  • Rattle in D (Auto) on low idle - diesel engine

Wonder if anyone else has had this happen to their 150 series diesel. Have noticed in the last week a squeaky rattle noise when at a stop in Drive and the revs drop to 700rpm. I've checked for any loose components underneath but think the problem may lie inside the gearbox or brakes. This noise has not been there before and I've not gone 4WDing or done anything different in the last two months (much to my disappointment!).
The noise does not happen when:
    1. Park is selected (even at low revs)
    2. Neutral or Reverse selected
    3. Drive when slowly moving forward without acceleration and revs around the 700rpm mark.
    4. Any of the shift gears selected
It only appears when I'm in Drive and have my foot on the brake. As the revs drop from around 900 to 700 it starts the rattle, sounds like it's underneath near the drivers side door but stops as soon as the revs increase. However as noted above, when I let the car idle along in Drive without the accelerator at the 700rpm mark the noise does not happen. It's got me stumped and I'd like to know if anyone else has experienced this before getting it checked out by Toyota as it's due for it's 90,000km service shortly.
This is not the thumping rear axle or the normal whirring noise of a diesel as turbo kicks in and out.

CQ - I've checked the exhaust, side steps, bash plates, tow bar, panels in wheel wells to no avail. Had a chuckle when you mentioned Maccas cos I first heard mine going through the HJ's drive through. But now I notice it anytime I'm stopped. Will mention it when I get the service done and see whether there have been mentions of this before.

yip mine does the same...the fact that its only when you are in D and have the brake on suggests its when the engine is under load at these revs...if i put my aircon on its gets worse...doesnt bother me too much tho but ill be interested to see what they say. its probably just a resonance somewhere

If it's anything like mine, it'll be the flanged joint in the exhaust under the drivers side.

I agree, I've had a similar noise and fixed it by wd40-ing this joint

Mine had a rattle at low revs to ,it turned out to be the right hand fender liner. Ended up putting a piece of rubber between liner and mounting.

Ok, problem solved. The heat shield near the catalytic converter was vibrating on some nearby pipes. A quick bend stopped the noise.

                      Rattle solved

After trying to get the noise to replicate when I took it into Toyota (which of course it didn't do until almost a year later), it turned out to be a faulty flange in the exhaust. The noise wouldn't appear until the exhaust got hot which explained why it was not appearing when I would normally take it in as I only live a few minutes away. I had to take someone to the airport before going for a service last year and I was finally able to convince the service department it was not all in my "female" head!

I had the same recently on my MY14... 92,000km ish.
It was the exhaust flange / gasket right under the drivers seat. You can confirm it by when it squeaks, hold either side of the exhaust firm and the squeaking stopped.
There are similar threads elsewhere for this exhaust squeak/rattle.

I had it fixed with new gasket under warranty... pretty cheap part/job from memory regardless.
