  • Dual battery, interior panel removal tips

    Hi guys,

Purchased a new GXL 8 weeks ago and am about to install my dual battery setup. After lots of thinking I have decided to run the cabling (6b&s) through the passenger side trim to a fuse block in the rear panel and then a 12v power board and Anderson plug for the fridge, was wanting to know of anything I need to watch out for with removing the trim and if the rear panel will come out with the third row seats still installed.

It has been a while since I have tackled a job like this so trying to make sure I have what I need and am prepared.

Thanks in advance for any tips/advice.

PS on a side note does anyone know if we need to connect the IGN wire on a projecta idc25 or not on the current Prado. Have parts to do it but if not needed I am happy to not connect it.

    Cheers

    Tony

I have a 5 seat GX so different in the back but I managed to get the cable to the back left hand corner UNDER the carpet without pulling side panels etc out. May be worth looking at to save hassles.

Done exactly the same thing to my 2018 GXL but down the drivers side.
There is barely enough room for the cable plus split mesh conduit under the door step trim. 6 gauge cable may be too thick but you can easilty check by taking the trim off.

I also ran the cable into the rear compartment sidewall trim. Had to drill a hole in the plastic to run the cable out.
I mounted a REPCO inverter, 240V powerboard with 4 sockets and 2 x USB charging ports (Bunnings) plus a 50A Anderson and 4 x 30A Anderson connectors on a cable tray and mounted it on my cargo barrier using thick rubber spacers and wing nuts.

Cheers guys for the tips/advice. Making me think under the car might be easier but I would rather it through the interior as it is better protected.

Looks like Ike I just need to allocate a little more time to remove the rear seats.

I am sure it will be remembered as a fun little project once it has been completed.

I ran 6b&s to the rear for my dual battery

I used the big grommet on the passenger side had to cut a hole as twin core 6b&s was huge !

hardest part and most frustrating part was trying to push the grommet back in as when I tried to push the 6b&s through it popped out being so big and pushing hard ! But once I got far enough it comes out under the glove box..

then i opened the passenger kick panel and put it in there.. next lift off the door sill/ scruff panel things.. very tight but it fits and then go to the back and take that sill panel and run through.. it was tight getting it through from front sill to back sill.. has cables and fuel Release cable there too..

once through there was easiest way to get to back was take the rubber seal off that goes to the back panel to the rear cargo area and push in to there...

go to the cargo area and the cup holder pops out take it out and you値l be able to grab the cables there an then you can do what you want

I have a build thread you Can see the Anderson plug in the back etc

i want to do a fuse block too.. how do i earth things ? I noticed they only have a positive on them ???

Also in engine bay removed the black code that covers the radiator etc you can cable tie it and run it nicely in there the cables from the aux battery then to the passenger side

so this way you don稚 need to remove seats or anything

use a screw driver to pry up the cup holder in the cargo area just carful doesn稚 damage it..

also can access the cable you ran through the hatch the jack is in..

The alternator is a temp not smart so apparently don稚 need ign wire??

i could be wrong I havnt got a dc dc yet I just take the aux out and charge it and put back in for trips currently

                Cheers Gurilla,

I will most likely try your tips for the rear section as not pulling the inner panel off does appeal to me. I will most likely remove the back seats now as after talking to the wife I am going to do a false floor and mount the fridge slide in at the same time. Was going to wait till we did draws next year but just bought a Waeco CFX75DZW and the thing is bloody big and heavy so it can live in the back permanently unless I need the space for something else.

The fuse block I bought off eBay is a 6 way and has one main earth for power feed and another 6 for each of the fuses. Though I know what you mean as a few of the ones I looked at I couldn稚 see how they were earthed.

                Cheers

                Tony

                  Ok cheers

all I want to do it have extra points for maybe lights and maybe if we need to charge anything ? So only need a small fuse block

how are you mounting your battery and dcdc?

i have a plastic n70 battery tray same as the main battery tray and some cheap battery clamps that seem alright ? Have been in the sand dunes and had no issues with the car bouncing around so far ?

I am using the piranha battery tray and using a 105ah AGM under bonnet. Mounting the projecta idc25 to a mount in front of radiator, so hopefully that will keep temps in check for optimal charging.

The fuse use box is mainly for future mods like lights etc. it痴 main use for time being will be a couple of extra usb points and ciggie charger for charging phones etc whilst sleeping at night whilst camping.

What year is your car ?

as I知 not sure your aware of the earlier model prados had inner gaurd cracks from large batteries..

especially large 105ah and being a Agm there really heavy !

i have a 102ah century n70 acid deep cycle I知 a little bit worried about this but I have a 2018 but meant to be fine ??

Mine is a 2019 GXL so as far as I am aware it should be fine with this particular battery.

running under carpet in boot area with out removing the side panel is fine just dont put anything heavy on it as it can potentially catch fire if your drawing abit of current past there

There is an existing hole, which has a blank grommet in it, to the right of that big grommet on the drivers side .
Replace it with a grommet of the correct size and you can push the cable through.
You will also need to get thru the sound padding on the bulkhead inside the cabin.

Tony76 are you able to post up photos of how you mounted your fuses/circuit breakers for your Projecta dcdc ? I知 just looking at how to do it now.. and where to mount the circuit breakers as I値l need 2 for the dcdc and I値l have to move the one to the rear to neaten it up a bit
