that makes underneath) so they changed the shaft out for a modified version. All good now. I would think that given this is "known" issue that you could at least get the part for free outside of warranty, you might just have to cover labour depending on how hard you push.

Not an issue with the manuals. The auto keeps the load on the shaft when stopping. The manuals don't. It's when you release the brake the shaft slip joint is allowed to move thus the clunk.
Mine was replaced at 40000 and took less than 20000 to start again. Now 220000 and still clunks. Unless you are prepared to replace the slip joint with a aftermarket one grease the shaft on a regular basis.

                    • Rusty, bad luck by the sounds of it. Mine was replaced at around 12k and still perfect at 81k.

                      • Took my Prado in for Service, mentioned the clunk, they said they know about it, and its a common thing, they are waiting for a recall to be issued but the numbers havn't been high enough for an official recall. They said they the dealership is happy to sort it out at their end though. I think for now they are going to re grease it, but its good to know they are aware and will replace at their cost if need be.

                        • An update from my last post, when I picked up my prado I talked to different service person, and they said its all good and that the wrong grease had been used previously.

And now from my most recent service they said there was no grease on my tail shaft.
So that got greased up and its nice and smooth again. ........for now.

                            • So is this an issue with the facelift 150s too? I get a clunk in the rear every time I nowstart or stop, also when the car goes diagonally across a driveway ramp/curb. I took it to a suspension expert the other day and they had a look and made confirmed everything was tight. They aren't Toyota experts though so I suspect this is the issue. Kinda annoying that this is happening at 16,000kms. Though I noted I was hearing it when going fwd/reverse and vice versa about 1500km ago. Ergh.
