  • Alternator problems

I have a late 2009 Prado 150 and the battery light was on. i charged the battery started the prado and found that the battery light was still on, and the battery showed no charge, 12.4v (same voltage as before starting)
i replaced the alternator with an alternator from REPCO (OEX DXA552U).
i started the Prado, but the battery light was still on, an slightly flickering. however the voltage was up around 14V.
when the i rev the engine, the battery light goes solid, but goes back to almost flickering off when the engine goes back to idle.

Has anyone else had a similar problem?
btw as far as i can see, there is no alternator booster diode fitted.

I emailed OEX who have said to use a scan tool to clear the fault code.
had no idea there was a battery fault code that would leave the battery light on. Is this correct?

anyone know of a way to clear codes without a scan tool?

An OBD dongle ($10 from ebay) and TorquePro on your phone is able to clear codes.

Have you checked the ALT-S and ECU-IG&GAUGE fuses, as your getting charge at the battery I assuming
the alternator fuse is ok but might be still worth checking also?

      Checked the connectors and wiring?

Checked clutch is ok if you swapped it over?

If all the above is ok most likely the alternator is faulty, I would only use the genuine item myself as I get a lot of
feedback from those that have used none OEM and many fail after 50000Km or so. You can buy remanufactured
      OEM units from Toyota.

The alternator on the 2009 is stand alone, it is not controlled by the engine ECU and thus there aren't any fault
code for the charging circuit, OEX obviously have no "real" knowledge.

I would suggest you'll have to take it to an auto electrician and get him to confirm the alternator is faulty and
      the return it.

        Thanks for the info.
i have already confirmed that there are no codes and took it to an auto elec to confirm it is faulty.
going to return the faulty alternator and get another one

When mine failed I found a bloke on ebay who was selling genuine 150 series alternators for $400, about half the price of what Toyota charge. There didn't seem to be a lot of good feedback about non-genuine ones. https://www.ebay.com.au/usr/starterm...72.m2749.l2754

            Update:
i went back to Repco and exchanged it for another brand new unit, with the same part number.
            Got home and fitted it.
All operates normal now! No battery light on and charging at about 14v.

frustrated that the first one had a fault, but happy that the new one has no fault.

btw Repco list price for this 130a alternator was approx. $475. With the wife’s NRMA card, I got 20% off so it was $375.
