Not unusual, my previous ISUZU (Holden) Monterey had to have the spline greased every 10-15K, but had a grease nipple to facilitate this, does the D4D had a grease nipple for this ??
That's why I have a grease gun....Rgds, Rob
I don't know but I will ask the service guys this week when they do mine.
well had a thought (damn it hurt) i pushed the "start in 2nd button" and now dont have the "thump" so it must be the gear box selecting 1st, dont think can leave it in the 2nd gear take off long term but where to now, is it a gear box (auto) problem????
I think mine is different. I only notice a slight clunk sometimes after coming to a stop. Not when taking off. Pretty sure it's just the transmission dropping back to first gear after stopping.
Cheers, Sam.
No,that is exactly the same as the 120 series, just after you pull up, it is the tailshaft, they re-greased it first on mine and then it re-appeared, then they replaced the tailshaft, no issues since.

I think (I will confirm later this week after I have my D4D fixed) that it is the 120 series binding issue....have a read of the 120 series "Thump noise when stopping (Tailshaft clunk)" thread (all the pages) and I think you will be convinced.
Here's a repeat of a post I just made over in the 120 series forum for those who are not reading both threads.......
If you work the shaft harder in and out i.e. more aggressive suspension travel typically experienced with people who use there vehicle off road more, does that mean less binding? I say this as I have yet to take my 150 off road and it only really started doing it a lot when I had a full load of people on board, next time I used the car I was the only one in it and guess what, no clunk.
Mine definitely has this issue and I'm convinced it's the 120 tail shaft issue after reading that thread. Will be getting Toyota to re-grease mine. Due for the 10k service in 1800km. Will it hurt to leave it until then?
Cheers, Sam.

Sam, from what I understand, no it won't. Good luck, I had them remove the shaft the second regrease (first did not work) and after 2000k's it's back, not as bad, but back all the same.
Well, I had the car in for the tailshaft clunk and the have added extra grease. The work report states "increased grease volume from 44 grams to 54 grams". If it should be 54 grams then it was more than 20% less than it should have been which isn't great  .
Clunk seems to have gone now but will see as I put some more km on it.
Cheers, Sam.

Back to the dealer I go today for another "drop the shaft re-grease", I was told that it will eventually stop doing it as the splines wear in........how many re-greases will it take before it stops doing this?
I think that the recommendation from your dealer is a good recommendation. I know that Toyota Japan's instructions to the dealers are to stop replacing driveshafts.
For customers who are complaining bitterly about the issue, the dealers are now instructed to remove the driveshaft, and regrind the splines, repack with grease and refit.
So since they will be effectively introducing a level of wear onto the splines to allow the grease to do its work properly, it's pretty much the same as having a slightly worn driveshaft fitted onto basically a new vehicle.
I have 14000 kms on my LC200 Cruiser, and the driveline clunk is getting less and less noticeable, so I think that letting the driveshaft wear in by itself is good enough for me.
The drive home after drop and re-grease number two was uneventful so all good once again. I slipped under and had a look at what was going on and provided the splines don't get damaged at the bind location, I think you are right, and it will wear in given what I can see of the design. Lucky I looked underneath BTW has a little grease had sprayed out on to the body including some on the exhaust pipe, a quick clean up underneath and all good (I hope).
Whenever I see those big speed humps, I intentionally (and as safely as possible) drive over them with a bit of speed to get the rear suspension compressing and rebounding to allow the grease in the shaft to redistribute.
Yes, the grease flying out of the shaft and sticking to the underside of the vehicle is a bit of a nuisance but if this is the symptom of a brand new, tight tailshaft, I'm happy to let the problem go away by itself rather than have the dealer do anything about it.
It seems that the characteristic of the tailshaft binding has been around since the 120 Series Prado, and is currently on the 150 Series, the 200 Series Cruiser and the Lexus LX570. Someone on the Land Cruiser forum says that it was also around during the time of the 80 Series. So it must simply be a Toyota thing.
For the last three days grease has been oozing from the seal around the slip joint and splattering everywhere (including over the exhaust pipe). So I thought I would check the pressure by depressing the ball in the grease nipple and sure enough a fair bit of grease came out, so I depressed it till the grease stopped coming out. This does not seem normal and I suspect the dealer over did the amount of grease in the slip joint and as a result it has been forcing past the seal. I hope this has not damaged the seal (or anything else). There was no grease splatter the first and second time it was re-greased either.
Thank you people you have answered my problem . I have noticed the exact same problem I thought it was my imagination .It only seems to occur when coming to a stop on a bit of an incline .First I thought it was my brakes but that proved to be false then the suspension also false then the transmission false .What I don't understand if Toyota have known of this and the same for the 150 mudflaps why haven't they fixed it .I fixed the flap issue by putting extensions front and rear and also before the runners no more dirty jeans Cheers Foxy
